Actually, it just came to me. The butcher is himself. He is the butcher for the queen, and he is basically being a butcher for the king, who is the man she yearns for. He would prefer to be the king by her side though as we can see from his lines "I'd be pleased to post your decrees, to fall at your knees, to name all your streets..." |

Agreed that it's such a beautiful, powerful and yet soothing song. Throughout their album, they contain the theme of his unrequited love. The woman he loves still continues to love a man who has left her. He pours out his heart, telling her the lengths that he would go for her love. I don't quite understand that line "...butchering for a king he believes in though he's never seen.." Pretty sure he's speaking of the man she still loves though.
Anyway, one of the many excellent songs on an excellent album. |

Thom Yorke is obviously the greatest lyricist to ever inhabit this sad excuse of a habitat that we call "Earth"....
According to Radiohead, this song is sung for the world of mass marketing and mass consumption. It seems as though Thom is tired of society being so materialistic, resulting in a society with no depth or sincerity. I also concur with the comments above on how society, the people, are so superficial, and attitudes and personalities have become a tool to be used to get ahead in life. Simply genius.
Oh, and erasethesun, if you think this song puts you to sleep, you should listen to No Surprises. Another masterpiece.

Opinionhead, you made an important point regarding the media and its influence on us when it comes to music. I totally agree with you btw. However, I'm wondering why you let them influence you? If you prefer that and don't mind it, I guess there's nothing more to say. But if not, why not dig deeper for other forms of music, for e.g. Indie rock as you mentioned, or music that's big in britain, or different underground bands that exist. You might find that their music is less banal, more creative and original than the common cliched music that you listen to everyday on the radio. I used to listen to the typical pop, pop rock stuff on the radio and mtv until i discovered different avenues of music, and because of that I feel like i've been enlightened. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, hope it makes ya think a bit. Oh, and same for the rest of you out there ;). |

comic2011, think before you type. there is nothing wrong with criticizing bands. It's more or less essential because it promotes better music. And what annoyed me was that Italian Phaeton had to grab his soap box and give a speech on a song with such an obvious message. Next time, make sure the person IS an "american idiot" before you call him one.

Disgorge, of course Sum 41 has more talent than anyone in this room, but thats a poor way to give them credit. Then again that is the only credit you can give them. And what I meant by their fake and their stealing your money is that they sold out. Before they were good, but i sense that their music lost it's quality. It seems like mainstream pop, and its very trendy.. I dunno LP=IMACULATE, Jimmy Page is one of the most talented guitar players of all time. And Robert Plant's vocals are excellent. Linkin Park's songwriting talent is far inferior compared to them. Simple catchy pop tunes are Linkin Park's best tool. And of course bands like Led Zeppelin are stand the test of time, where as linkin park will most likely be forgotten after several decades. |
