Modest Mouse – The Good Times Are Killing Me Lyrics 21 years ago
For the people taking the "yeah, well he was better when he was doing acid..." tip, uh, have you listened to the song? I mean, I love this song, love it, but there is such a heavy sadness, like he's trapped into the lifestyle he's in... The good times are killing me? Most recreational users wouldn't say such a thing. I think it is clearly a statement of "yeah, shit's fucked up right now, and it could very easily kill me..." in a very literal way... I mean, it's not secret that the lead singer likes to drive intoxicated and purposefully bought a volvo specifically to blend in with other cars and not get pulled over...
Love the music, but it makes me sad to hear the kind of despair that this song suggests... Even in the vocals/instrumentation... I mean, that's just me putting my spin on it, i know, but that's i guess what it means to me....
yeah...

Death Cab for Cutie – Champagne from a Paper Cup Lyrics 21 years ago
i didn't get that deep with it, but just thought that the image of champagne from a paper cup is really a kind of tragic idea. I can't really explain it, or put my finger on why.... It has something to do with the regular image we get of champagne, you know, crytal flutes and all, but also just... Agh, something about visualizing this guy getting sloshed on champagne from that damn paper cup and then getting up the confidence to take some girl home (i'm drunk enough to drive you home now...) ...
but that is just cause I take this song very much at face value, unsure of why...

Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics 21 years ago
Gregface: Uh, people read books. Don't worry about that. Not everyone has read 1984, but then again not everyone has read The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, or Grapes of Wraith, you dig? Don't get all uppity cause someone hasn't read a certain book. There are more books in the world to read than there is time to read them, so, yeah, relax.

Now that I got that out of the way, I think you can read into this song many ways. A lot of people say it is anti-bush, but I think it is more a reflection on the modern world at large. The general apathy among people towards what is happening around them, the sense of being unable to make a real change in anything, that kind of expression.
I see the 1984 reference, but it could just be that at one point Thom read that book and years later bits creeped in. I don't think he made it an obvious point to reference it. Could be one of those collective conciousness moments...
Uh, yeah... That's all i got.

OutKast – Return Of The "G" Lyrics 21 years ago
Without really getting into the lyrics, I will just say that this was the first song of Outkast's that I actually sat down and listened to, and really turned me on to them... Between Aquemini and ATliens, they really went deep into some subjects that most rappers wouldn't even touch... And that's what I love em for... But, on the topic of this song, it is just real real nice. And the production on it? Woooo... That beat hits, and it just goes with the subject of the song real well.
My favorite line? "lets talk about time travelin, rhyme javelin, somethin mind unravelin, GET DOWN!" - cause it takes this esoteric approach, like let's talk about something more than what a lot of other artists were rapping about at the time...
but uh... yeah :)
