Arco's Angel – Southbound (Playin' with Guns) Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is fantastic. I imagine a girl who falls on hard times and has to turn tricks, then she finds this person who seems "different" from other "patrons" and thinks they can save her from that life, but they were just like all the rest and leave her on that southbound street.

Three Days Grace – The High Road Lyrics 13 years ago
I feel like this person has clearly made mistakes, he's made some bad choices, but he also has reached out for help. You get the vibe though that whomever he was reaching out to has had enough of dealing with his poor choices and their consequences. But, the singer is still making it clear he will do whatever it takes to make it right and keep that person in his life, despite knowing the type of person he is (prone to fucking up, to put it bluntly).

Also, the line in the chorus is "Will you straighten me out, or make me take the long way around", not "Will you string me out".

Hurt – The Seer Lyrics 13 years ago
I think intervene us makes more sense.. the song to me is clearly about a man walking in on his friend having an affair with his girl. Although what RoleMartyrX says makes sense, even though I can't distinguish between the intervene us lines, they all sound like "intervene us" to me. But won't be the first time I've been wrong :)

I did make a mistake I'm fairly certain about.. the line "Something is out of place
In her driveway
We know it speaks of goodnight"

should be "you know it's me, so goodnight.".

I agree pretty much 100% with the rest of what RoleMartyrX said.

By far and away my favorite song on the new album.

Hurt – That (such a thing) Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if this song is necessarily about heaven, but the verses definitely describe an imaginary world where his dead loved ones are still alive, and the person he loves, loves him back. He only wakes up out of this daydream when he realizes it's not real by the "taste of the tears", and how he can't explain how this wonderful person could have loved him. This is the "moment" of realization, it "won't let you down" because you always have to come back to reality at some point, no matter how sad it is.

If this song doesn't give you the chills I question your status as a human being.

Hurt – Thank You For Listening Lyrics 15 years ago
I tend to look at this song as the opposite of "Et Al". In that song, he's basically saying to his audience, I risked it all to bring you this music, but did it make any difference? You just bob your head but you don't really get the meanings or the pain behind the lyrics. Thank You For Listening is talking to the people who DO get it, and how in a way, knowing there are people who feel the same hurt helps him to cope with the pain in his life.

Lazlo Bane – Superman Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a good song. I take it to mean that there is no end goal in life, so to speak, no matter how hard you work or how hard you try, there's no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (sorry for the horrible metaphor). You can't rely on fate or destiny or whatever to just suddenly make it easy for you- "that deck of tarot cards, won't get you very far, there ain't no hand to break your fall" , where hand means the hand of cards we're dealt in life, everyone dreams one day they'll just 'draw an ace' or what have you, that ends the game with you victorious (or drawing a card from a tarot deck that grants you wealth/happiness/etc). The only thing that's important is being there for people to rely on when things truly get difficult, or just enjoy being together as you go through life, because in the end, that's all there is, there's no "race" to win it all.

Sorry for over-analyzing. Lots of other great songs on the scrubs soundtrack as well, as many people already mentioned.

Buckcherry – Rescue Me Lyrics 17 years ago
For the record..

"Buckcherry rolls into another kind of childhood on another couple of songs. Dave Pelzer's book, A Child Called “It”, about a horrific case of child abuse in California, yielded two songs for BLACK BUTTERFLY – "Child Called It" and the redemptive "Rescue Me." Todd says of A Child Called “It,” there were times when I had to put the book down because the abuse of this boy was so bad, but I felt like the book found me… I was compelled to write this song out of inspiration from this guy’s incredible journey.” "

Concrete Blonde – Long Time Ago Lyrics 17 years ago
Right there with you. This song fit perfectly. It's my opinion that there will never be another show as good as this was. The best writing on TV, the best drama cast, and how many people gave career performances on this show (Glenn Close, Anthony Anderson, Forrest Whitaker.. etc)? But I digress. It ended perfectly, and I'm glad they did the montage in the end credits, because it made you remember why this was the best show for the past 6 years.

Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's definitely, as others have said, his own version of Annabel Lee.

"The poem's narrator describes his love for Annabel Lee, which began many years ago in an unnamed "kingdom by the sea." Though they were young, their love for one another burned with such an intensity that angels became jealous. For that reason, the narrator believes, she was killed. Even so, their love is strong enough that it extends beyond the grave and the narrator believes their two souls are still entwined. Every night, he dreams of Annabel Lee and sees the brightness of her eyes in the stars."

