I'd always heard it "There goes THE Robert E Lee," referring to the famous steamboat (actually, I believe there was more than one), but it makes far more sense as a reference to a sighting of the man himself. Not only was the steamboat from a much later period, but it is much more likely and more contextually appropriate that the sighting of the man himself, returning home after the fall of Dixie, would stand out and have much more resonance for the man himself and for the song. The steamboat thing always struck me as a cliche--a trite emblem of The Old South and what'd they throw that in for?--so I'm glad to have it corrected. |

The reference to the Solomon is pretty obvious--"breasts like a cluster of grapes" is a quotation from the Song of Solomon, one of the greatest pieces of erotic poetry in the Hebrew Testament.
One of the things I love about Francis is the way he shift so easily and seamlessly between lo-fi punk and hi-culture references like this. Lot's of examples. Nimrod's Son; also my fave, "Uriah hit the crapper, the crapper" from "Dead," which is based on David and Bathsheba; not to mention Gouge Away, and a few others. Boy's a friggin genius. |
