on the split drew says that this song " is about the slow process of remembering all of the details of my interactions with someone only now that the individual is very much out of reach. as memories return, i formulate all of these questions for the dearly departed" he also says what links this song with were sustained by the corpse..... is " what makes me wonder if its selfish to refuse goodbyes" to me these two songs really seem to relate to one another... being that they were released and probably written around the same time, probably from some kind of common inspiration developed from personal relationships. i love how the songs really force you to relate his emotions to aspects of our own lives. the imagery and extravagant details in recapturing his feelings are brilliant, making these songs very potent and meaningful to me. |

i talked to drew about this song when he came through charlotte. essentially it is about how as he was becoming more independent and going his own ways (art and music) his dad, who he had been very close with, became very rigid. something i think a lot of us can relate to as we experience the pains of growing up. the line "in the nervous light" is a line from one of his dad's favorite books. he put it in there to vent the feelings he had, thats also why you see the line " my dads favorite novel on top of the pile, in the self concious first light shake the memory of his smile" a great job of capturing the emotion of seperation. thats basically how he explained it to me, making this song much more meaningful and tangible in my own life. |
