| Iron & Wine – Fever Dream Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Is it just me, or is "I want your flowers like babies want God's love" a sexual reference. Being "deflowered" is losing one's virginity, so that's how I take that line. | |

I heard this song for the first time. I'd never so much as even heard of this guy, but I am captivated. I'm captivated by the clarity of his voice and honesty of his words. "Your fingers, built for the piano, work out the knots that line my back. The stress I've stored since last December; But now, it doesn't matter. I've learned to leave it in my past." Beautiful. |

| Bright Eyes – The Awful Sweetness of Escaping Sweat Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Teenage years. Young, promiscuous, maybe even in love. Either way, I believe they were looking for adventure. Here's what I take from it. "we escape from the house as the day disappears from the sky into night we became what we wanted to be like a dream or a ghost.." They know exactly where they're going, what they're doing. The music hints at anxiousness or excitement. "i collapse out of turn near a house lying still in the grass and felt the heat from the ground rising up to contract and expand like a breathe we escape from that place soaked with sweat and the poison we drank" Maybe sex and some alcohol? Running, laughing, breathing heavily, falling to the ground in pure ecstasy from that natural high you get from the sheer excitement of it all. "fill the bathtub with ice and hope this fever will break like a heart easily" I agree with the notion in the previous comment about the 'fever' being a mental thing. After all of the excitement wears off, there is perhaps some regret. "but i do not recall all the words that were formed on those wire lips as they greeted me a promise was made without though as the temperature climbed" An in the moment kind of thing, especially the last line. I believe this goes back to being young, naive, and mistaking something for love. "Together forever", you know? You get so caught up and you don't remember all of the specifics.. but you know it's nothing you're going to be able to stick with. "and i started to sink like the moon tends to do if you stare at it too long then you blink and its gone and we crawl to our sleep with the dawn" The sinking feeling is that realization settling in that those lovely words that were spoken won't be able to be true.0 "i awake in the light feeling hollow and selfishly warm close the blinds and retreat until what is burning is gone and it's light is away" The first line is what really makes me think it's about sex. He feels hollow because it won't ever amount to anything, but he can't help but feel something considering what happened. Regardless, he still feels bad, he wants the comfort of night [sunset/'what's burning is gone]. "then we are back in the dark chasing nothing through backyards and trees you ripped your shirt on a fence but it didn't get me yeah it's fear it makes you slow" They are back together in the night. More foolishness, but it's youth; they want to be together. Perhaps even a dream sequence as suggested in some of the following lines. "and these creatures look crooked their shadows cut lines through my face and the concrete is fire where my bare feet are placed in a line next to yours and i guess i'm not sure if it was fear that was born as those awful eyes made their claim on us i put my hands on the fence said your name and i started to climb" This whole sequence sounds so panicky to me. It could be a dream, it could be true. Either way, it's my opinion that it's sympbolic. He's still feeling panicked about what's happened. It all sounds like guilt, like anxiety and/or fear about what's to come. "I put my hands on the fence, said your name, and I started to climb." He wants to do what he can to make it work, but it started off wrong and he feels there's nothing he can do about it. "and it must have been sweat but i drank it like wine it was sweet and my mouth was dry" Obviously something bad taken as something good. It could be an allusion to the sexual encounter. It could be reference to him trying to make this madness work out. "i heard you scream but i made no reply" He knew it wouldn't work out, and he's giving up. "i can still taste it now if i try" Recollection, reflection, the yearning for the adventure and that first encounter that still had a hint of innocence. Nostalgia. |

| Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For the New World Order) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
"Grey like new day leaks through the window and some old song comes on the alarm clock radio. You walk the forty blocks to the middle of the place. We heard where everything would be and there was barracades to keep us off the street, but the crowd kept pushing forward until they swallowed the police. Yeah, they went wild. We left before the dust had time to settle and all the broken glass swept off the avenue. On the way home I held your camera like a bible, wishing so bad that it held some kind of truth. And I stood nervous next to you in the dark room, you dropped the paper in the water and it all begins to bloom. Yeah, they go wild. Just when I get so lonesome I can't speak, I see some flowers on a hill side, like a wall of new TVs. Yeah, they go wild. " I'm not really sure how to explicate this song, but I'll damn well take a guess. The first verse- He talks about the new day (a recurrent theme throughout the album), then overpowering the 'controlling force', the police (I think this has to do with the other theme on the album, that war is stupid and childish. Maybe. ). They just got tired of being repressed. Second verse- They leave the place when it's all still a mess. I think the think about the camera and the bible is somewhat of a mockery of religion. He knows that the camera will hold something that really happened, where as the bible is all BS. So his longing for truth is fulfilled in the darkroom where "it all begins to bloom"- the photos coming up on the paper. I really think that verse is all about losing religion, and him knowing that truths are found in concrete evidence and not in faith. Third verse- Not much there, but it's lovely. He says he's "so lonely [he] can't speak", but then he sees flowers on a hillside, symbolizing hope. As for the choruses of "they go wild", I think it's just all about being released (from the government, religion, and depression [stated in the verses, respectively]) and finally being free. I think it's absolutely wonderful. |

| Bright Eyes – A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| To make it short, the song is about a seduction that you don't really want, but can't turn down. Not neccessarily a seduction in the sexual sense either. He is being captivated by some unknown that he knows will not be good for him in the end, but it's an impulse and he cannot turn away. The way he puts everything in it is just chilling, it is so incredible. | |

| Sorry, by the way this is one of my favorite bright eyes songs. It is extremely well written, and the last half of the first verse nearly kills me. | |

Um.. "the film on the wall" is referencing the in-flight movie ("because I am leaving, oh on the next airplane") .."the film on the wall makes the people look small who are sitting beside it, all consumed in the drama" |
