"Obituary every birthday" would seem to mean he was tempted to kill himself on his birthday every year. It's not uncommon for depressed people to feel extra depressed and suicidal on days when healthy people are happy, such as anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, etc... Perhaps Kurt is trying to say in this song that he feels driven to suicide by some other personality. "Angel left wing, right wing, broken wing" may have some demonic meaning to it, i.e., perhaps Kurt thought he was possessed, or had a suicidal schizophrenic alter ego. More likely he seems to imply that Courtney is driving him to suicide. She's the "protector of the kennel", i.e. the home, they "feed off of each other" and can "share their endorphins" (have sex probably). Her "scent" is in his place of recovery, i.e., their home. Maybe he's pleasing with her, or asking for help in some crytpic way. Hard to tell. I have to respond to one comment made :"i think it says that hes not taking the ideo of killing himself seriously. " Um, do you know he wanted to name the album "I hate myself and want to die", that "In Utero" seems to refer to a wish that he had been aborted/never born, and the he *did* in fact blow his brains out? |

Good theories, but that doesn't explain the "Smiles" "bruises" and, most cryptic, "bars in the womb". It may be because spilled semen, such as masturbation, leads to no new life in the womb, hence masturbating creates bars in the womb, perhaps. Or, perhaps the reference is to the fact that if he is incarcerated, then he will never have sex with a woman again, i.e., there are bars in his prison cell that act like "bars" in the "womb" by preventing sexual access to a woman. He is resigned to this fate when he says "I am willing to make love to concrete", that is, his sexual desires will be frustrated by the concrete prison of his cell. "My time as spilt milk" may simply mean no one will miss him or care that he is jailed, i.e., no one cries over spilt milk like himself. "Smiles. Bruises" perhaps refers to a normal prison experience on the surface, but that other prisoners or guards are meting out extra justice to him behind the scenes. What "cruel words sleep above me, mounting and teasing" refers to is obscure at this juncture. |

And it's accurate. Pedophiles do believe that the children they abuse do in fact love them. There is a whole grooming process they put the targeted child through, giving them gifts, telling them they can do what they want. The music, I assume, is meant to reflect the sweet allure to a child that the pedophile initially offers. I'm not sure how *entertaining* this song is after you figure out its meaning. |

I've always thought the song was about a woman seduced and raped by her lover ("bloodstains on my tattered clothes"), perhaps by someone she knew or loved ("I remember loving you so much"). That the "memories" and "recollections" are hazy and unclear may signify she was drugged or drunk, or that she's trying to repress the memory, with only partial success. The idea of being drugged is especially strong in "did I encounter a darkness stronger than sleep"; or perhaps he beat her unconscious before or while violating her. Her talk about "is this my blood dried upon my face, or is it the love of someone else" seems to ask whether it was her blood or her lover's; if her lover's, then he raped her. The implication is that it is indeed her lover's ("It tastes so sweet *just like you used to*") She seems to hope some stranger raped her, as she hopes her love will rescue her. The difficult part is that Patton seems to imply that she secretly or guiltily liked it ("why does this pain feel so good" "how can I feel such love"); perhaps he is being darkly sarcastic. |

As Patton has said, the song is about masturbation. Those who try to claim the lyrics are without meaning forget that Patton wrote all the lyrics for the Real Thing in like two weeks. Contrary to what Patton says, most of his songs are about something, even if they are sophomorically scatalogical. The video gives the theme away: A hand with an eye in it (as in, it knows what you are doing), lightning (masturbation is electrifying), the hand 'climaxing' if you will. Degrading stuff, but that is what it is about. |
