Basically its a guy who got played by a girl way out of his league. The title is ironic because even though shes so 'last summer' he's still pining about it. She has a fling with him but lets him know straight out it was a moment of weakness for her and that for all his over-confidence and ego theres not that many redeeming qualities about him that make him different than any of the other guys dying to sleep with her. Bruises him as his ego is from the girls he's been with thinking he was something special. Hes obviously hurt by this and has fantasies (wishful thinking) about her missing him so much that she crawls back to him... only so he can reject HER this time for vindication |

Anyhow the middle of the song is a key part - 'And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you Used to live' - when things get bad she goes back to that place of fantasy when she was young and compares it to her current situation.. leads to the temptations part and my post above. | |

| Just to add to my meaning - you can sense the hard edged tone. About girls that have this waiting to be saved complex who don't want to grow up and get realistic. Get into relationships... overly involved with a naive lack of sensibility. Basically she needs to grow up and save herself not prop herself up temporarily with some nice guy. Always ends up in a self destructing mess probably hurting the guy pretty bad. (ie. He doesn't look a thing like Jesus But more than you'll ever know). He probably was a really good guy but she clings to this unattainable idea that is destined to destroy any relationship she enters and will never really know what she has lost. | |

In my opinion: Girl wallowing in her pity from her stupid mistakes shes made throughout the years. Shes all wrapped up in all her idealism to go back to something pure like she thought of relationships when she was a young child. This leads her into a relationship.. he isn't/doesn't look like a saint but fits her general profile as something good to make up for her bad decisions. They get really involved (climb this mountain, higher than ever before) - the higher you are the harder you fall. It spirals out of control even though it wasn't the intention (burning, hurricane imagery). The devils water part represents temptation, lust, infidelity, what not. Shows the flaw of her logic... dipping your feet in once in awhile can't hurt right?? wrong. Then it repeats the first part of the song more or less. Shows the cyclical nature of her relationships? She starts out with the purest, highest intentions that only a young girl could think were possible and it leads her into more heartache and disaster every time. |

Just want to add my 2 cents: newspaper gown, tired underpants -> I don't think it means she is a slut at all, quite the opposite. If she was a slut the other guy she was with wouldn't have to talk her out of her skirt. All of this just eludes to her homely appearance, innocence and insecurity. Her underpants are tired as she doesn't expect to get laid at a party so doesn't wear anything special. Her insecurity is referenced again with 'when she laid on her back the sun hit her body like an ugly landscape' - she hates her body but felt free and comfortable enough to share it with the narrator completely. She is totally honest with him while he is afraid to get too involved with her when she isn't exactly what he wants. But some things never get better like used cars and bad livers - he comes to realize that he can't get beyond her boring looks so he trades her in for someone that has the looks however in retrospect he realizes she lacks the innocent honesty and truthfulness of Jane. The next part I have my own thoughts on. The love he had for Jane was really pity for her lack of self esteem and confidence in herself. He is now disfigured and hates himself. After this accident the only love HE is getting is pity for his plight. There is a tragic irony to this. He feels a regretful sympathy for her and how the pity he called love had damaged her and sent her on a rebound with some loser. Loving someone out of pity is a horrible thing to do and now he is feeling regret for his actions. He might long to go back in time to be with her but thats just out of the desperation of the situation he finds himself in. It really shows what a dick he is because the only time he thought of her again is now when he's hit rock bottom. |

Not unlike 'right where it belongs' this song really speaks volumes about trents own self examination of a reality that evidently holds a lot of unanswered questions for him. Truely is a bit scary and anyone who has had these train of thoughts before will know exactly what I mean, |

| Personally I think it hard to take this song other than in an existential context. Perhaps Trent describing a battle with his own sanity and accepting / rejecting the reality of his own existence. A lot of songs on this CD seem to carry these themes of existence, narcissism, sanity and challenging preconcieved notions of these things. | |
