Ani DiFranco – Rain Check Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the mood of this song, and I love how Ani describes the smallest things a person does: "you walked me to my car draped your arm on my open door"...
someone else wouldn't have the sensitivity to notice that he even did that, let alone write a song about it!
beautiful...
does anyone know what "jump-jigging" means?

Ani DiFranco – Light of Some Kind Lyrics 20 years ago
what I love about this song is that it's written with such raw emotion- she makes u feel with her all these really exausting feelings and thoughts that she's been having about life and love - "and i hope i never improve my game
yeah i'd rather have these things weighing on my mind" in a way it's a completely ridiculous thought but one that u can just totally relate to. plus it's written with so much vulnerability - she basically is critisising and hating herself for the entire 4 minutes of the song...

Ani DiFranco – What If No One's Watching? Lyrics 21 years ago
To me this song is about not being afraid to question things-- even if in the end you decide that someone is "watching", the fact that you put thought into it and questioned it makes your belief alot more powerful, rather than "just an idea someone put in your head" .

Joni Mitchell – River Lyrics 21 years ago
There's a very important fact about this song that I noticed you've all neglected to mention: Joni Mitchell is Canadian but she moved to California to be a hippie and pursue her music career, the song is about her spending christmas in a place and a way that is so foreign to her -- no snow no ice skating... (honestly, I'm jewish so whenever christmas comes along I feel like I'm being smothered in cheesyness, but I have spent it in canada a couple times and parts of it really are magical like she describes---- the snow, ice skating, amazing lights everywhere etc.)
It's a song about wanting to get away from everything and go back to simpler more innocent times!!

Ani DiFranco – Itch Lyrics 21 years ago
I love the way she captures such strong feelings with so few words -- "yours was the hardest itch to relieve" -- the exact way you feel when you're very hurt, like you've got this annoying itch that just won't go away- and the more you scratch it the longer it will stay- meaning the more you think about it and try to analize everything the more hurt you're gonna get-- sometimes you just hafta "cut the umbilical cord "!

the music is amazing too!!

Liz Phair – Divorce Song Lyrics 21 years ago
this is a great song-- it's kinda depressing but really captures the feeling of a break up-- you're deeply hurt, vengful and sorry- all at the same time.

Ani DiFranco – Roll With It Lyrics 21 years ago
shes getting pissed off about people always telling her to "roll with it" meaning to face facts and stop trying to change the world-- she feels that people should be active, take a stand, and try to change things.......

Ani DiFranco – Asking Too Much Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with what some of you said about demanding more from eachother but my theory is-- she wrote the entire song, and then looked back at it and realized that maybe she should try giving people a little more slack and not expect them to "don't ask me to put words to all the spaces between the notes " I mean people cant read your mind and as much youd like to have someone who can see into your soul and understand you without you having to say a word I think that in the end she does realize that her expectations are a bit unrealistic-- and to prove my point she does name the song "asking too much".

Alanis Morissette – Unsent Lyrics 21 years ago
I think the most important part of the song hasn't been mentioned- the title "unsent"- these are all things she feels toward her exes but would never have the balls to actually say to them.

Elliott Smith – Say Yes Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's about a guy who is so used to getting hurt that he has absolutely no faith in people anymore-- I mean he talks about the girl "whos still around the morning after" like shes the most pure and good person he has ever met just because she hasn't dumped him yet-- he'd like to believe that shes not like everyone else but hes come to a point where it's so hard for him to be vulnerable and actually tell her how he feels -- he says " say yes" like it has to come from her because hes given up on being the active one.
( honestly, I've been listening to this song for years and this is always how I understood it but looking at the lyrics im not sure if it makes much sense)

Ani DiFranco – God's Country Lyrics 21 years ago
It's not one of her deepest songs, but I think it's beautiful how she can take something so banal like getting a driving ticket and turn it into an artwork-- its one of the things that are so great about her.

Ani DiFranco – In or Out Lyrics 21 years ago
I understand the whole bisexual part of it but i think it could also be seen on a different level-- the fact that people are always pressuring you to define yourself and put yourself in a box-- I think it's about being a more complex human being who has alot of different thoughts and feelings-- she hates the idea of being pressured to define herself-- but at the same time she doesn't feel that she could commit to one thing because at this point in her life she doesn't know if she'll think the same thing tommorow--
