@[mandmzz:47843] It was 6:01pm though. The line is obviously about King, but I wonder why Bono said "early morning". "...fatally shot ... on April 4, 1968, at 6:01 p.m. CST. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died at 7:05 p.m." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Martin_Luther_King_Jr. |

| @[Paymaan:33347] My guess is that it's a metaphor of a rope. He keeps the "ends" of that rope "out" (available), so that they can be tied into a knot, so that the rope will bind the two of them together. | |

Sometimes I wonder if almost the entire 4th verse is quoting her, rather than just the first part of it. That is, if maybe the quotes should be placed like this: She took a mouthful of rain With a gutter full of pills She wrote, "I handled the pain, But it's the hope that kills So take care of yourself And don't worry about me Cause everybody always Everybody always leaves" |

No line breaks, no punctuation? WTF? Here's a readable version... whatever happened to all my plans, all the fun i was supposed to have? where did i go wrong? it passed me by. i let it slip away by working all the time burning out my mind, wasting precious life (chorus) it's just summer somewhere and i think i better go there (anywhere but here) this could be my last chance for me to change my life it's just summer somewhere and i really need to go there it's just summer somewhere and i'll get there i let love walk out the door, cause i don't know how to have any fun i pushed love out the door cause i'm never at ease with anyone no screen no phone no fax work will wait till i get back i'm gone so long, i'm never coming back never going back (chorus) it's gone for good, not only 'til next year there'll be no next year if i don't get out of here (chorus) |

| I think the song is about leaving a bad situation. The author is talking to his girlfriend/wife about leaving ("I think it's time to go"). The people they're leaving ("sleepwalkers") expect them to be perfect and smiling all the time ("Each time I see you force a smile my heart just breaks"), and the situation isn't what he thinks it should be ("I don't believe this is what God ever intended") He has to choose between staying and losing her (maybe they don't approve of the relationship) or leaving with her ("[giving up] the sleepwalkers for the girl, made up my mind ") and he knows they won't understand ("They'll say we love the darkness, but I'll say we hate their half light"). He calls them sleepwalkers because they're just dead inside and he wants more out of life than they're selling. If I had to guess, I'd say the sleepwalkers are a church he was involved in at the time. He thinks that if he can just take her and leave then everything will work out ("The sun is going down, lets follow it out of town / It will shine on us tomorrow when it comes back around / It's gonna be all right") | |
