| Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics | 19 years ago |

1imaginarygirl, one of the things that makes this song great (or any song great for that matter) is the option to interpret it differently than other people. The brashness of your last comment didn't really need to be there because this song, by no means, has to be about heroin addiction to everyone who hears it. It will never be exclusively about heroin addiction to me, no matter how much I do know about Lou Reed, how many times I listen to "I'm Waiting For The Man" or "Heroin", or how often I watch Trainspotting, and it really doesn't have to be. I tend to believe this song is about only feeling self-worth through some sort of brief escape, but ultimately feeling empty, abandoned, insignificant, and very unhappy with the person you are. Yes, this song could be about heroin (and most likely is) but it could really be about anything that provides a temporary extrication from yourself. I find that whether the song is about heroin or a relationship completely irrelevant in the meaning. |

I kind of always took 8-ball as more of an adjective, in context. If someone walks up looking pretty "8-ball" I picture a very sleazy looking man - you know, something very comical. Not neccesarily on meth, but certainly looks like he is anyway. Either way, this is one of the most light-hearted songs I think Modest Mouse will ever put out, and I love the way Brock screams the "have I told'ya? you could really get it on, you could really get it oh-oh-ohhhwwwnnnn!" I've often tried to imitate, though I have found others around me are mostly offended. |

I think the correct lyrics are... Little bird I invited, Build your own nest Little bird, I've got branches above my head Sway with me aimlessly, Walk over mountains high, Find winter nights with me, Hang your hammock high over me Hand over flight and all fright to me Cup your hands and be calm. Bring tears on me be a storm. Be pleasant, Be classy, Be born. Go ahead - be the bird in my horns. Come with me. Come with me. |

i don't think it bothers him. we are all familiar with nostalgia, and i know that is something everyone in the whole wide world can relate to. i also know it is one of the most confusing feelings out there. i believe that yes, it does bother him that he can't have the times he shared with this girl back - but he doesn't particularly want to be part of her present day life (because her present day life is not what he is missing, he is missing the past) he is looking back on these memories and is content because he knows they were great memories and ones he will always have. it is almost like he misses the time he spent with the girl, moreso than the girl herself. |

when these two albums came out Digital Ash was thought of as a more depressing album than Wide Awake. Though i really like how Digital Ash ends with a surprisingly hopeful song (though still about death) while Wide Awake ends with a surprisingly hopeLESS song (though still about life) - almost as if the general public did not really understand which of the two alubms was really the positive one, and which was the negative. |

i always thought this song was about getting something you thought you wanted, but later realized wasn't worth everything you lost trying to get it. this could be applied to so many things. i don't think it is fair to say it is about alcohol, or cocaine, or drugs of any sort. it could have been, but even so, artists like to write about philosphies or emotions of theirs that pertain to a certain event, not so much the event itself. |

when i saw bright eyes live conor said "this song is abut taking medicine when you aren't really sick. trying to find cures for made-up illnessess. Cocaine is my false cure." it was a wonderful show. one of the best i've ever been to. |

| Bright Eyes – Gold Mine Gutted Lyrics | 20 years ago |

this song makes references to what i would think would be cocaine, though heroin could work too...BUT THE SONG ISN'T ABOUT DOING COCAINE/HEROIN. it is about THE LIFESTYLE led when doing a drug like heroin or cocaine. the song is called gold mine gutted, not smack, not blow. the title isn't some drug reference meant to make sure everyone knows exactly what the song is about. it's called gold mine gutted, and it is called that for a reason. i find the focal point of this song is not infact the drug use, but the people who were in conor's life, before and during the addiction, and the feelings of hopelessness and selfishness a user often feels while in a strong addiction. rarely do artists ever write songs about specific happenings (like using a drug) they seem to concentrate on sensations and emotions that occured during the specific happenings as far as i can tell. and to clear up "IS HE ADDICTED TO COCAINE OR NOT?!?!?!?!!" question. well i saw him live and before playing down a rabbit hole he stated "This song is about taking medication when you aren't sick - trying to find cures for made up illnesses. Cocaine is my false cure." "it is possible to use coke without being addicted." that's also true, but well, after you do cocaine once you want to keep doing it. i don't know if you have ever had experience with using cocaine...most of the time after your first time you want to do it again. you say "okay i can do this once more. no big deal" and if you can find it you will for the seond time and you won't really know why you did it again, but you won't ask yourself why. you start thinking "i could get more used to this" then you find yourself doing it again, and probably saying "okay okay this is my last time" but if it keeps showing up and you can get enough money you will keep coming up with excuses to do it "just one more time" i don't imagine conor having a hard time finding cocaine, nor do i see money as a problem to him. |

| Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
The main idea of this song that it seems many look over is that gacy WAS almost exactly like "us". Although as a child he was beaten by his father, Gacy grew to have a strong idea of right from wrong. Gacy knew what he was doing was wrong but continued to do it anyway. This is why when Gacy went to trial for the murders his plea of insanity was instantly turned down. Whether you look at this from a Christian point of view the message is still basically the same. Forget sin is sin is sin, the point is that we are ALL capable of doing what Gacy did, whether you can believe that or not. Gacy is a prime example of how someone who is considered legally "sane" and "normal" could ultimatly end up killing 35 boys. |

the first time i truly understood what this song meant, i was in complete awe that something so beautiful could be so ugly at the same time. i dont like listening to it in front of other people because it makes me feel so uncomfortable and dirty. |

| When i was visiting Europe, I got to see Bright Eyes in concert, and before playing the song he said "This song is about being sick. About needing drugs. About needing cocaine." | |
| Jack Johnson – It's All Understood Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
"And fact is only what you believe. And fact and fiction work as a team." I love that line because it is so true. People will believe what is easiest to believe and what is easiest is often what someone else tells you to believe. Almost everyone is controlled by the expectations and customs of society, whether they like it/know it or not (and I'm not going to lie to you and say that I'm not one of those poeple). There are very few people that are truley independent individuals. Fear of rejection many times drives our lives more than we would like to admit. This song has a beautiful bittersweet sound to it, and always has a humbling effect on me. |

I agree with you stoppretending. I've always thought this song was talking about a girl being fake....basically what you said so im not going to waste everyone's time and restate it, but I really love this song. I also love how hard it is to state your opinon without someone flippin out on you...they aren't forcing their opinon on you, so clam down. |

| Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics | 21 years ago |

"I've seen a child he's caught in the sad trap of gravity He falls from the lowest branch of the apple tree And lands in the grass, and weeps for his dignity Next time he will not aim so high Yeah next time neither will I" I love this song. I really like how Conor seems to truely believe in the idea that love can save us now, no matter how horrible the world may be becoming. It's such a hopeful song. |

"The Devil's apprentice he gave me some credit He fed me a line and I'll probably regret it" i always thought the "Devil's apprentice" was the big record label. This was the first album with Epic. i could be totally wrong though. |
