the thing about chino being depressed and not knowing if he wanted to do another deftones album makes perfect sense once you go through the lyrics. this is what i get out of it "Universe (surrounds you)" -there is alot of pressure put on him to do another album "When you're ready it waits (for us to) leave this earth." -fans will always be waiting for a new album or for them to go on tour "Come on, they're calling your name out..." -other band members calling him trying to get him to do the album or fans at a venue chanting "deftones" waiting for them to plug in and play "I don't know, I could stay or leave" -he's depressed and doesnt care if he does or doesnt, it doesnt matter to him "Either way, 'cause the comet can take us, all the way through..." -don't know "Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving, Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving, goodbye" -chino enjoys writing and doing records and its sort of a safe haven for him and could get him out of this depression. he could wave goodbye to his bandmates or wave goodbye to fans after a gig, either way. "Return to see, everything looks the same" -comes back from tour to see nothings changed "I don't know if the change it made was grave, cause the craving remains the same" -put all his heart into the record and tour and what not and returns home and is depressed again and doesn't know why when he knows he should feel great just a case of the blues xerces blue butterfly was located out in the sand dunes in the sunset district of san fransisco and was the first american butterfly to become extinct due to urban development. maybe he thinks hes gonna die if he just stays where he is instead of getting up and out and doing things and being productive |

| to me this song is about a best friend who has made a decision that benefits themselves but truely hurts you. and whatever decision they have made causes you great pain and knowing this they continue to do what theyve done despite how much you have been through together. you dont even recognize this person anymore because they dont show any of the qualities that you once admired them for. | |

| to me "the battle" is between the lyricists heart and his head. continue loving whoever after whatever they have done or whatever pain they have put you through(heart) or decide the pain isnt worth it and crush whatever love you still have for them as hard as that may be and get on with your life(head). it seems that the writer listened to his head, maybe after going with his heart a number of times just to find himself in the same spot again and again. | |

| oh man, whenever i hear this song it just motivates me to prove wrong anyone who has ever doubted me and just spit in their face. the song to me is just saying use somebodys doubt to your advantage when just dreaming of the look on their face after you've proven them wrong is all the motivation you need. | |
