Wow, so I've been listening to this song for years now and I love it of course but tonight when I heard it I suddenly interpreted it in a whole new light. I feel like the boy did something awful to her, perhaps cheated on her but they weren't that serious and they were young so it shouldn't have mattered that much but it did. The thing is he still loves her and finds her so beautiful and wants to do whatever it takes to make her happy again and to make her confident again because she's in such a dark place now "It's cold as tomb, and it's dark in your room When I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds" (he can't stop hurting her) but he can't because he knows that he's scum and he just has to let her be. I cheated on my boyfriend of a year and a half a couple months ago and we're working things out but I felt exactly like this for a while. Especially in the line, "you can tell me how vile I already know that I am" He loved me more than anything and I him, but when I screwed up I felt so useless and it hurt so much to see him depressed. Jesse knows he's disgusting but he really did love her and he still does. I I think the worst part is that she thought he was a "safe bet" and they were obviously very steady and knows she's a wreck. I hate/love the line "Holding on to yourself the best you can". It's just so hard when you screw over someone you love and you feel like total shit but they feel even worse because they put so much trust in you and you have to watch them unravel, knowing it's 100% your fault. And there's nothing you can do. And Jesse describes perfectly that you just have to try to stay out of the way in hopes that somehow they'll be less sad eventually, even though all you want to do is be with them because you love them so much. its such a horribly sad song but so beautiful at the same time. and so true. |

i appologize in advance for all the spelling errors. my computer is really messed up and not corperating right now. "Blame it on the Tetons Yeah, I need a scapegoat now No, my dog won't bite you Though it had the right to You ought to give her credit Because she knows I would've let it happen" I still like the idea of the tetons being the french word for breasts but modest mouse seems too sophisticated to just come out and say breasts so like the brilliant musicians that they are, they subsituted it for a word that would make people question what they were really trying to say. I think the first stanza is focused on a girl that he doesnt really like, maybe a ditzy girl or something, and the only reason she's even in his house is because he was physically attracted to her. could of been her tits. or he could just be attracted to her because shes's a beautiful woman and he blames it on the thing the seperates guys from girls. anyways he doesn't want her there and he doesn't even care if his dog bites her. "Blame it on the weekends God, I need a cola now Oh, we mumble loudly Wear our shame so proudly Wore our blank expressions Trying to look interesting Blame it all on me because God, I need a cold one now" the second stanza is about another girl. this one strikes me as the hipster sarcastic type. the only reason he's with her is beacuse it gives him something to do on the weekends and she makes him look cool. but they basically just sit around talking negatively and being completely passive. he realizes that he's being shallow and starts to blame it on himself but he really doesn't even care enough about the situation to have it bother him and he just wants a break from all of this. "All them eager actors Gladly taking credit for the lines created By the people tucked away from sight Is just a window from the room we're bound to If you find a way out Oh, would you just let me know how? Would you just let me know how?" the next is pretty obvioius. actors get payed and praised rediculous amounts to recite the ideas of other people. and then he talks about how site is just your perspective on how to get out of the mess your living in and he's waiting to find someone with the answers. Blame it on the web But the spider's your problem now Language is the liquid That we're all dissolved in Great for solving problems After it creates a problem Blame it on the Tetons God, I need a scapegoat now" Next stanza is saying how it doesn't really matter who or what you blame it on, you still have to deal with the problem at hand. and everyone he knows is just trapped talking and talking amd talking about solving problems but never really taking any action. they just like to hear themselves speak. and talking about all this just causes more problems becaus people start having clashing opinions. he's just looking for someone to blame it on. and again he resorts back to what initially attracted him to the girl he's fighting with in the first place and if it weren't for her beauty/tits than he wouldn't be stuck in this moment arguing about nothing. "Everyone's a building burning With no one to put the fire out Standing at the window looking out Waiting for time to burn us down Everyone's an ocean drowning With no one really to show how They might get a little better air If they turned themselves into a cloud " The last bit i find really deperssing. well the whole songs depressing actually, but particularly this part. it's pretty self explanatory but he's talking about how we're ll just wasting time waiting to burn to the ground and die. and no one can solve the problems at hand because everyone is trapped in their own bulding worrying about how to save themselves and trying to grasp perspective on things. and finally he offers a solution, when it comes to the drowning line. and that ends the song. a soultion. thats all it ever really needed anyway. |

oh and also, i think everyone saying that "You told us of your new life there" is taking it too literally by implying that she moved away. i think shes just in a different state right now. she's either hanging out with a difference crew or shes just changed but i dont think she's physically moved. and "he's got you talking pretty loud" is my absolute favorite line in this song. i love when girls go on and on about their sex lives just to hear themselves talk and to make everyone jealous or something and i lovvve that he's calling her out on it here. |

okay, so i'm thinking that this song is about a girl who is trying to make her ex jealous by slutting it up. first part- "Called to see if your back was still aligned and your sheets were growing grass all on the corners of your bed but you've go too much to wear on your sleeves it has too much to do with me and secretly I want bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred" he still kind of cares how shes been because he's bothering to call or at least think about her and he's obviously refering to lack of sex. he thinks she still wants him but there's just too much history there and he'd rather just let the whole relationship die but can't really get out of it. second part- You told us of your new life there you got someone comin' around gluing tinsel to your crown he's got you talking pretty loud you berate remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes you say you're still in love if it's true what can be done it's hard to leave all those moments behind she's been bragging to everyone about this new guy, or new guys, who bow down to her and treat her real great but she doesnt really care about them and is just trying to make her ex jealous but he obviously realizes its just for show. the 'ailing heat and criminial eyes' bit is just about how she acts so girly and in love but really she doesnt care at all about them and you can see it in her eyes. im wondering if MAYBE she tried to tell the ex that she was still in love with him while seeing these other guys and he just couldnt get over the past so he rejected her and now shes this serial dater. but thats iffy. third part- You tested your metal of doe's skin and petals while kissing the lipless who bleed all the sweetness away she's trying out how hard she can be by hooking up and not caring about the guy shes hooking up with but they all know that she's just a sweet girl and she's too good for that but she wants to prove them wrong. and by doing this, 'kissing the lipless', or getting involved without passion, she's ruining herself and what they think of her. |

| We did spent a whole class in English Lit. on what this song meant. We basically figured out that it was talking about how we walk through life seeing things but not really "seeing things" like we look at them but we don't understand their meanings. And so many people are crying out for help and we just walk on by. I also think it means that we are screwing up our plan and our destiny's and we have already damaged the world enough so we have to reach out in order to save ourselves. The line about mice and men refers to the book and how shitty stuff is and through all the terrible events we just really want a second chance. | When I was little I lvoed this song and I had no idea what it meant. But I just looked up the lyrics for the first time and it really is a sad song. Of course this bitch deserved what she got, but still I feel bad. Its obviously about someone who was rich and beautiful and materialistic and never thought that she could be among the homeless.
