being a person who constantly worries about their past & future this song really appeals to me. It's not the positive, happy carpe-diem attitude - not that there's anything wrong with that, but I guess you either have it or you don't and if you're the kind who thinks about their own lives a lot you won't be able to decide to live for the moment. The song captures the moment when you realize that it's no use worrying about your future & your past too much, because you will live to see what the one is like and aren't able to change the other anyway. You won't be able to stop it completely, you will take up these thoughts again and again, but right now you are, for once, able to concentrate on the moment and forget about everything else. you can't even explain why it's happening right now but in the end you decide to appreciate it for as long as it lasts. |

one of those songs i could listen to on end. i like how the song doesn't have an overall subject or story, but every verse is an observation standing on it's own, as it is the case in so many bright eyes songs. Sometimes when listening to the song i repeat these two verses over and over again: "We made love on the living room floor With the noise in the background from a televised war And in that deafening pleasure, I thought I heard someone say "If we walk away, they walk away" But greed is a bottomless pit And our freedom's a joke, we're just taking a piss And the whole world must watch the sad comic display If you're still free, start running away" I remember reading in a music magazine that the "with the noise in the background from a televised war" part could in ten years time be used to describe what life was like in 2005. i agree with that and i also think that's the reason why you associate it with 1984: the song isn't based on the novel, but so much of what has been described in it has come true and conor is excellent in observing it and putting it into words. |

hm, my interpretation of the lyrics to this song is completely different from the others posted so far. actually, i think this song is not at all critical of the "dreamer," but of the society which expects him to stop dreaming and start living the life he's supposed to live, get a job etc. Doesn't the "I'll give you a thousand pounds to show me how you do it Stop being so laissez-faire (which is, by the way, a french term for giving up control over so/sth, used in politics, economy & education) We're all scared of the future" make you think the "singer" (i don't believe kele speaks for himself here but makes up two people with contrasting viewpoints) envies the guy he is talking about? The following verse could still be about irrational fear, which haunts him in his sleep when he thinks of his own future and that of the country he lives in. The "make your peace" line could be a demand to achieve all the goals he had in life so he could die peacefully, but still, what if his only aim ever was to be a dreamer who lives day by day? the "singer" then admits that he himself is already a part of a society which leaves behind the weak to achieve "progress", following the "survival of the fittest"-principle ("you will kill or be killed") the fourth verse once again expresses a kind of sympathy and admiration for the "sleepyhead", while in the last verse the "singer" talks about himself again, how he has plans and dreams he would like to fulfill but can't because he has to wait for better times, earn money possibly, while the "all neon, all surface" part suggests that he will never actually follow his dreams but keeps up his believe in them just to stay alive and sane. Obviously he doesn't want to think about this but rather just kiss his girlfriend/lover/wife and go on with his life. Hm...is there anyone who can see my point? I'd actually like to knnow... |

| as much as i like the music of this song, i think the lyrics are worth a closer look. even if the title "if you fall" suggests a question, i think from the lyrics it becomes obvious that you don't have any choice but to "hold on to love". like getting up or staying warm, it's a part of being human. | |

| i totally agree with you and dragic. he wants to tell her he loves her but isn't sure how she would react ("i can't calculate"), so either she would have to show him she feels the same or he has to get over his fear. I think in the second verse he has missed the right moment to tell her and things got more complicated somehow, so he would like to go back to the start when it would have been easier. | |

| i agree with your comments and i love the song especially for it's lyrics, but i had a really weird experience at an ash show when 400 people were singing along to this song...i wasn't sure whether to believe that there are that many people who like to be different and be glad about it or feel that the lyrics don't mean as much if hundreds of people sing along to them. | |

| definitely my favourite ash song, too, and they are one of my all-time favourite bands who have been around for years in my life. the song always reminds me of going out when i was about 13 or 14, when i just went shopping or to see a movie with some friends but that alone was really exciting. A great song to listen to when you've just fallen in love. it feels good to shout out the "just wanna be / spent sometime with you" lines. i think he has just met a girl but missed the chance to get to tell her how he felt, but it could be about a break-up just as well. |

right from the first time i listened to it, this song struck me as dealing with touring "i got a story it's almost finished; now all i need is someone to tell it too - maybe, thats you." he's telliing a friend or family member who can't be with him about everything that happened so far close to the end of their current tour "our time is borrowed and spent too freely every minute i have needs to be made up - but how?" they spent a lot of time waiting and travelling around, which could be used differently, but at the same time there's no other way to play their music to people "im looking for a nice way to say: "i'm out." i want out." problems came up and for an instant, he would like to quit the band but can't figure out how to say it without hurting the other members and then lets go of the idea alltogether. "i fall asleep with my friends around me only place i know, i feel safe im gonna call this home" having been together as a band for several years, they've become extremly close, so whenever they are together it feels as comfortable and well-known as home. actually this was the line that gave me the idea the song was about touring. "the open road is still miles away ain't nothing serious we still have our fun, oh we had it once but windows open and close thats just how it goes" again, the thought of quitting the band comes up and is pushed away again "dont it feel like sunshine afterall? the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be" have you ever felt how the mood of the crowd and the band at a show influence the other's? if you're onstage and hundreds of people are cheering to you, you couldn't be completely sad, could you? on the other hand, once they come back everything they left behind might have changed considerably and they can't do anythign about it. "im in love with the ordinary i need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear" he needs some time and space for himself, somewhere quiet and, well, ordinary. "well im a little ashamed for asking, but just a little helps it gets me straight again, helps me get over it" maybe he is dealing with the less agreeable parts of being on tour again and talks to his band members about them and how they deal with them. "it might seem like a dream, but it's real to me" obvious, ain't it? making a living from doing what you love, touring the world to play your music in front of huge crowds has to feel like a dream even when you're in the middle of it. "dont it feel like sunshine afterall? the world we love forever, gone we're only just as happy as everyone else seems to be" "you should the canals are freezing you should see me high you should just be here be with me here" he sees and experiences amazing things but is sad that his loved one can't be with him and share them. "it doesnt seem theres hope for me i let you down but i wont give in now not for a million nows / any amount" she probably wasn't happy about him going away for weeks or even months, but he has been working on fulfilling this dream of his for so long he can't let go of it. as always, this is just one of many possible interpretations... |

I would agree with the last few posts: the song is about two people who still are in a relationship of some sort but are going through rough times and considering breaking up. perhaps they put their relation on a break and now they're wondering whether they should pick it up again. In the last bit it seems that she doesn't want to keep it up, but move on instead, while he can't really believe it but accepts it anyway. the great thing about the futures records is that pain, drugs or me and polaris are connected and could be three parts of one story, but also stand for themselves. and as it often happens to me when listening to JEW, some lines make me cry, especially " i feel that when i'm old i'll look at you and know the world was beautiful", but then again you can shout along to "love goes anywhere!" and regain some hope |

well, the first thing that came to my mind when i first listened to the song and read the lyrics was someone being bullied or even beaten up and you just stand there instead of helping them. as some of you mentioned before, you didn't do anythign wrong yourself, but you didn't help either. the song is just a listing of many examples of situations in which people are contributing to everything that's going wrong in the world by remaining passive and you can't even blame them for it, the majority of us is the same. This does not onloy apply to the war in Iraq or the USA, it's the same thing pretty much all over the world. As for the blacklist singers, it's just another example of people turning away, not thinking for themselves, asking why they are blacklisted, but buying into what governments/medias tell them, since they've got jobs and family and whatnot to worry about. |

| I would agree that the song is about a brand new relationship, simply because the singer is so uncertain and insecure about the girl wanting to come along with him.
