Yes, RT sampled "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears in this song. The extended live acoustic version sounds fantastic. |

^ Think of a cruise ship (hehe), and imagine the whole ship is destroyed and everything is in 'parts and pieces', with all the little survivors stranded in the water, swimming in every direction for land or a rescue team - anything to save themselves. The line just means that all Amy's different feelings and emotions (eg. sadness, happiness, love, fear etc) clash in her mind so much that in the end she is totally lost about what she *should* feel. She then has to find a way to solve each emotion separately, and do it with no-one else's help - she has to "find her own way out" of the wreckage. That's just what I think anyway (hope it makes sense somehow). |

| Evanescence – Weight of the World Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think lakini521 is correct; Amy did say that the song was about the feeling the pressure from the media and the public, and saying the band won't be brought down by criticism of "Oh this new stuff is weird, why don't you write normal songs like you did on your last album/when Ben was with you?" and they're basically going "NO, we love the music we're making and it will be about how we are NOW, not about the past." "Still in the dark, can you fix me?" -- The "dark" refers to Ev's old songs, how they were mainly about sadness and crying for help. In this line she is asking those critics, "If you want me to write dark and depressing music, if you're living in my past so much, then how do you expect me to grow up and to heal myself?" Alternatively, this could be about the getting back together with an ex. He wants her, but first demands for her to be the same person that she was last time, even though he has seen the changes in her/the way she had suffered ("Like all my screaming has gone unheard"). But she refuses, telling him that too much has occurred since then, she is so much better now and she will NEVER revert back to the person she used to be. |

| Maybe even Ben had missed the deeper meanings in his own song, which is why he calls it "cheesy".. ;) | |
| Evanescence – Like You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"I long to be like you Lie cold in the ground like you.." - Think about it here: Amy said she had written the song from her perspective when she was 6 years old. With this experience at such an early age, she would've learned more about death than most people at that age - and realised that the dead cannot return to life BUT anything that is alive now WILL die, one day. (Which also explains the line, "And though I may have lost my way / All paths lead straight to you" - because she is so lost and confused and hurt by what happened to her sister, she figures that logically, the only way to be with her sister again is to join her.. in death.) For a 6 year old to be introduced to a dark theme such as this, involving someone who she used to be very close to, and especially since death is an experience that many adolescents or even adults have not dealt with at all.... You can't help but feel a whole lot of respect for Amy. The passing of her little sister played a HUGE role in her childhood life, and in the music she creates. You have to give her credit for getting through it all and coming out as the strong woman she is today. |

Wouldn't it be awesome to "lose control" to Lose Control? ;D I think you guys have got the interpretation spot on, though you could see it in other ways as well. It's so unbelievably sexy. Amy's vocals and the instrumentals in the chorus just send chills up your body. |

| Evanescence – The Last Song I'm Wasting on You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is my take on the song's meaning. I'm almost certain it was written about Amy and Ben's relationship, the way he had been treating her, and the ways in which she reacted to that treatment. ____________________ "Sparkling grey Then my own veins.." -- I read somewhere that the lyric was "then" instead of "through", but I could be wrong.. but anyway, Amy had looked into Ben's eyes, which may or may not actually be that colour (?), but "grey" because he saw her coldly and mistreated her, and "sparkling" because despite this, she loved him anyway. "Then my own veins" suggests that because her love was not returned, she was torn apart by his gestures of abuse, and hurt herself ("my own veins" is the metaphor for hurting herself, though it may not be specifically by cutting her wrists). ____________________ "Any more than a whisper Any sudden movement of my heart And I know, I know I'll have to watch them pass away Just get through this day" -- Amy was forced to be so cautious about her actions, like speaking up for herself ("any more than a whisper") and expressing her desires ("any sudden movement of my heart"), because he would immediately crush her dreams, not allowing her to do anything. (It could suggest their clashes when it came to writing music, as Amy has mentioned in interviews.) This was a constant happening, and everyday she just wanted to make her time pass by as quietly as possible, so he wouldn't get riled up and start hurting her again. ____________________ "Give up your way, you could be anything, Give up my way, and lose myself Not today That's too much guilt to pay.." -- She knew that to surrender would be to give herself up; what's the point living a life if you can't lead your own way through it? Then, speaking from a point later on in the relationship, Amy finally refused to give in to him, saying she can't keep doing it and living in the guilt of never taking action. ____________________ "Sickened in the sun You dare tell me you love me But you held me down and screamed you wanted me to die" -- "Sickened in the sun" is a metaphor for being burned by something you thought was good for/to you, or in this case, a metaphor for hypocracy; Ben had convinced her that yes, he DID love her back - practically the next minute he was holding her down and wishing death upon her. ____________________ "..But you held me down and screamed you wanted me to die Honey you know, you know I'd never hurt you that way You're just so pretty in your pain.." -- These lines describe the way he hurt her - brutally, and driven by hate. She's telling him now that she would never hurt him for the same reasons - unlike his straight-out loathing, Amy would hurt him for the sake of enjoying his pain. Because she has been trodden on so many times by him, the feeling of taking her revenge on him and seeing him as the victim gives her a kind of happiness, and she takes a moment to stand back and admire the sight. ____________________ The rest of the song just talks about her path to freedom; how she's changed, how she won't let him overcome her from now on and nothing he can do will stop her from doing what she wants to do in her own life. |

