The ARG totally explains this song and from that the meaning is really obvious.
HOWEVER, *evil snicker* if you listen to the words and the music and the way he sings it sounds like it could be a parallel to gay sex (or some other forbidden sex from a female's perspective). He is being violated internally by this person and the government disapprove of his sexuality but he doesn't care, he's addicted to the raw passion and the feeling he gets when he orgasms from it. (The turning into God phrase referencing Closer).
Not the intended meaning probably, but an awesome one all the same. |

I agree with the previous post about being a puppet doing what he is told but has anyone figured out the reason for the title? The term Et Al means "with others" in latin. The play on words is a little confusing to me. Is he saying that he is just one of many in this cycle with this people he is singing to? Like a trick of the week type thing? Any ideas? |

I think everyone is overanalyzing this song actually. Yeah the whole bit about the guy picking up a girl in a bar is on point but that's all I agree with.
I think he's been trying so long to figure out how to talk to her that finally he's just going to go for it. When he gets up to talking to her he doesn't know what to say so he says that somebody told me bit. It personifies the stupid crap guys say when trying to pick up a girl. It makes no sense but it's all he could come up with on the spot. This is also a way for him to figure out if she's single because she could say "um that's funny but you must be thinking of someone else because I'm single". I think it's honestly just a nervous attempt at a pick up line. |

I think this song is about being in a relationship with someone who does drugs and just dealing with them through their highs. It seems like he feels useless and that he isn't enough for her because she still has to use drugs and he feels like he's losing her to the drugs. I think the drug of choice is heroin because of the silver spoon and blue skin references but it could be anything. I love the way his voice goes from haunting depiction to desperate screams. Very eery and emotional song, love it. See Hurt live they are amazingly talented musicians. |

Ok now I'm really confused. I went to the 10 Years concert last night and Wasteland was the last song. Right before it started he was saying how when bands become famous all the work they go through comes down to the one song that starts it all, referring to this one. He went on to say that the first hit is really what ends up defining a band despite all their work. And then he goes so do you guys want to know the meaning of this song? I doubt anyone else did, they just wanted him to play it, but I perked up and then he said something I was completely not expecting he goes find the song by a guy named John Prine called Sam Stone. HUH?! So I did. And here it is: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=143156 I thought if he was going to say anything about it at the concert it was going to clear up confusions but in my opinion it kinda makes it more confusing. Then again he was taking gulps of cheap wine between each song and that was the last so there is NO telling his state of mind when he said that (he still sang it amazing though, of course). Anyways the concert was awesome I recommend seeing them live if you get a chance. His face paint was a bit much but whatever. So now we have a hint of what it means, straight from the mouth of the guy that wrote it. Hope this helps. |

I agree with the suicide jump interpretation. There have been many times when I'll be listening to the song and I can picture a girl throwing herself off a building and falling in slow motion with her eyes closed and a smile on her face, thinking that this act will end her pain. The music definitely makes the theme of the song feel tragic and dramatic like a public suicide would be. The screaming is people watching her fall. It's a bit over the top and obnoxious but definitely adds to the scary effect. The verses are like describing her last moments when she's on her way to commit this act and how she feels completely content and nothing can touch her. |

No I haven't. The point of this website is interpreting and discussing the meaning to a song. That is what I've done. This is the only song I can see 2 very distinct meanings to. Having gone through a drug addiction myself the meaning I first thought of when hearing it was the one you posted almost to the T so don't think I disagree with you. But having read other people's thoughts on it I would have to agree with them as well. It's odd that there are 2 meanings so diverse but that doesn't mean it can't happen. I just get sick of 2 sides arguing over who is right about a song. Posting your opinion is one thing, fighting that it's the only right possibility is ridiculous. Unless you personally conversed with the writer of the song and he told you the meaning, there is no guarantee that any of these posts are correct. THAT is the purpose of this website, tossing around probably incorrect interpretations of songs that have had significant impact on us. |

It's really bad when you're addicted to a person and a drug at the same time and both are ruining your life in tag team formation. This song always reminds me of that time in my life. One thing I've notived is that some addictions are easily let go and forgotton about, and some linger long after it's gone. I hate how the addiction to destructive people is harder to recover from than destructive habits. Weird how the heart works. |

Has any of you ever considered the fact that this song might actually have two meanings? There seems to be consistancy in the two interpretations people have. And if you relate the fish out of water video to the heroin addiction interpretation they seem to coincide very strongly. Both issues are intense and very powerful and send a message. Arguing about which is right might actually be a complete waste of time because maybe they are both right. Who cares what the initial intent was when the song was written. The lyrics vividly and correctly describe two equally important stories and the band released a video for each. Accept both interpretations or at the very least accept the fact that this amazing song can relate to so many people. When it really comes down to it, you will relate to and interpret this song how you want to anyways so it doesn't matter who's right and who's wrong. It is an amazing song, let's leave it at that. |

i tend to think a lot of songs are about suicide (have you noticed that certain people always have the same sort of interpretation no matter what the song?) and this one too. but this one is sorta different. i actually think its about the friend of the person that has the problem (drugs, suicidal, self injury, alcohol) and a lot of people know about the problem. the friend defends their problematic buddy but is getting sick of the endless cycle that comes with many of these problems. i want to think that the problem is potentially lethal because of the "making your heart stop just before you hit the floor" part. like hes saying youre going to die because of your obsession/addiction and i wont defend you then. the song talks about a lot of lying on the part of the messed up one and fights they have because of it. its pretty hardcore song if you take it seriosly (which apparently a few dont).
hmm i just had a thought that it could be about knowing someone whos bipolar. all of the ups and downs of manic depression. fits pretty good. oh well its open to interpretation those are just a few of my ideas. |

i think this song song is about the deepest of despair. many who have felt it seem to agree that when they hear this song its like a song about their soul.
i think this song is about the day before the 'she' in this song commits/attempts suicide. shes been feeling down for a year and cannt stand remaining in the fake place that shes in so shes going to end it all. she doesnt want to fight, the light is gone from her eyes, its clear shes depressed. but shes willing to give the world one last chance and postpone her action. "one last chance to feel alright". i think this song is about that last day before she does it (or possibly multiple last days as she either cant make up her mind or keeps chickening out) and the internal struggle she faces.
i think she calls her life a paradise as a sarcasm. like shes supposed to be this happy woman in her prime enjoying herself but it doesnt seem like any of that to her. its clearly not a paradise to her. and when she closes her eyes she sees what she could be had this depression not taken her down.
i dont quite understand the use of the 3rd person in this song. either shes singing about someone she knows or, what i tend to think, shes singing about herself objectively. like shes trying to convince herself that this isnt how shes supposed to feel and that she needs to "let it out" before it consumes her on her "last chance".
the way the song is sung seems very very desperate to me which adds to its beauty. either vanessa feels very strongly about this because she knows someone actually like this or she just has an amazing ability to capture the spirit of the song in her voice.
anyways thats just my interpretation, sorry its so long but after listening to a song so much for so long a story just tends to form in your mind. |
