Cake – Commissioning A Symphony In C Lyrics 21 years ago
Nice work, mdg. I think there is a parallel between your research and today's music world where the nobleman (record company) commissions (advances) the composer (musician) to create a symphony (album). The nobleman enters with great caution (the exec sneaks into the performance) but no one pays attention. The nobleman (exec) doesn't appreciate the music -- he just wants to point out its faults. Seldom breathing life (smelling the roses -- appreciating the music) but mostly death (pessimism). I know that John is not a big fan of the record companies. That's my take, anyway.

Cake – I Bombed Korea Lyrics 21 years ago
Other people look at me funny when I say this is one of my favorite CAKE songs. It is quite simple, but catchy and quirky. I think it's not quite an anti-war song, but it's obvious that the man the song is about has some serious regrets about what he did in the war.

Cake – Guitar Lyrics 21 years ago
At a recent concert, John mentioned that he wrote this song while in New York and I *think* he said he was waiting for some record execs to have the time to talk to him. I think his guitar symbolizes his music and he wonders if he quit the biz, would he regret it or be happier because of it. One of my favorite CAKE songs -- fantastic guitar work in the beginning.

Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics 21 years ago
New to the site, glad I could bring a new angle to the "serrated edge" question. First, I think that this song stemmed from John's less than enjoyable experience in LA early in his career. I'm sure he got more than his fill of this type of couple while he was there. Secondly, I think the "simple machine" with the "serrated edge" refers to her vibrator. "that she moves back and forth / it's such a simple machine / she doesn't have to use force / when she gets what she wants she puts the rest on a tray / in a zip-loc bag". Many people take the adjective serrated to automatically mean something sharp, but it can also mean something with tooth-like projections and (I'm guessing) many vibrators have ridges. Her husband is getting his sex, but she has to find sexual satisfaction in other ways. Why is she putting it on a tray in the freezer? To hide it from her husband, of course! It's the perfect hiding spot -- she knows her spoiled husband would never open the freezer other than to pull out a quart of ice cream, right?
