If anyone has read the Marianne Faithfull autobiography they'll know that this is about a woman (I can't remember her name, any ideas?) Jagger was going out with who was totally in control of him and taking advantage. Then the tables turned and she was under his thumb! read this book it's absolutly brilliant, it mentions how lots of their songs came about. and how 'ruby tuesday's tune was a complete fluke, when Brian Jones was playing around on the recorder (sounds like a flute) they all noticed the brilliant sound it had. It's beautiful! oh yeah and don't think its ''demeaning'', its from Jaggers own experience and it works both ways for men and women. She did it to him first! what goes around.........!! Legend. |

I love this song it's one of the best lyrics I have heard. I especially like the line "And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened your night:
We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all right"
Cohen is saying that obviously they had no real personal connection but just had these passionate moments, it wouldn't matter if the 'sisters of mercy' went off with other men because that's how they make a living. Another perfect line is "don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by the moon" again showing that they were ladies of the night!
The 60's and 70's were some of the best decades for song writing as spectacular as this. We need some more song writers like Cohen, Dylan and Tim Buckley for this era. Rocked up or whatever the fashion but really meaningful and inspiring lyrics.

yeah its obvious but it could be just an image that they want to have too!! an act ya know but anyway yeah 3 of them are gay! the drummer most definitly not cos he was chatting us up a bit. hahaha. Jake is hhhot. oh well its always the gay guys. |

I should withdraw this comment! I just looked it up and Jake says he is gay! I could have sworn he siad they were all hetero on this interview on Austrian T.V channel GOTV! oh well my bad. |

I don't think this song is about the lead singer Jake Shears at all, I don't think he's gay! It prob is about a gay guy coming out but it's not him.I saw an interview with them once, Shears said they are all heterosexual, it's just their image that's camp! |
