At the Drive-In – Non-Zero Possibility Lyrics 20 years ago
i first heard this band several years ago by accident. a man had recently been fired at my father's job. and for some reason, my dad had received his work truck. in it, along with the fast food and garbage, were a few cds that my dad brought home for me to give a listen too.

it was a while before i finally got around to giving all of cds a chance. but i ended up liking most of them. and this song on this cd was my favorite out of everything. what was weird though is that it didn't give me a good feeling. in fact it somehow gave me the feeling of dying. but i knew there was something really amazing about it just because of that.

sadly i've always been a very self involved little twat, and i at first felt the song meant something closer to what >xero said. i wasn't paying close enough attention and i thought it had to do with depression. i tried relating to the song more than actually listening to the lyrics. and what i originally got from it was more about low self esteem and hating yourself. "lets just paint you a pretty face." is self explanatory and "i was bitten on the entrance." to me was not even getting a chance, because you were born that way.

after a while i finally figured out i was completely wrong. because a lot of the other lyrics didn't fit at all. and it seemed to be more closely related to coping with death, than petty self esteem issues.

poverty and being born with hiv/aids makes a lot more sense. i believe this was the band's original intent. but in the end it's whatever the listener hears.

the thing that really interesting to me though, is even though everyone seemed to have different interpretations of it, ATDI still managed to convey that feeling of death and sadness. like even if you have no grasp on what the lyrics were trying to tell you, you still could get the feeling from it.

and that's what made them a great band.
