apparently bowie wrote this on a long train ride from nyc to la. the shifting sound at the beginning is very much a train. this is when bowie re-invented himself as the thin white druke - a starving, cocaine-riddled (but gorgeous) pale specimen. the cocaine part is about coke: how you feel like a million buck and are entirely unaware of the illusions your mind is creating. |

i love this song. it completely summarizes the way some drugs are - the best thing ever but so horrible. it's like the song right before a comedown. this high is the best, but it's the worst because the drugs just keep digging a hole. the high makes you feel alive, but alive in the most painful, raw way. |
