The Guess Who – Lightfoot Lyrics 17 years ago
I have a hunch this is about Gordon Lightfoot, fellow Canadian.

As Tall as Lions – Maybe I'm Tired Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about love-shyness. It is a condition where a heterosexual male is scared of rejection by an attractive woman and thus avoids many everyday social behaviors so that rejection is avoided.

The giveaway in this song is in the last two lines: "Our love is true / Just tell by the way I'm looking at you." The guy is too shy to tell the girl that he likes her. The first stanza is a message to other men to not become like him - go after someone you like and suck up the fears you may have. He also lets others know that she'll want to start playing games with their hearts - something love-shys absolutely despise.

Our love-shy protagonist alludes how he feels with the words "Well maybe I'm just tired / Tired of never knowing." Since he can't find the courage to tell her his feelings for her, his life is absolutely miserable.

Love-shyness afflicts about 1.5% of American heterosexual males, and has been researched once, the results published in a now-out-of-print book. It is the most debilitating form of social anxiety (if it can be called that), and more attention needs to be called to it.

Boy Kill Boy – Suzie Lyrics 19 years ago
I just got the EP; haven't listened to it yet. They are currently opening for Echo and the Bunnymen in the US, and I saw the show in Philly last night. They were excellent except for this one slow song that I don't know (couldn't hear what the singer was saying from where I was standing, too close to the stage and speakers).

Radiohead – Morning Bell/Amnesiac Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this is better than the Kid A version, but that one is good as well. I think there's a bassoon in the left ear during the middle that gives it so much soul. I feel like I want to kill myself every time I hear this song because it's so depressing. This is definitely something you'd hear in a nightmare. It feels like Thom just wants to die when he sings "release me," as in "release me from what binds me to this sad life."

Kansas – Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is pretty simple. In Greek mythology, Icarus's father, Daedalus, along with Theseus had slain the Minotaur in the labyrinth on Knossos. However, Icarus was a prisoner in the labyrinth. Thus, Daedalus had constructed wings made of feathers and wax so he and Icarus could fly away. Unfortunately, Icarus flew too close to the sun, as his father had warned him, so the max melted, and he perished in the ocean. The song describes his bravado. Kansas made so many good songs besides "Carry on My Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" - this is one of them.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Blank Page Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think this song is about cheating.

The two lines before the last line: "You are a ghost of my indecision." It's quite clearly about that person who you don't tell that you love him/her. It fits in with the first two lines: "Blank page is all the rage / Never meant to say anything." It describes when you don't betray your feelings about someone else. I think the "Stop sign told me stay home / Told me you were not alone" is the fact that the person that you love is now taken by somebody else. When the narrator finally drove to the 5 and Dime to look for her (presumably, an old hang-out place), she was there no more. This is the story of my life, so I can relate.

Seal – Kiss From A Rose Lyrics 20 years ago
Several items of note:
1. SeventhSwami - "My Generation" was by the Who, not the Beatles.
2. My interpretation of the song: "I compare you to a kiss from a rose" compares Seal's love to injecting heroin, presumably. I haven't tried it, so I can only assume Seal had and thought highly of this person. I think this line best links the two competing hypotheses - the love one and the drug one.

"I've been kissed by a rose on the grey," if you believe my interpretation, has a double meaning - Seal's kiss from his lover and the injection of the drug.
3. "You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain." This love is bittersweet for some reason; there are some strings attached to her, I suppose. Chances are Batman's lover in "Batman Forever" had similar strings attached, perhaps a former villain. I haven't watched the movie, so I'm only guessing.
4. Great ballad! Maybe better than "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing."

Nirvana – Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam Lyrics 20 years ago
Did anyone notice that the chords (especially in the beginning) are very similar to Coldplay's "Clocks"? I'm not saying that Coldplay ripped it off the Vaselines (the third chord is different); I just find the coincidence interesting.

The Get Up Kids – Walking on a Wire Lyrics 20 years ago
And by "found a girl," I mean "met a girl."

The Get Up Kids – Walking on a Wire Lyrics 20 years ago
It's the singer walking on the wire, not the girl. It's hard to tell, but I believe he adds "I'm" in there. He's using parallel structure (all the "ings" at the end: "waiting," "systems failing," walking" refer back to him). To sort of mesh the two main ideas that have been proposed, I believe the singer found a girl who was being abused by another man, thus the "face down on the ground." The singer realizes the girl is crazy for staying with this guy who's abusing her ("found a friend never could be found," ie. she's hopelessly stuck with the other guy). The girl and singer's relationship has come to the point to which he is ready for sex and for her to dump the other guy, yet he realizes that he could never approach her for that, seeing how she's abused. The relationship between the singer and the girl is a very sad one. "I'm walking on a wire on the ground" refers to the feeling of hopelessness he has due to his inability to step in and help the girl. The rest has already been explained.

Doves – Words Lyrics 21 years ago
i can't believe more people haven't listened to them - they're kind of like Coldplay, so you'd think they'd gather a large bandwagon. it's probably because they don't tour the US. this song, though, is just plain awesome with the "i won't let anything get in my way" message - a really positive song. for all you fans, the third album's coming out in March '05...can't wait!
