firstly i have notice many people keep agreeing on that this song is about an orgy. i thnk the orgy idea is relevent to some exten, only in a metaphorical sense. I listened to this song on repeat while at work just so i could work it out , my conclusion was similar to that of "russian assasin"s i believe it is about the hiroshima nuclear attack and the pogo stick being the nuke... I went out on a date, With a girl, a bit late, She had so many friends- this is america joining world war 2 late on (the girl being great britain nad her friends her allies) i brought my pogo stick just to show her a trick - the pogo stick is hte nuke which was a new technology of the time unannounced twister games, all players with no names - implys the attack was unexpected and wasnt aimd at attacking any1 important, just to asue maximum damage They lined up double quick, But just one pogo stick - when the first nuke was made many people were excited to witness the future of war and mass destruction technology, yet despite only being 1 bomb everyone was so keen to see it. Everyone gets to play, Runaway, expose', It was so exotic, But just one pogo stick. - when they saw the amount of desruction and damge it did they were shockd and terrified " everyone gets to play runaway" refers to the amount of people it killd over a large area and "exotic" could refer to either the region or the destrution seen only seen before by by tornados and earthquakes ( exotic weather conditions) the repeatition of " just one pogo stick" keeps enforcing hte idea of how the creators of the bomb couldn believe its power. Oh, I like to spread you out, Touching whoever's behind - again this represents the idea of mass desruction and damage from all directions. the idea of the orgy fits in as the nuclear bomb was seen as an exciting new idea ( like an orgy) this is just my opinion though. however on the surface the song would appear to be about an orgy |

actually if you read further into the lyrics you will find out it is far more powerful than just a one night stand. i personally believe this song is about two lovers which have been separated due to the main character being imprisoned for something and alexandra his lover who comes to visit him on his last night."They slip between the sentries of the heart" suggests that they are being guarded yet alexandra manages to get in.. they spend the night with each other... and the next morning the main character is trying to contemplate whether tha evening actually did take place. | Leonard Cohen – Joan of Arc Lyrics | 21 years ago |

The song is about the Joan of Arc witchcraft trial and portrays they execution of Joan as a very poetic, unition between her and the fire, the "wedding dress or something white" quote is very important here as it symbolises the clothing of an angel indicating she wishes to be rid of this world, The wedding also represents the unition between joan and the fire, or unition of the elements "she must be wood".Also the idea of it being called a wedding is intersting as the it was the complete antithesis and was in fact an execution, one way which i believe in which they are connected is that both lead you on to a new life and new beggining The idea of the fire representing the devil i believe is just as valid as the idea of it being god. Joan of Arc was put on trial for witchcraft and burnt at stake, witchs in medievil times were seen as followers of the devil and so therefore burning her was the final stage of her invokation. The idea that it is god speaking to her is also important as Joan believed that god was the one who had told her to lead the french army to victory so the fact that god is speaking to her once again could have been a possibility. -These are just my thoughts on the song, if i work out any further in depths ideas i shall add them.