Good stuff. Great song.

Shinedown – Some Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I think he's in love with someone who he wants to be with/be committed to, but the other person rejects the idea of commitment. Maybe this person kind of led him on, but every time things got serious she pushed him away, or she didn't give him a chance to express his feelings. I'm not sure, maybe it went on like that for awhile until he got to the point where he said enough is enough and he had to move on ("to keep my piece of mind"), although he still feels partially responsible for it not working out ("In some ways I failed you"). The whole situation is saddening and frustrating, but he's saying maybe in time he'll understand why it happened the way it did, and he can look back and say even though he lost her, he's fully accepted it and he will be alright. Maybe, some day, when he's older.

That's my take on it. My favorite song on the album by far.

Thrice – Lost Continent Lyrics 18 years ago
kalckel gets it. It's an allusion to Atlantis, and how the time we lived without greed or conflict is fading into distant memory, as if it never existed. If people don't do anything to change that, it will be our undoing.

Dustin Kensrue – Weary Saints Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this song. Its grown on me to a point where I might say it's my favorite off of Please Come Home. I think it's about how sometimes we stray from our paths in life, but we know in the end that God (presumably) will take care of us, and time, sin, and death will not have any real meaning anymore.

The Verve Pipe – Cup Of Tea Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about someone who was in a near death or fatal car accident, and as they're lying there in the wreckage, they look back on their life.

Dustin Kensrue – Pistol Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song, great album.

"If the tiller man taught me anything,
It's that a hard-headed woman is what I need"

Interesting. I'm sure I'm not the first one to notice this but there is a great album by Cat Stevens, called 'Tea for the Tillerman', which is mostly about a spiritual man trying to find meaning/happiness in life, and it contains the song "hard headed woman".

Dustin can write some amazing lyrics, and I can't wait for the new Thrice album to drop.

Cat Stevens – Wild World Lyrics 18 years ago
Definitely about a girl leaving him and breaking his heart in the process. He still loves her and wants her to be happy, but what makes him even more broken up over it is the fact that he knows she will be sad without him, as the world is a scary place and there's a lot of bad out there for her to find while she's not with him.

From Autumn to Ashes – Where Do You Draw The Line? Lyrics 19 years ago
Definitely my favorite off this album. I'm looking forward to the new record, but I have to say I'm going to miss the Ben/Fran combination. It's so damn good, even on songs where it's more subtle like Placentapede. Oh well.

I think this song is about someone being hurt by somebody they care about so many times, they can't take it anymore, despite their feelings, and they have to leave them. The first verse says that basically he's been foolishly optimistic too many times ("I have seen the sunrise just one too many times, with open arms and mind"), and the chorus is saying, look at all the mistakes you've made and things you've done to hurt me, I tried to make it work and I'm going to miss you but it's tearing me apart ("All the amateurs you've knelt before, breaks my mind in two. They surround us. One more night without you").

Kind of fits into the title; you may love or want to be with someone, but if they continually hurt you or take you for granted, where do you draw the line?

Just my take.

Egypt Central – Over and Under Lyrics 19 years ago
This is like the best song I've ever heard. Definitely about overcoming being hurt by someone who doesnt appreciate you or takes you for granted.

I wanted to download this album off iTunes, but unfortunately I read that they were caught up in a major record label merger, and were dropped. As a result they're selling this record independent of a label.

Give these guys a little time and I think they're gonna be huge. They're currently all over satellite radio with this song and "You Make Me Sick". Can't get either one out of my head.

mak89 you may be partially right about the enviornment, but i think there is definitely a duality here. the song is definitely written in terms of a relationship, but who or what the relationship is with is not explicitly clear. You can view it as either a relationship with the enviornment or a personal relationship involving love; either one can be a metaphor for the other.

the lyrics on this new album are top notch, no matter what your interpretation is.

Senses Fail – All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues Lyrics 19 years ago
My opinion is that the episode struck a chord in him or he related to it pretty strongly, and so he wrote a song about his experiences that were similar to what went on in the show. Although, there are plenty of artists who write songs based purely on tv or movies. Your guess is as good as mine, I was merely pointing out the correlation.

I'm fairly certain this song is based on an episode of the same name from the show "Lost". This episode, among other things, portrayed Jack (Matthew Fox), one of the main characters, as he battled his inner demons relating back to his father.

