when i heard chariot, i thought of the gospel song "swing low, sweet chariot". the chariot in that song is the vehicle to heaven. so while he may not be literally singing about jesus or the christianized ideal of heaven, i think the song is about the inner journey for meaning and self-actualization. |

I always heard the line as "we lie together and we say it's love", which I think has a double meaning. They're both keeping up a lie that they're in love for the other's sake. Or they're having sex and mistaking it for love. |

I think he's talking about someone who will hurt you and tell you they love you at the same time. They claim they're rejecting you, trying to change you, criticizing you because they're looking out for your best interest. Or breaking up with you while claiming to love you. This song has a taste of rebellion but also resignation, as if to say I'll just keep my mouth shut and conform to your ideal and then you'll have no excuses because I gave you what you asked. But he knows that the person can't look in his eyes because they're lying about what is making them so unhappy and about what they really want. He wants to believe the lies and ignore the fact that the person is going to make him change himself, call him to a new place, and leave him standing there alone. |

this song makes me want to cease to exist, like i should stop holding onto my physical self and melt into the universe. it's painful, it's hopeful, it's epic, it's too beautiful to understand... or maybe it's understandable in an innate way but i cannot pin it down in words. i love the common sounds they scattered through it and the raw sound of the guitar in contrast with the refined orchestral sound. the bumping noise like travelling down the highway. oddly, it reminds me of "2001: a space odyssey". |

I largely agree with pfarabee but I reacted differently to the line: "without a trust or flaming fields am i too dumb to refine?" I thought of the flaming field as an oil field, coupled with a monetary trust to refer to financial wealth. Refine is a double entendre--you can refine oil, you can refine a person. So if you take that meaning, the line before it: "I'm looking in on the good life i might be doomed never to find." could mean that he's wondering if he'll ever taste wealth, luxury, refinement... |

i don't think it has to be about a break up. he could just be saying that the past only exists in our memories. throw out all those bad things you hold on to in your head and they never existed at all. |

| Guster – Jesus On The Radio Lyrics

The whole "Jesus on the radio" image is a really good way to describe something without wasting too many words. I think most people have an image, feeling, or memory related to hearing country gospel-like religious music on the radio, being young and silly and optomistic because you've got your whole life ahead of you.
The second verse could very well be him talking to himself--he keeps a picture of himself that doesn't match the reality. I see it as a reflection on unmet expectations, memories of dreams now beyond your reach. But I wouldn't look too deeply because I think this song was written mainly as an excuse for them to experiment with some instruments and harmonization. |

I think it's really creative to take "gasping, calling" and add the r sound for "grasping, crawling". |

This song helps me get motivated. When I start to make excuses or take the easy way I think, "No more messing around, or living underground, or New Year's resolutions." Do it NOW, do it the right way. |

Maybe this interpretation is a little literal, but I think that this song is about that point in life where you finally reach adulthood. Confusion and fear make you want to run back to your comfort zone and idolized memories but eventually you have to suck it up and get out there to control your own destiny. |