I haven't heard the full version yet, but when the piano first comes in (before "Blame it on me / Set your guilt free") isn't that the same melody in the song Eternal? Because they sound verrrrry similar. |

| Rogue Traders – We're Coming Home Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Posted by James Ash on the official RT forum: ------------------------- We're coming home was original called 'We Could Be Zeroes" (A line you can still here repeated in a robot voice quite late in the track). With that song we really wanted to have someone nice and fast (and non-House music) to really give the album a kick up the arse! The song itself is about being left behind - then having the courage to really stick it to everyone and emerge stronger than ever before... ------------------------- |

| Rogue Traders – Way To Go Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Posted by James Ash on the official RT forum: ------------------------- Way To Go is all about our consumer society. I got the idea for the lyrics when watching TV one night.... I saw an ad for a new Maxda MX5 car - followed immediately by a road traffic warning showing a cyclist going through a car windshield. Then I saw an ad for Sarah Lea cakes followed by a Weight Watchers ad... it really hit me how contradictory the media is - what it tells us we need to do, how we should behave (ie - terrorism - Be Aware - but don't be afriad... etc) - how we should look.... At the end of the day, the only conclusion I could come to was that the only way to deal with life is the fake it as best you can... ------------------------- |

Awesome song, love the use of The Knack's "My Sharona" riffs. Nat Bass is gorgeous in the video; her curly hair matches Cameron McGlinchey's too! (Nat's bf & RT drummer) ^^. According to James Ash, the song is about being the centre of attention; going out to party and having a great time and having everything revolve around you. :] love the Rogues! | Evanescence – I Must Be Dreaming Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Argh, looks like yous have already analysed it. ^^ I think this song is open to any interpretation, since everyone seems to have their own opinion about it. I myself think it's about murder, because the lyrics are so fitting. But yes, it could ver well be about cutting, or abuse. I guess the basic idea is about someone witnessing another person getting hurt, or hurting someone else. |

| Evanescence – Lies Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
This song can be about Jesus Christ, if you wish; although I guess if you're not Christian, it can be about any god, saviour, hero, whatever that you believe in. -------------------------------------------------- The first stanza: "Bound at every limb ... ... I fight for the chance to be lied to again". The victim has been tormented, abused, hurt so badly. The line stating "I fight for the chance to be lied to again" means he wishes for the alternative - being told lies (ie. compliments, "You're so great, you're my friend, life is grand" so on and so forth) and pretending everything is OK. Because in this situation, the victim believes that a life where people feign admiration towards him is better than a life where people freely provoke him. These provocations are the next paragraph - "You will never be strong enough ..." etc. -------------------------------------------------- "But through my tears breaks a blinding light ... ... I will never forsake you." The lyrics best fit a religious meaning ie. Jesus. And as someone stated before, the "bleeding tree" = the Crucifix upon which Jesus died. However for any non-religious meaning: at the peak of the victim's suffering, a hero or saviour or whoever comes out and saves the victim from all the pain. In a non-religious context, the "bleeding tree" and "Rest in me ... ... never forsake you" parts refer to ANYONE the saviour who would sacrifice themselves for you. This could include a parent, relative, mentor, friend, brother or sister, even a complete stranger. I suppose the person could be anyone who the victim shares a close personal bond with, and the saviour will comfort and protect the victim from any harm. -------------------------------------------------- The End. :] Evanescence forever! |

