| Spoon – I Turn My Camera On Lyrics | 19 years ago |

this seems to be about a guy who copes with things by being apathetic, or "turning his feelings off." this is probably a result of some sort of personal devastation in his life, seeing as he credits this reaction to someone else. so now instead of reacting normally to any kind of disppointment, he brushes it off, despite how he's feeling inside. oh, and this song is completely addicting. |

this song is pretty straightforward. except, i don't believe he loves the person he's singing about. i mean, it just kind of sounds like he's with him/her for the sake of having something to do. he's kind of stuck in a rut, drinking and not really doing anything productive. he wants to make his life better, but he just keeps drinking and seeing this other person. i kind of get the impression that he's hindering this person as well. anyway, just my two cents. |

| i heard "back at home the sacred sisters all pray that the king will come clean." it makes more sense in the king falling in love with the servant girl storyline. | |

correct lyrics are: this happened before, i'm sure it'll happen again it's getting old, i could never know it's not the first time she says it's the last time again (and you're a tease) have fun overseas (no, i'm kidding) give it some time take my advice see these scares on me, i'm just marking territory but I know a million girls would kill to be you right now give me one night inside of your thighs a million girls would kill to be you right now and it's happened before and it'll happen again and when your boyfriend comes home i suggest he keeps you terribly close hey, you never know wouldn't be the first time don't think this will ever end (oh, you're a tease) have fun studying alone (no, i'm kidding) give it some time take my advice see these scars on me i'm just marking territory but i know a million girls would kill to be her right now give me one night inside of your thighs a million girls would kill to be you right now and it's happened before and it'll happen again one thing a girl i want is going to come it's like you're like a zombie when we're together this song is kind of confusing, but i've finally interperated it like this: jesse (or whoever the speaker may be, assuming jesse doesn't always write about himself) meets a girl. her boyfriend is away (i'm guessing abroad, fromt he "have fun overseas" line), but she cheats on him with jesse because he is in a band. both of them have ulterior motives: jesse wants wants sex, and i'm assuming maybe even a relationship by the end of the song. the girl wants bragging rights (and jesse knows this). the girl, however has doubts and wonders if she should stop, but jesse manipulates her, reminding her of her motives ("a million girls would kill to be you right now"). i think jesse also grows attatched to the girl, but he knows she loves her boyfriend (or, at least, will choose him over jesse in the end). to make himself feel better, jesse tells her things like "this will happen before, i'm sure, and it will happen again" and "you're like a zombie when we're together". when she threatens to leave because of this, he just tells her he's kidding. and of course, she goes back to jesse. ah, maipulation. wonder if i'm even slightly on (and if i am, if this is a true story...) |

| Bright Eyes – An Attempt to Tip the Scales Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
this song seems like it could be a continuation of 'if winter ends' from letting off the happiness. chronologically, it would make sense. in 'if winter ends', winter seems to symbolize a depression that won't go away. this sadness seems to be the result of an external factor, most likely a bad break up. in i.w.e, the speaker (i'd like to say conor, but it's who knows if he's writing from experience or not?) seems to be struggling with the fact that he can't get escape this 'winter'. the symbolism with the seasons continues in this song. 'an attempt to tip the scales' is like a follow-up to 'if winter ends'. it could even be a reaction to the person causing the 'eternal winter' (so to speak) telling the speaker to just get over it. this song is a way of saying that telling someone to stop feeling a certain way isn't going to make the person stop. but the speaker also has a more positive outlook on life. now instead of wondering if winter will ever end, he's saying that summer is going to come. he's going to get over winter and start his life out again, for the better. it's kind of specific, but that's what i think. |

i kind of agree. it's more like he's dating this girl and whenever she's not around, he gets paranoid. not because she's done anything that would suggest infidelity, but because he thinks these things up. he's afraid he has/will sabatoge the relationship because of this overwhelming habit of creating bad situations. awesome song. |

| Mae – Tisbury Lane Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i think this is a dark song disguised with a really mellow tune. it seems to be about a girl who wants/is going to commit suicide, and the only person who suspects anything is the singer. ("Please don't give up when it's easy Don't you know that me and Jesus will cheer you on? ") The girl seems depressed because she lost 'him' (whoever 'him' happens to be), and feels everything would be better is he came back. the singer wants her to be happy, so he's hoping 'he' comes back (even though it is so ulikely that it would 'take a miracle'). no one else really knows about this except the speaker, because she goes on with her everyday life and doesn't act sad at all. ("She's going back to the old way She sits in the classroom to learn with the others") at least, that's what i got out of it. |

| Cursive – The Recluse Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
a lot of people are saying this song is about a one-night stand, but considering the meanings of the rest of the songs on this album (selling out, writing songs, etc.), i think that's only half the story. i think it's more about a songwriter being so desperate for material, that he creates situations to write about (in this case, a one-night stand) in hopes that a good song might come out of it. 'and i can hardly get myself out of her bed, for fear of never lying in this bed again' he doesn't know the woman, but he doesn't want to leave because he feels he needs to take in everything about this situation that he can, in order to maybe get a song or two out of it. 'oh christ, i'm not that desperate am i? oh no - oh god - i am' he doesn't want to admit he's this desperate for material, but realizes he is. 'my ego's like my stomach, it keeps shitting what i feed it' it's an ego boost to perform these songs to adoring fans, but deep down, he knows that it's not right to do this. to take advantage of people and create these situations for art's sake. and, well, that's what i've made of it. |
