I did have one other possible meaning to the song, although it is probably not right and just interesting to note. Just as "Until the end of the world" was written about the relationship of Christ and Judas, you could go so far as to speculate if this song is not the relationship of Peter to Jesus. I have already noted the line connected to the calming of the sea and Peter's desire for more. Peter also watched as the Christ was hung, "see the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side." You really can listen to the words and imagine Peter saying them to the Christ, and they make sense. The “she” throughout the song could be lucifer, or temptation and evilness in general, that very presence that is tempting and tearing at Peter (the bed a symbol of temptation and nails the trap of Satan). "You give yourself away", could refer to when Peter draws his sword and cuts off the ear of Christ's captors, only to have the Lord heal the man and go with them willingly. As for the “with or without you”, after Christ has been captured, Peter is recognized by a man as a follower of the Christ. Peter rejects the Lord three times, and weeps. The rest of his life he is hunted by those anti-followers as he attempts to lead Christ’s church. The common consensus is that Peter was eventually captured and crucified also, though he requested that he be crucified upside down, as he did not feel that he merited the same death as his Savior. Anyway, you could say that Peter could not physically live as long as he followed Christ, yet without him he would give into spiritual death. This probably is not at all right, but here it is anyway. |

I just thought that I would get back to some of the comments here. bradleyb, sorry for being "snooty". I am jsut tired of hearing lame interpretations. I don't want to hear your love life or how the song fit what happened to you and some girl. I guess I just can't figure out why Bono says, "this is a song about overcoming drug addiction" and so many people still keep offering lame love girl interpretations. I am just asking that you delve a little deeper considering U2 sees it as a spiritual songs (sees learn2kneel's post) Sp3ratus - I have no idea what the bed of nails means. I wish I had something there. Someone up above gave a good interpretation of the song having to do with God's intervention on a drug addiction. The comment said that "she" reffered to the drug addiction and "you" is God. But I don't know. I feel that he is reffering to addiction at times and God at others, but who knows. I am not really sure about the "with or without you" either. I always felt like it was just him being torn in two. There is this thing that is tearing him apart and this part of him that wants the spiritual side of life. |

learn2kneel You know, that is about the most intelligent analysis of this song that I have seen on this poor page. It’s actually quite ingenious. It would explain the unos instead of uno. Given the focus of the Israelite nation throughout the entire album and the last song, it makes perfect sense. Yahweh, or Jehovah as commonly seen in English, is a Hebrew verb so sacred that The LORD commonly replaced it when translation took place in the bible. It is so sacred that it was a forbidden word in Hebrew, punishable by death. Yahweh is actually the first person conjugation of “to be” in Hebrew. Therefore we see, I am. It expresses the eternal nature of God. He is everlasting. How did you come up with that? |

ubersheep: nice name dick head. I would attempt an explanation here to inform you why U2 is the greatest band in the world, but seeing as how you are a music major, you probably can't comprehend any words with more than two syllables. I've probably already lost you. Nice attempt to sound intelligent with labeling U2 music as linear, name some rock songs that aren't. Linear is not bad anyway, much of classical music is linear, and in fact almost all western music is linear by definition. Its sad, but this just proves my point. A physics major knows music better than a "soon to be music major." Enlighten us some more oh shit for brains music major. Maybe you can fire out some more music jargon from your next music class and persuade as to why U2's music is poorly written. Its a rock song shit face. Get a clue. I am right and you are wrong. By the way, go get a real education and not some degree that amounts to nothing more you becoming an asshole music teacher with his thumb up his ass. Music is a love and passion. It is a hobby and skill that one can acquire and practice and you will never even make enough to pay off your tuition. Try some real classes and leave music to those who know, compose, and love it. Dick head. |

I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill this has strong reference to Revelations concerning the end of the 6000 year period and the second coming of Christ. At the time of his return it is said that the stars will fall from the sky and the moon turn red . . . events such as these will rush in the millenium or last thousand year reign of christ. At this time the first resurection will occur wear all those that have been deemed righteous will rise. This is in revelations and in ezekial of the old testemant. Anywho . . . It sounds as if Bono is saying that he will see his friend again at the time that christ reigns and the dead are resurected. Clearly he says it so much more poetic though . . . |

| Agreed . . . we could all talk less and do more. That may not be a reason to hate anyone, but do what you will. I guess its a fault of his, spending money thriftlessly and not doing as much as he may be able to, but I don't do much either. The music is beautiful in my esteem which is obviously different than your own feelings towards it. I guess I like to think that he is just a normal guy that writes music well, has a lot of faults like anyone, is a little egomaniacal, and can express his feelings in dramatic ways through music. He is definately no saint, but I don't think he is trying to be an ass, and I don't think he is quite as bad as most of the liberal ass hollywood mainstream that think thier uneducated and ignorant ideas should be revered. At least he grew up "seeing" the horrors of poverty and war that can ravage a land. At least he tried to use whatever talents that he might possess towards expressing the feelings of such a sad war torn land. I almost feel embarrassed to stick up for that though as I am writing on a page dedicated to a song like vertigo that cannot even hold a match to the messages that they used to portray. The album as a whole does embody some real passion though and some serious problems that still ravage the middle east and zion (jerusalem) as well as the diseases that killed his father and tear at the poverty stricken classes of the world. | |

