I thought that the lyric was "when Charleston is for pleasure and pleasure is way out of hand..." I know that Jay Farrar has used atleast one other Civil War reference in Son Volt's "Strand" with the line - "Like grapeshot - fine spray"...grapeshot was the ammunition used by soldiers. |

| Would love to know what this song means...or even what the references are from. | |

I read an article where Jeff commented on how he found it ironic and funny that a song entitle "less than you think" is 12 minutes long. Honestly, I think that it was supposed to make everyone conjure up lengthy lyrical interpretations when the song is really about the way instructmental music makes you feel. Tweedy later said that he wanted his music to inspire his listeners to stay true to their own opinions and to incite action...and that this song should incite listeners to get up and turn it off if they got sick of listening to feedback. |

| I agree with "thisheargiraffe". I think that it's about his mother. Her death had a great impact on his family and definitely on him. She seems to be the source and inspiration for a lot of his emotions and songs. | |

During a concert, Jeff Tweedy once dedicated this song to his sister. I think that alot of times people automatically assume that the "woman" must be his lover, when infact his sister and his deceased mother have had a great impact on him. I think that he's been married to the same woman for several years. Also, he was definitely abusing prescription drugs. Chronic migraines and other chronic pain. So he could have been buying them as well as some illegal substances. |
