Manchester Orchestra – Shake It Out Lyrics 15 years ago
this is about overcoming alcoholism, which is mentioned as being a problem in several other songs.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm 90% sure.

I'm not gonna go through the lyrics, but just think about being like...15 and drinking with your friends at night for fun and after a while realizing that you actually can't stop drinking. so you force yourself to, and you get the shakes.

hence the name.

Poison the Well – Oceanbreast Lyrics 16 years ago
since the posted lyrics are most definitely wrong and there are no official ones out, I listened to the song about 10 times and tried to come up with them on my own(not easy).

here goes nothin

oceanbreast -

coming back from the body of wet
carry with me my conquest
come without emotion on a lie of thread
why do I even do this anymore
I don't enjoy it, I loathe it
this world now has sealed views
wonder whether it's only me who see's it
squeaky liquid image out of the air
engines don't fail me now
you'll burn letters in the sky
this world now has sealed views
wonder whether it's only me who see's it
oh if everyone around here is always safe
why does the sky surround them
this world now has sealed views
give me deathbed,
give me water and bliss
always inside this cage
away from grotesque outdoors
I want to be inside with them.

if this is right, I think the song is about frustration with the fact that people don't want to leave their little box and try something new. I remember hearing something about them having various problems with their label about what the sound of this album should be like(the label wanted a more mainstream sound, I'd imagine) and I think that's what this is about. him wishing to be more naive and simplistic and not have that drive to always want to move in a new direction.

I could be wrong.

The Shins – A Comet Appears Lyrics 18 years ago
basically, to sum it up, think it's about people, and how they take such effort to make themselves better in whatever way they feel will be effective, but in the end we're all lonely, and need a little love, and it's such a rare thing these days. the lyrics themselves are just basic generalizations about many peoples lives, and the choices they make, and the things they do to get over the loneliness.(i.e. drinking, self-mutilation, plastic surgery, suicide, and most overlooked of all, religion).

much of the second half of the song is(in a nutshell) the futility of life(which coincides with the idea of the first), in that it will inevitably end. basically stating that we spend much of our lives trying to side-step our age, trying to look younger, be younger, but we spend so much time doing it that at some point we realize that in working so hard to stay young, we never really were young, and by then we're older. and death is staring us in the face, even if it's 20-30 years away, we start counting the clock. and as time passes, that clock is all we begin to see.

straight explanations for certain lines go as follows(imo):

"some uber-man I'd make" - very simple, we all want to be legends...but our lives result in nothing more than a blink in time.

"chlorine light on individual sins" - sunlight.

"wily comet" - obvious reference to our lives, and that we aren't leading our lives, our lives are leading us.

"blow on our thumbs and posture" - I'm not positive, but I think this is a reference to our species and making a joke of the FACT of evolution(theory no longer works, people just hold on to it), and the fact whether we make fun of it or not, it's who we are.(our thumbs and posture perticularly stand out between us and other species, as well as a lack of hair and our ability to sweat as a means of cooling, regardless of whether or not it's a result of evolution.)

"there is a numbness"chorus - reference to the thought that as we get older, we begin to feel a seperation from "god"(insert religion here) and begin to doubt such things, mostly because we don't want to die.

"burnt sage" verse - just about collecting your thoughts, preparing to be judged, wondering about the good and bad things you've done, what you could've changed, etc. the first line is just a metaphor for "sage" being old wisdom, and "forest of bygones" simply being things that you've never really gotten over, even though they're infinitesimally unimportant by then.

anyway, sorry to spell out the whole song, and I didn't really read any of the posts before this, so I apologize if somebody has already hit on this or basically proven me wrong(i.e. the songwriter hopped on and simply told what the song was about).

Better Than Ezra – Live Again Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is about his first experience with love, and it being unreciprocated, but they were friends.

and he would constantly want more, and she would constantly want to be friends.

and he would go back and forth between wanting to be the best he could be for her, and absolutely hating her because he wasn't good enough for her.

and when it all came down to it, they needed each other to be there, they needed each other around.

personally, the first person I fell in love with made me grow exponentially as a person, I felt like I was alive for the first time, and for the first time in my life, I started setting goals and going for them, making something of myself, if for no other reason then that futile hope that I might at some point be good enough for her.

and while that never happened, I still needed her, I needed her around to have that motivation, and she needed me around for the same reason.

I think that's what this song is about.

Better Than Ezra – Particle Lyrics 19 years ago
this song, quite simply, is about sex.

it's about having sex, it's about wanting sex anyhow, anytime, anywhere.

even the music itself is like one long buildup to an explosive climax.

this song...is about being a guy.

it's also the best song they ever released, as far as I'm concerned.

as for the metaphor's, just think about them and you'll pick up on it. i.e. a carbon-arc is a light bulb, or "with the light on". and as far as the name goes, "particle" can simply be translated as part of a whole, or two becoming one. just as two elements attract, so do people emotionally...and physically.

The Flaming Lips – She Don't Use Jelly Lyrics 19 years ago
I originally thought that in some way this was about certain kinds of people that get entirely too caught up in their own image and lifestyle (vasaline="slutty" if you will, using music magazines to blow your nose beacuse your that into the music, and tangerine as opposed to normal color treatments, because you want the most real color)...

but I kind of agree with johnapricot now.

Modest Mouse – Four Fingered Fisherman Lyrics 19 years ago
1. I like float on, I love their old stuff way more though. it's unimportant as to what people like, I only hope that people who like their latest album will take the time to get all of their old albums, thus exponentially widening their fanbase.

2. sad sappy sucker was the first lp they recorded and was shelved for several years in trade of another album which is their official first release, I honestly don't remember which album that was though. also, I believe they paid for the recording themselves, I don't think they were signed at the time.

3. although many MM songs are about various drugs, I don't think this song is about weed. I don't honestly know what it's about, but nothing in the song seems to corrolate to it literally or metaphorically(other than "weeds pulling weeds", which hardly counts) enough for me to think it has anything to do with weed.

Poison the Well – Apathy Is A Cold Body Lyrics 21 years ago
for starters, I LOVE this album, I personally think it's one of the greatest overall albums of all time, perticularly of that genre, and I mean that seriously.

I think this song is actually about how he kinda woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and didn't like who he saw. That he really just doesn't like how his life is going, and how his life has gone, and after a bit of inner monologue discussion about where he'll end up if he continues on this route, decides to make a pact with himself to live his life how he sees fit, not how others do.