| Evanescence – Understanding (Can't Wash It All Away) Lyrics | 20 years ago |

A deep, beautiful, moving song; IMO though, this song is not about the separation of two people .. but the realisation that they're not alone, because now, they've found each other. Here's my interpretation .. "The pain that grips you ... ... releases life in me" -- One person has just revealed to his deepest, heartbreaking secrets to his partner. I'm sure many of you have felt this: when you and another person you love have a moment where your heart's desires are poured out for each other to see, it's *unbelievably liberating*, and you're like "Oh my God, I'm not alone in this .. I never imagined I'd find someone to share this with." Sharing something mutual and so deep is like *freeing yourself* from the bonds of the silence that you've set upon these secrets ("Releases life in me"). "In our mutual shame ... ... from who we are" -- Both these two people deal with their problems by withdrawing from the outside world, because no-one else understands them. (nb: This isn't always true; just because no-one around you doesn't understand you, doesn't mean there's NO-ONE in the whole world who isn't feeling exactly what you feel - it just takes the hand of fate to find each other. Like the song says, "You're never alone honey .. never." :) Anyway .. "Please don't be afraid ... ... screaming at our hearts" -- She is telling him (or him to her, if you want :P), "Don't be scared when the next day dawns, because now that we've shared everything, we can get through this together, and not fight the battle alone anymore." The line "The dawn will break the silence screaming at our hearts" means that by the time morning comes, what they shared the previous night would have truly sunken in, and they now realised how to fight their fears. "The life that flows inside of you, Burns inside of me" -- The life that he's endured, though it seems normal and the only reality for him, seems so utterly cruel to her and burns her inside, makes her sad for her partner's despair. :( This line is the most powerful one in the whole song to me. "Hold and speak to me ... ... bear it all alone" -- The couple are exchanging vows of mutual trust; basically "Promise me you'll get through this and I promise you that I'll be with you until the end. Don't reject me, because I can't live without you." This also ties in with "God, please don't leave me .. because I'll die if you do." "Can't wash it all away ..." etcetera. -- No matter how hard they try, neither of them can erase the past. With the intro ("You hold the answer ... ... the imprint is always there") it implies that whatever problems, secrets, dark and troubling thoughts you have locked away inside your soul, no matter what they are, ONLY YOU ALONE HAVE THE ANSWER TO BEING FREE OF THEM. And in this song, Understanding, the two people have found the answers to their social seclusion from the rest of humanity: each other. love Evanescence forever. |

| Cradle of Filth – Beneath The Howling Stars Lyrics | 20 years ago |

fadetoflashes's interpretation is spot on. This song is awesome; I love the part in the song describing them having sex ("Tongue unto tongue ..."). "The wench Her tower tombed Tending to Her costume Bore the brunt of the storm When the needle askewed She has Her dogs maul the bitch's wrists through" - As one of Elizabeth's slaves tended to her clothes, she accidentally pierced her; of course this enraged Elizabeth and she murdered the poor woman. "Pounding upon the pauper ridge Earshot of a hunched beldame .. ... .. And because He sought Her loves onslaught He gutted the crone for sport" - Elizabeth toyed with the Count, saying something like "Would you conjugate with this old lady rather than myself?", while referring to a random old beggar. The Count played along with it. The old woman retaliated, basically saying "This bitch here [Elizabeth] will soon get as wasted with age as I am." The Count laughed; Elizabeth was so dazzlingly beautiful that he doubted age would matter to her. Proud, narcissistic Elizabeth, on the other hand, was still heavily insulted by what the hag had said to her, and the Black Count, who promised he would do anything for Elizabeth, destroyed the old woman. |
