To the first two posts: You two both spoke of this song providing direction. Did you say that without thinking, or did you really glean direction from these lyrics? Romans 14:23 says, "Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin." This is a radical indictment of all natural "virtue" that does not flow from a heart humbly relying on God's grace. Romans 8:7-8 says, "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, indeed it cannot; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God." Ephesians 2:1 says that we Christians were all once "dead in trespasses and sins." The point of deadness is that we were incapable of any life with God. Our hearts were like a stone toward God (Ephesians 4:18; Ezekiel 36:26). Our hearts were blind and incapable of seeing the glory of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4-6). We were totally unable to reform ourselves. In summary, total depravity means that our rebellion against God is total, everything we do in this rebellion is sin, our inability to submit to God or reform ourselves is total, and we are therefore totally deserving of eternal punishment. It is hard to exaggerate the importance of admitting our condition to be this bad. If we think of ourselves as basically good or even less than totally at odds with God, our grasp of the work of God in redemption will be defective. Billy needs Christ to do a work of grace in his heart, just as anyone does who feels "trapped", or overwhelmed. I've experienced the feelings that are portrayed in this song. I think we feel this way because we are confused about our purpose in life, so life becomes merely a weight that pulls us down. The foundation of these feelings is that we think we deserve more, and we are frustrated because we are not in control. Every person is born with the desire to be in complete control. We want to be God. A lot of churches try to push Christianity as something that will make YOU feel better, build YOUR self-worth and confidence, or help YOU find your purpose. Do we think that Jesus died because WE are worth something, or do you think it was a display of His worth? Freedom comes when we are cut loose from worrying about our agenda and value, and given new eyes. We need not only talk about the love of God but also his wrath. All I ever hear is, “Jesus loves you, he died for you, he cares about you”. These are all true, but he is also going to pour His wrath out upon the unrighteous. We should hear this more “repent, or be dammed”…..Joh 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him…… Christ doesn’t give us self-worth, he shows us the infinite worth of Christ, and joins us together with Him, so His worth becomes our confidence. When this happened to me I didn’t feel trapped anymore, because “I” was not in focus anymore. Here is the why every person on the face of the earth is alive, whether they like it or not: Col 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. |

| I think Pillar is a very talented, very edgy band. The message in this song is sort of hidden, but when discovered is ok. I do have one problem with them though. If you werm to to visit their website, you would be hardpressed to find so much a hint that would link them to Christ. I was kind of disappointed. The question is, are the ashamed? | |
