I like that this song is vague because it leaves it open to apply your own meaning to it. For me, it's about understanding that oftentimes the desire to be with someone is greater than actually being with them. I like to think it's from the perspective of someone who's been through the chase before and realized that it's best to keep it there because once you give in and get emotionally invested, it ends up hurting you. He's afraid to love her because it then gives her the power to hurt him.
No matter what it's about, it's still hands-down one of the sexiest songs ever. |

| The Shins – New Slang Lyrics
|
This song has always meant a lot to me because it really speaks to me.
"New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in you fries. Hope it's right when you die, old and bony."
I think it all stems from a desire to remain slightly ignorant. Because the moment that you know better, that's when things become complicated. I think he wants to go back to when things were much simpler, when he didn't know the details or the science behind everything. ("Turn me back into the pet that I was when we met, I was happier then with no mindset.") I think that the "new slang" is that tone of voice you take, or those new words you use, when you become jaded. You stop using the old adjectives that once seemed to apply. For example, when you're a kid, you may find something to be "magical" but when you begin to grow and realize that it's not all it's cracked up to be, "magical" may become "bullshit." That'd be your new slang.
This song always makes me think of this one moment at daycare when I was a kid. There was this older girl that always seemed to be able to color inside of the lines and I seriously thought she was AWESOME. Then one day, she gave me one of the pages from her coloring book and I noticed that she went out of the lines a little bit. Just a little bit, but it was enough to make me second-guess her idol status in my 5 or 6 year old brain. |

you ever come across a song that's so applicable to your life that you actually feel compelled the write the lyricist a letter, though you know they'll never read it? this is that song for me. |

| Regina Spektor – Carbon Monoxide Lyrics

I'm not quite sure what message Regina is trying to relay through this song, however I've created a character in mind who accompanies this song: When listening to this song I think of a girl who is completely careless, not at all cautious, more concerned with comfort status of her feet and I like to think that the carbon dioxide ( which if, in reality, is increased leads to loss of consciousness or death ) represents the situations she encounters and glides right through without protection ( e.g., the gas mask ) that would damage or even kill others. |

My interpretation of this song is that she's mocking all of the old cliches and aspirations of those in love: a big house, kids, and a family pet. In the chorus she states that she makes these jokes because she wants to avoid the truth. . I feel that perhaps the reason she's so sarcastic is because she is in love and deep down she actually harbors these desires. |

Praising the one you love. The lyrics are so simple yet beautiful and the flow of it all together makes this one hell of a song. If I were to ever experience love, I would like it to be as this song describes. |

"And if you do not want to see me again. ."
I've never been in a position where I had seriously considered suicide, therefore I honestly can't relate to the majority of this song. I can UNDERSTAND it but I've never been put in the position of this friend he's trying to speak to. However, I've played the role of the man who is singing. I've had several friends who've considered suicide/attempted suicide and so many times I've had to be there to talk them out of it, risking our friendship. I've also had an instance where I lost a good friend for awhile before they realized that what I had done was actually for their benefit. . so this song does speak to me, but certainly not on the level it may to the majority of you. |
