Led Zeppelin – The Battle of Evermore Lyrics 20 years ago
look, everyone saying that lotr is not an allegory, they are right, tolkien says that allegory is the author directing the will of the reader, he prefers applicibility, which allows the reader to decide for themselves what the book is about. Therefore if you think its about christianity or WW2 or whatever good for you. The point is, they are great books, as well as inspiring every lyric of this great song. I have read lord of the rings too many times, and i am sure of the meaning of all of the lines. I admit it is compelling to call galadriel the queen of light, however, this book is entirely about the battle of the fields of pelenor for minas tirith, of which galadriel plays no part. therefore, it must be eowyn, right before the prince of peace, aragorn, goes to the paths of the dead. dance in the dark of the night sing to the morning light, speaks of the battle in the darkness and the eventual blowing of the horns of the riders of rohan when they welcome the first coming of daylight and hope, and also just the general hope of all for the morning to come out of darkness. They know the Dark Lord, sauron, rides is force because errant riders from faramirs company tell them that osgiliath is being overrun. Because of this they order the evacuation of the fields of pelenor, a farming district, hence throw down your hoes and plows. the riders in the valley below are the riders of rohan, and the angels of avalon are the fallen angels, who ride with aragorn, and from the south east they shall come, and they shall kindle a new light when all hope seems lost, the hope of the seven stars and the white tree, the emblem of the true king of gondor. ok the apples stuff is pretty easy, valley fertile, apples good, valley burned, apples black and brown, and denethor sees this and despairs and goes to look in the palantir, which all the men see as a red glowing in the tower. I think the next lines could be spoke by gandalph himself, he was the rallying point when there was still darkness, for men would quail without him, but when he was near they would take up the battle. He would always say that also there are things even he cannot forsee, so even when the sky looks black, it could change for the light any minute. i think the next two lines are pretty easy, its a pretty long ass night when all the hords of mordor and the dark lord are knocking on your fucking door, and your just looking for a little help. Now, the next line says the pain of war cannot excede the woe of aftermath, this is perhaps just a blanket statement, that the heralds couldnt sing of the loss of the greats until after the battle, such as theoden. because after the war, although much work was to be done, minas tirith bloomed greater than prior to the war, so i think its talking about personal grief, not any permanent destruction. the next line, the drums roll before every stoke of the battering ram grond, which breaks the gate of minas tirith and then the lord of the ringwraiths, the witch king of angmar rides in. This is when the army of rohan arrives, blows its horns and rides on to the field, making the ringwraith retreat. The next line refers to the joy of battle the riders of rohan felt and the great skill with which they fought, and the fires that gave warmth to the dark lords legions at night, was now taken from them as they fall in the face of rohan. The magic runes of gold, could not refer to frodos ring at this point, it makes not sense, that wasnt destroyed during this battle, but the battle before the dark gate, which doesnt seem to fit, and it didnt bring balance, it destroyed evil forever, or so was said at the time. The balance was brought back and the fight made fair when merry struck down the lord of the ringwrath's with his firebrand forged by the men of the westernesse, who put golden runes upon it. The darkness is then lifted from the sky and the hearts of all his men. Sauron's vision is then clouded from everything else, he goes made looking towards the west, allowing frodo to finish his quest and the last hope of all the free peoples of middle-earth. That i know is similar to some accounts, but i think it is comprehensive, and while as with tolkien, the song can have many applicabilities, and can be interpreted different ways, this is how it fits into the book, and any nonsense about the this song being about helms deep or the ring being the golden runes, look for more evidence, the ring was golden, the runes on the ring were fire red and were in the language of the black toungue, it could not be used to bring balance, only destruction for one side or the other.

Dispatch – Open Up Lyrics 21 years ago
does anyone know which member of the band wrote the lyrics? I know braddigan is rather religious and has written several songs with christianity intertwined. This sounds more along the lines of a song chad would write. the line 'i'll tell ya boy when i get back' could be creating that image. the song can be taken on several levels. If you are looking for a dead-on song about Jesus, check out "past the falls"...