Viro, I really coulnd'nt agree more with some of your last statements. I think U2 has lost some passion. I also didn't mean that just because several million people like them that they are good, and your right, there is a lot of crappy music on the charts. I guess my question is, why do you care though? I mean, why are you on a page dedicated to u2 lyrics if you don't like the band? Is it your personal mission to dissuade all listeners of any band you dislike from listening to that music? About the permanent hat and glasses. They are dorky. Bono is huge nerd and I don't know what is up with the need for the edge to cover his head. Bono also dances like a freakin retard on stage They are huge dorks. But in my estimation, that's another thing that makes them cool. Unlike you maybe, I choose the music I listen to by other factors than what they wear, and how they look, and do they fit the type of image that I like. Finally about the giving all thier money to charities. Bono does a ton for under developed countries and poverty stricken people in general. If there is one celbrity that can't be accused of not helping anyone, its bono. What do you want? If I could make several million writing music, what's wrong with that? It doesn't mean that I wrote the music for money, and to prove that I don't need to get rid of it all. What do you have against money? |

| the song is very obvious for anyone who does not look for any depth bradleyb. Bono himself has said it is not a love song. He wrote the song bradleyb, he would know. The great thing is, I guess you can see it however you want. | |

Amen . . . Amen that's about the entire depth of the song, she got banged. I can't believe people would spend this much time talking about a song that carlton herself says was jsut a made up story (gotta make some money some how). |

hey viro, maybe you should relax a little and try to enjoy music. It is interesting, but often, the harshest critics are those that cannot do anything at all. You probably have no personal musical talent and therefore spend your days away critisizing anything that you can get your hands on. When it comes down to it, people can enjoy whatever type of music they want without being told what to do from some talentless music natzi. I prefer U2 because of thier passion. Hell, i don't know if they are the most original group that ever came about, but I know passion when I hear it, and you will never find more passionate music and lyrics. Vertigo might not be the best example of this passion, but it wasn't meant to be. Hell, U2 probably doesn't sit around all day wondering what lifeless ignorant people like Viro think about them, because several million people think they are tremendously talented. |

Well, I just thought that perhaps I could offer a little help. I am theologist and have loved u2 since the second that I heard their first single "Out Of Control". Anyway, the song begins with "see the stone set in your eyes", which is a direct symbolic adage of death. So whose death is Bono referring to? The next line states, "see the thorn twist in your side." This is a very interesting line. Before the Christ was nailed to the cross a crown of thorns was placed on his head. Also it was roman custom to peirce the side of the body after a crucified individual had died. It relieved the fluids that had gathered there from the incredible pressure that developed from hanging in such a position. The connections with the "thorn twist in the side" are very apparent. The song is full of these connections. "slight of hand" was a common accusation of the christ to explain his miracles, just trickery as the saducees and pharisees saw it at the time. Bono sings, "through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all but I want more." This is an amazing line. If you are familiar with the miracles of the Christ you know of the calming of the sea. The twelve apostles and the Christ are on a ship and Jesus is resting. A storm hits and the apostles wake him. He calms the sea and they reach the shore. The line is familiarizes itself with this story and in essence says, you work great miracles and I still want more. This is interesting. Peter, the leader of the twelve often asked for more even after great miracles. The most striking line though is, "my hands are tied, my body bruised." Many religions still believe that the Lord was tied to the cross and not nailed. Bono actually demonstrates the manner of the catholic crucifiction on stage as he sings these lines in Rattle and Hum and crosses his ancles and sticks his arms out wide. There is more, trust me. "give yourself away" as well as the added verse in Rattle and Hum could have very strong ties to the Lord as well. If you are a U2 fan and actually believe this song is a love song, you greatly misunderstand u2. The most beautiful thing about Bono is his ability to write "parables". It can appear to be a simple song with a simple message while having strikingly different meanings. Bono has said himself that he considers the band to be a Christian band. He makes more biblical references throughout an album than a Pastor on Sunday. This song is definately about God, and he himself has spoken about its connection with overcoming drug addiction (just like "running to stand" still and "wide awake"). If you haven't listened to "Until The End Of The World", do so. It is about the relationship between Judas and the Christ according to Bono. I have rattled on long enough, sorry. I just can't have people looking at such beautiful songs as this and not understanding the complexities that make evern more outstanding. Bono is without a doubt, the greatest modern day poet. |
