ubersheep -- while i agree that this song is far from the bands best work (the entire album, actually -- check out the maddox review of it some time), I really like their older stuff. To be honest, I can't quite describe what it is that i like so much... maybe i've been taken in by pop culture, who knows. either way, their music is catchy, and they are one of the few rock bands capable of writing lyrics without failing horribly. deny it all you want; bono is actually one of the better writers out there, lyrically speaking. listen to "with or without you" sometime... it's not exactly cutting edge, but it's got a certain element to it that many find moving. enough of my babbling... it's after midnight, and i can hardly think. |

i'm pretty sure this song was written about bono's wife, as is a good portion of his music. either way, this song is fucking amazing. very sensual, very sexy... i love it. |

| U2 – I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For Lyrics

The song refers to the search for religious contentment. The lyrics "Only to be with you" refer to his quest to be with god/jesus. All the things he's overcome (climbing walls, etc.) refer to his quest for knowledge on the subject. the lines "You broke the bonds and you loosed the chains
Carried the cross of my shame, of my shame
You know I believed it " are a fairly obvious reference to jesus dying on the cross. finally, the lines "i still haven't found what i'm looking for" show his ever-present thirst for religious-fulfillment. for the record, i'm not even remotely religious. however, the "carried the cross of my shame" lines are a pretty clear indicator of what this song is about. |

ok. the verse parts (hello, is there anybody in there? etc. are all things someone might say to someone having a psychotic episode) are a medic speaking to "pink" (character in the album) before a performance. the chorus is pink's inner monologue, referring to his withdrawel into himself (there is no pain, you are receeding; aka, the people are him are fading off, as he withdraws.) the wall is a concept album, and the songs make a hell of a lot more sense once you figure that out. |

smoke -- interesting take on the song. however, i just don't think reznor has the ability to create something that complex... not trying to be an asshole -- i love nine inch nails -- but i really can't see him actually thinking that sort of thing up, and successfuly executing it without being glaringly obvious. |

political climates? good sex? lord, you people have no clue what you're talking about. taking the rest of the album into context, this song is pretty much about a man who's learned to view sex as a purely physical act. it's something intense, to distract him from the fucked-upedness of his life. there are no emotions attached -- like pain to a cutter, the feelings involved in sex keep him feeling alive. |

Numpty and McJesus are right. Most of you are looking at this as a stand-alone piece. It makes a hell of a lot more sense if you listen to the rest of the album. |
