The story behind it is that Martin Gore was seeing a 15 year old in America, and was forced to stop seeing her. The perspective is not that of a little boy's, its Martin talking from a third person view about his trials with the girl and her situation. In the music video, Dave Gahan is the third speaker singing of Martin and his muse. |

Its about an older man looking on a fifteen year old girl that he has befriended. He wishes he could take her away, but she is underage, so its illegal. He wants to take care of her and protect her because he knows what life might be like for her because of her innocence and beauty. At the same time, he is also trying to woo her, hence, with his smile, glances at her, and surprises. In the song, the girl recognizes that this man, her supposed suitor and watchful friend , is not like other men or adults, ('she knows that your mind, is not yet in league, with the rest of the world, and its little intrigues') as he lusts after her, but cares for her much more so. Essentially he feels that he is protecting and loving her, but the darker side is that he wants to commit a sexual act that is *seen* as morally wrong (to society) to a girl so young.
(Believe me, I am close to this song, as I have gone through the same thing.) |

Martin Gore was having an affair with a fifteen year old (if I remember correctly it was in America). If you notice, he's written two songs (or more) about a fifteen year old girl.
(I love these songs, as I have been (and am still) in a similiar situation as the girl and M.Gore)