Audioslave – The Curse Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree completely with turkoizdog. He kind of realizes that he's not going to get the girl he wants, and that's just life, but she shouldn't kid herself because she doesn't even know what she's missing, he would make her happy and be her "luck".

I absolutely love the lyrics in this song.

"and if I'm wrong, is that such a crime?"
- she may think he's a fool/outcast/whatever, but why are some people so afraid to even take a chance or try something different? she can laugh at him all she wants - he knows that he's not perfect, but he also knows he is a good person and would treat her well, and she is going to miss out.

Audioslave – #1 Zero Lyrics 19 years ago
I think you guys aren't giving the singer enough credit in this song. Yes he is the "dog" at the feet of someone (presumably a woman) who abuses him despite his loyalty, it seems he has alterior motives. "Just when you think you've left me blind, I will be creeping right up behind" - he knows he's being underestimated and labeled a lap dog, but he has been keeping an eye on her, and when the time is right (when she least expects it) he will come out of nowhere and turn the tables, taking advantage of her instead to get whatever it is he wants.

At least, that's what I got out of it. Great song, great album.

Breaking Benjamin – Forget It Lyrics 19 years ago
I can't believe there aren't any comments for this song. I think it's one of BB's best and most different songs, and one of my current favorites.

Forget It was co-written with Billy Corgan, and it's based on the movie 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', in which a couple undergo a procedure to erase themselves from each other's memories after their relationship goes badly. Ben has stated before that he uses movies as inspirations for songwriting.

My $0.02 is that BB is one of the most underrated bands right now.

Rise Against – Survive Lyrics 19 years ago
^ Agreed. I think it's kind of saying how people tend to have a 'the other man's grass is always greener' type of mentality. Like we see everyone else who seems to be so happy and they have it so great and it must be so easy being them, it's not fair, etc. But in the end, everyone goes through hardships and problems in their own lives, you just have to learn how to deal with it somehow, because that's all there is.

Rise Against – The Good Left Undone Lyrics 19 years ago
I kind of agree with climber boy. To me its more about how he was with someone who was obviously very special to him, but with her best interests in mind he decides to leave her, so she can flourish, etc –
"Return this flower to the dirt,
So it can live
I walk away now."

While he knows it’s what’s best for her, it still saddens him and he regrets it and wishes he could be with her-
"Not a day goes by that I don’t feel its spurn.
There’s a point we pass from which we can’t return.
All because of you
I haven't slept in so long
When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean
longing for the shore
where i can lay my head down
ill follow your voice
all you have to do is shout it out"

but there is still a bright side - she's given him hope, maybe hope that he will find love, or at least hope that his life will lead him to some joy-

"All because of you,
I believe in angels
Not the kind with wings
No, not the kind with halos
the kind that bring you home
when home becomes a strange place"

Just my $0.02. Definitely one of if not my favorite song on the new album.

Thrice – Red Sky Lyrics 19 years ago
I found this semi-old interivew with Dustin backstage after KROQ-FM's Almost Acoustic Christmas concert back in December:

"Overall, I think 'Red Sky' is dealing with the issues that [people] suffer, but in the end things are redeemed and there's a resolution," Kensrue said. "It's got this image of a storm that comes and in the end this unexplained supernatural change [happens] and everything kind of comes right through these dark times. It's about hope in general."

Shinedown – Fake Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song. My interpretation is a little different. It seems to me like he's with a girl who he thought would change or that he would be able to influence her to change, but she didn't; or she's given up on trying to change ("reach for the sky - I thought you never would"). And as a result he knows he's going to have to leave her, but he's afraid and is putting it off and just keeps "faking" those feelings that he still loves her or cares about her. He's pretending everything is fine, but he's waiting for the right time ("i'm open for a new way") to end it.

Just my two cents.

Thrice – Red Sky Lyrics 20 years ago
I adore Dustin's writing ability. To me this song is about being able to see the end coming, whether it's the end of your life, or maybe a part of your life coming to a close; but either to way its definitely a foreboding theme as others have said. Or It could also just be about the captain of a ship realizing hes about to sail into a storm that will kill him and his entire crew, but I like to think theres another layer to it about life in general.

The Used – All That I've Got Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is a little 'pop ish' but hey, who cares? the lyrics are great and its catchy as hell.

in my opinion, i dont think it matters whether the writer had his dog or his one true love in mind when he wrote it. to me its just about feeling really lonely, and trying to make the best of it but at the end of the day the loneliness still brings you down.

xpoetik is right, no matter how you interpret it, its a great song.