Dashboard Confessional – Rapid Hope Loss Lyrics 21 years ago
i've seen this a million times.. it's happened to me, this song helped me figure it out actually...
when girls cheat, they feel bad, and then think if they break up with their bf before he finds out, they are in the clear...
sometimes you've got to fall before you're found out...
yeah, well... i've been there...

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet with Butterfly Wings Lyrics 21 years ago
this song isnt written about billy... the cobain quote is just supporting evidence... its about rejection by god, people who feel unlucky and gypped...
the "only son" stuff about job earlier is right on...
but its about how kids today relate to that idea of god not giving them what they want or feel like they deserve (or so they think)
this song in some ways embodies the psychotic ideas of those idiots who shot up columbine

The Smashing Pumpkins – Thru the Eyes of Ruby Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is about sex and innocence (never/all the way) and the choice to wait until marriage in some cases. he discusses kids rushing to this kinda stuff...
wrapping someone up in always is talking about commitment...dragging a girl in with maybes is something that meatloaf said "lemme sleep on it, i ll give you an answer in the moooooorning"
in some ways it talks about guys pressure girls to do stuff because their "innocence is treasure" to the girls, but "innocence" is death to the desires of guys...
billy courgan does a great job of describing the troubles of youth in MCIS. Check out some of the lyrics... they all sound like cliché kid problems after a while... especially problems associated with stoners and less popular kids....

The Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Lyrics 21 years ago
the album is about teen life... yes.

the song is about pot... porcelina/porcelain bowl or bong (water bong..oceans blue? possibly) (i dont smoke often at all by the way, so forget that i am a pothead)
he is high ("the realm of soft illusions")
floating on the leaves ...what substance to we "float" (get high) on that is leaves? OH YEAH ... POT!
the dilly dally of the bright lit stay (the lit bowl)
the steam of my misfortunes ("we are smoking pot because who cares about the problems i have... what a drag!" ...that kind of idea)
has given me the power to be afraid (when you smoke pot you "bug out" and start to become paranoid"
and in my mind, i'm everyone
and in my mind..... (yeah, this is the "teen" being high)
without a care in this whole world (yeah, one is carefree when smoking pot...)
without a care in this life, it's what you take (pot) that makes it right...
and in my mind i'm everyone
and in my mind i'm everyone of you (everybody's doing it)
you make it right (since others do it, i cant to)
its all alright....
(thoughtless thoughts/hidden thoughts are things said when high that aren't said normally...)
read the lyrics and see if you agree.. if you dont, then you disagree...

