I think this a song of realization, specifically the brutal reality of New York or any major city. The realization of the fact that people are overrun by the power of money and selfishness. I feel that the rose trees are symbolic for the growing of relationships, which would explain "I thank they Lord there's people out there like you" showing the appreciation for whomever he speaks of. I think the chorus shows what these people are missing, "turn around and say good morning to the night" shows how these people are letting life pass them by, and "for unless they see the sky, but they can't and that is why, they know not if it's dark outside or light" shows that they don't even know what they're missing. And the major point of what they are missing is the rose trees, friends, lovers, whatever Taupin means by the rose trees. Then finally the last verse just solidifies everything by talking about the rich man riding the subway and the hobo being left behind, shows the lack of compassion these mona lisas and mad hatters have. But the people (or rose trees) that "I have found" are not like that, and "I thank the Lord." Little lengthy, but I wanted to get everything across. |

You're actually both wrong, this song according to Bobby Whitlock (pianist, guitarist and vocals on album) this is a song about a woman that Clapton had a short lived fling with during these sessions. The woman didn't speak English and the affair didn't last long, but it is about her nonetheless. And another thing, Whitlock wrote more on this song than Clapton himself did. Hope I didn't ruin anything for anyone. |

Kafziel, how could you say that Bernie and Elton "did each other?" Honestly, Bernie is heterosexual and Elton has admitted publicly that he thought of Bernie in that sense, but quickly ended it because Bernie IS STRAIGHT. |

First of all it is "Bennie" and not "Benny." Secondly this song was written as a parody of glamrock Garry Glitter etc. It is about the band "Bennie and the Jets" Bennie is the lead singer, who kids of the time are in love with, and parents do not approve of. There is no symbolism in this song, just read it and you can tell what it is about.
By the way the misspelling of the title is really annoying is there anyway to get somebody to change that? |

To Zinbobdan, I am pretty sick of John ripping on Paul about some songs he's written, it's not like Paul had a knife to his throat forcing him into certain prductions. John blamed Paul because it didn't go to number one, and that's B.S., I love John, and I love Paul, I just think it is very typical of John to blame somebody else for his song not being what he wanted it to be. |