The Smashing Pumpkins – Behold! The Night Mare Lyrics 21 years ago
THE SONG IS ABOUT FAITH IN GOD....!!!!!
I've faced the fathoms in your deep (god is represented through water)
Withstood the suitors quiet seige (withstood non believers attempts to dissuay his belief in god)
pulled down the heavens just to please you, appease you (saying that he has and would do anything god asks)
the wind blows and i know (the intangibility of his belief in god, he can't see it, but he can feel it; god is with him)
I can't go on, digging roses from your grave (christianity is a religion that largely morns the death of jesus in some ways, returning to his death again and again -no offense implied there)
to linger on, beyond the beyond. (morning jesus' death in order to get into heaven ..beyond the beyond)
where the willows weep (where plants (live/human life) meet water (symbol of god as said in "fathoms and deep") in heaven man meets god.)
and the whirlpool sleep (where god can rest)
you'll find me (yet again, man and god meeting)
The coarse tide reflects the sky
this is the idea in the psalm of david (in the valley of the shadow of death) that says god is with us even when suffering. god being the tide (water again) reflecting the sky)
and the Night Mare rides on... 2x
(nightmare and mare come from different old english words, one meaning female horse; the other meaning evil spirit. this "night mare" a dark image of a horse that is also this "evil spirit" which is something taht is inevitably part of life... death.)
with a december black psalm (a dark image that shows a direct reference to a psalm) (december being a reference to death -i.e. the december of our years)
and the night mare rides on (the repetition shows the continuity of life and the fact that it will go on even after someone's death)
What I fear is lost here (fearing being on earth or existing without a god existing...we all fear this, we all wondered at some point about the existence of god, this song preaches the contrairy: blind faith)
the wind blows and i know (intangibility, faith, belief...whatever you wanna call it)
all you have to do is run away (god leaving, hard times coming)
and steal yourself from me (steal not only means rob, but to come and go discretely; god is absent and we feel like we are all of the sudden abandonned)
become a mystery to gaze into (we analyze god much more when we are doubting as a society)
you're so cruel in all you do (saying about how god is responsible for everything and things like death are evil)
but still i believe, i believe in you (this is saying that although he feels god leaves him sometimes, he does believe in god... and he has faith in the end ..or finds faith in the end)
so may you come with your own knives (to kill wtih a knife rather than a sword is a cliché of a "sneak attack"; this implies that god takes some people swiftly without warning --possibly inspired by the sudden death of a loved one)
you'll never take me alive (god can take me away, but i wont be living anymore, so we will both lose..bc he wont have my life either, it will be gone)
with all the force of what is true, is there nothing i can do? (with god and predestination as preached by christianity... is there any way for man to change his destiny or his time of death?)
repetition of lines 16-13... then lines 1-3....
the sudden change is taht he says "to hold the flower i can't keep"
this flower is life... it shows how dearly he holds his life and does not want to let it go even though heaven is promised... this song seems to have been inspired by the death of a loved one and refers to his struggle to maintain faith in god)

The Doors – Hello, I Love You Lyrics 21 years ago
the song is about his inability to woo a black girl, as said in the first entry. he wouldn't say such obvious sexual things about pamela, because he considered their love more spiritual than anything else...
it's clear he is talking about a "black/dark" girl when he refers to her as a "dusky jewel". ("Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?")... because "dusky" means dark.
so, yeah, he was d wit da b.

Dispatch – Water Stop Lyrics 21 years ago
its seems as if a girl got involved with a guy with problems
the guy with problems was a pool of water
the girl dove in to the pool (thus diving into the persons problems and their life)
she got in over her head, too attatched to the guy... "when will the water stop"
the guy was consumed with his problems ("sank into yourself")
she went into the pool to try and save this guy from himself
she only ended up losing herself on the way to trying to help him...
she ends up on shore... not with the guy, washed up...
there's no time to get into his life...
(greener's idea is also a good one... the idea about cleaning up her act is great.. maybe i have the guy and girl switched...?)

Dispatch – Past The Falls Lyrics 21 years ago
This song has several references to God/Jesus. Opening with a reference to "the wind" which is a reference to the intangibility of the presence of God. The girl "beneath her window sill" is praying (praying via "awaiting the magic"). The diverting of her eyes to the water "beneath his feet" (Jesus' walking water as told in the Gospels)is showing how faith will help you perservere through the difficult times (not exactly as a distraction, but more as a pillar of strength one can count on). The song is more about faith and BELIEF in Jesus, rather than about the story of Jesus himself.

i agree a lot with corriebird... The song is about someone who isn't satisfied with his life; he still needs mothers hand to soothe and fathers guidence. The "10000 Bridges (strengh in numbers)" is telling of how it is ok to let others help you...
dispatch keeps showing genius in songwriting don't they. the words are not only meaningful, but beautiful...

Dispatch – Elias Lyrics 21 years ago
I spoke to Chad about this song. The beginning is a song that the kids sang in the school at which he tought. It is a song about Jesus, but the entire song is not "necessarily" religious. The rest of the song is based upon real people, his friend elias and family. He said the song is about relying on your friends. Braddigan is a very religious person (bridges, past the falls, etc.). The song is about who you rely on. Its beautiful. It makes me think of my family making sure i've had a better life than they did, so i can see what's beyond section seventeen...
