Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with you to a degree. I don't think that the lyrics switch perspective. I think they are solely from the perspective of a rapist... the thing you have to understand about people like that though is that there is something that has occurred in their life to make them become the kind of person who would rape another human being. Some people are born that way with imbalances in their brain chemistry, and some people are sexually abused themselves or experience some other type of traumatic event. I believe that "Closer" is describing a cycle, a cycle that the rapist is trying to use to rationalize his actions.

Nine Inch Nails – We're in This Together Lyrics 15 years ago
Part of what makes this song so tragic is the passion involved in it. It's easy to see how some people would mistake that passion for the kind that is involved in a [lover's] relationship, I mean the song is a love song after all. But like Depeche Mode's 'Sweetest Perfection' and 'Never Let Me Down Again' it's a love song about his relationship with a drug, not with another person.
The lyrics:
"well they've got to kill what we found
well they've got to hate what they fear
well they've got to make it go away
well they've got to make it disappear"
indicate that there is something perverse about the relationship that would cause the people around him to try and intervene. Also, to the people who think this is directed towards his Grandmother: if that's the case, it puts a rather incestuous connotation on the lyrics doesn't it? The lyrics aren't about affectionate love, they're about romantic love hence the whole "king and queen" reference.

Nine Inch Nails – Where Is Everybody? Lyrics 15 years ago
I think Yer Ma is on the right track, as far as the Twilight Episode goes.

It actually makes a lot of sense, if you think about the character from the episode asking the question when he is walking around the abandoned town, "Where is everybody?" and then Reznor replying with the ensuing lyrics. Also, the lyrics

"did you happen to catch
or did it happen so fast
what you thought would always last
has passed you by
is everything speeding up
or am I slowing down
just spinning around"

and

"well okay, enough
you've had your fun
but come on there has got to be someone"

really match up with what was going on in the episode: he kept find traces of people, such burning cigarettes in ashtrays, and if I remember at one point he saw a mannequin he believed was a woman... it started driving him nuts because it was as though he was being teased with the idea of finding another human.
The theme of the Twilight Zone episode was "loneliness", and I think that applies really well to what's going on in Reznor's lyrics. Only Reznor isn't singing specifically about the episode, he just taking the question asked and applying it to his reality: Experiencing the loneliness of being the only human left in a world of inhuman wantons.

Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics 16 years ago
This song makes me think of what having depression is like. You lose touch with yourself, and the world around you. You can see yourself doing things, but it's like that person isn't you, it's some lifeless doll, and you're not there anymore, "you" just disappeared. You want so much to be happy, to have a happy moment. But, anytime you find one of those moments all you can think about is that it's going to end, that it's fleeting. The anxiety of losing that temporary happiness completely cancels it out, and before you know it the moments over, and you're back to that lifeless haze. You become so disconnected that it seems like nothing matters, like consequences are meaningless, but at the same time you feel completely helpless, unable to escape the anxiety and hopelessness of the way you feel.

Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me of Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael".

The lyrics almost sum up the book exactly, I've wondered if the book played any part in inspiring them... but I can't seem to find any place that talks about Trent's meaning behind the song, just people's interpretations.

David Bowie – Space Oddity Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like what Tasteit had to say:
"The way *I* interpreted it when I first heard it and how I still like to interpret it is that Major Tom goes into space. While there, he is fascinated by the beauty, and has some sort of revelation. He says, "My rocket knows the way, tell my wife I love her." And then he intentionally cuts communication/circuit power. Thus, predetermining his suicide. I find it most beautiful that way. And, regardless if it's the correct meaning, I like it best.

So, I don't think it was a "doomed" space mission as much as it is someone deciding to end it in the most beautiful way possible (really - what a way to go... floating forever in space)."

A drug user has a revelation like this... the drugs give them the most beautiful highs, that they are willing to leave the ones they love to stay floating. That's why you have the broken families, they always choose the drug...

David Bowie – Space Oddity Lyrics 16 years ago
Ashes to Ashes:
"Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true

They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed to love
Sordid details following"

The shrieking of nothing is killing
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing

CHORUS
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light but no smoking pistol

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now"

I have to agree with everyone who says Space Oddity is about drug usage. Drugs put you a different mindset/world. Take one strong enough and you can be living your childhood dream of being an astronaut. Everytime I hear this song I picture a serious addict, with a failed life, sitting alone in a room tripping balls about being an astronaut, fantasizing about the life he always thought he would have, accomplished, meaningful, recalling the love he once had for his wife before the drugs entered his life. Having the voices of those who've tried to help him in the back of his head (can you hear me?).
I think the drug interpretation gives the song a more morbid (even meaningful) tone (I mean, what's sadder? An accomplished man who knowingly took a risk, or a man falling from grace, hurting the ones he loved in a fit a self-destruction, isolated from the world lost in his nightmarish fantasies).

Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics 16 years ago
...after reading through more of these, I definitely agree with the confidence high. Trent has a wonderful way of matching his synths to the mood of what he is trying to portray, and there is a definite sort of errr.... what's the word I'd use, I wouldn't quite say happiness, but you do get that sense of over confidence. I still say the need for the gun symbolizes the weakness of the action itself.

Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics 16 years ago
beth46307 hit the nail on the head... It's a statement on the weakness of those who must rape. He's not a "true man" he's not "truly strong" he must rely on guns and force to get what he wants. He's really a very weak man, trying to combat his weakness with denial and force. It's a subject similar to "Closer"... they are both in a way about rape. But, "closer" goes over the desire to reclaim purity through it and the human reasoning for why someone would resort to such, whereas "big man with a gun" goes over the sheer weakness of someone who must resort to it.

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 16 years ago
...oh to add to my earlier post.

This song has also been destroyed for me by the millions of morons who think it's actually just about sex, or a woman. It's pretty pathetic that you hear "fuck like an animal" and you have to take it literally. It never occurred that people use metaphors and similes to describe deeper human emotions???

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about loss of purity...

The whole album "The Downward Spiral" is about just that, a downward spiral... part of going into a downward spiral is loss of purity. When people feel that loss, they feel a sense of judgment, and a desire to rid themselves of that sense. If you've seen the music video that is what the old men looking in on trent symbolize, judgment.

What the lyrics are portraying is trying to regain purity through stealing someone else's. That's why he says "I want to fuck you like an animal, it gets me closer to god" and also "you can have my absence of faith, my everything" it is like an exchange, "I'll rape you of your purity, and leave you with the sense of guilt and unhappiness I had in exchange".

Closest example I can come up with are child molesters. A good majority molest because they were at one point molested... they are left with a burden and a sense of guilt. The only thing that brings them satisfaction is raping something pure.

Trent goes over this subject a few more times from different view points... such as "big man with a gun". Only, whereas "closer" goes over trying to reclaim purity, "big man with a gun" goes over the weakness of it.

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult – ...and This Is What The Devil Does Lyrics 16 years ago
"and this is what the devil does..." and "you liars, repent" makes me think of the hypocrisies of religion... On one hand you have this person preaching to be holy and understanding, yet they constantly accuse and judge... telling everyone around them they need to repent, as if their faith puts them in the place of God himself giving them the right to judge others. Talking about how they "hate", they hate liars... they hate black... hate, that is what the devil is. Religion is itself the essence of evil, it embodies hate and ignorance.

Though honestly, I just think of it as the TKK trademark song...

Yes, AcidSound, David Bowie sings in this song. The song itself is by Nine Inch Nails. It's about the lead singer/lyricist Trent Reznor's battles with drug addiction and self destruction.

Nine Inch Nails – With Teeth Lyrics 17 years ago
This song (like the with teeth album) is about drug addiction. With teeth describes what drugs do to you, they grab onto you with teeth and don't let go.

Once you've started you will never be the same. You find this whole new world, that envelopes you like an ocean. At first it's beautiful, like the best orgasm you've ever had, you can forget all your troubles, but gradually you start to lose touch with the real world. Things around you start to fall apart, in your mental absence. And even if you try to let it go, the addiction wont let go of you. Even can stop using, but the addiction itself will always be sinking it's teeth into your arm, refusing to let go.

The last lines:

I cannot go through this again

She will not let you go
Keeps holding on
This time I'm not coming back

are about relasp, trent is saying that he can't go through it again, he doesn't have the will power to make it through a relasp. If he does relasp, then this time he wont be coming back to the real world.

Devendra Banhart – The Body Breaks Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about love (aka relationships in general). Monty123 said Devendra is a scientist which would explain why he is reffering to bodies and their reactions, instead of souls or something spiritual. Even if you're a scientist you can still believe in love, you just see it as a chemical reaction.

getting back to meanings....

It reminds me of how my boyfriend makes me feel. So happy. With this buring to be with him that is never quenched until we're together. And, how I can't bare to think of him as another human who is one day going to be rotting in the earth. It makes me think of how when I first saw him, and it was just this tiny little crush that bloomed into love. And, how if ever we do part from eachother (which I preffer not to think about) there will always be a spark in my memories of him and I.

London After Midnight – Sacrifice Lyrics 17 years ago
this, like the majority of their songs, is a love song.

I think it's about how him and the person he's in love with have reached the end of their relationship. They've torn eachother to shreds and there's nothing left of either of them to give anymore. So, now he's at a point of wanting to end his life. Not in a selfish way though, he means to sacrifice himself to his lover as a final token of his love for her.

honestly, most of their songs are so overly dramatic they seem cheesy, but despite that, I really like this one, and I think it is one of their deeper ones.

London After Midnight – Your Best Nightmare Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is about a guy who has fantasized about sleeping with a certain girl (most likely a very moral unreachable girl) for quite some time. I take it that she loves him, and he does not love her back, from lyrics like:
She asked me if I...
I told her the truth
I said
"I'm sorry it takes me longer than you"
&
To me lust can be as beautiful as love

so... he gets his wish to sleep with her, and while they're going at it, she tells him she's going to make him go crazy and then falls over dead. My guess would be (and I know this is digging into the song a little too much) that she probably took something to off herself, because he only lusted for her and it broke her heart, and she wanted him to feel the pain she did.

honestly this song has no deep life meanings, unless you want to buy into the lyricist having had something similar to this actually happen to him.

p.s. Ok, a second thing.

Someone wrote that he himself hates this song. If he does, it would probably be because this song ruined his career in the US through peoples' consant misinterpretation of it, and the 80's sterotype it left him with.

Gary Numan – Cars Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is about isolation. It really has nothing to do with cars at all, he just uses them as a metaphor.

He talks about locking himself away, and how it makes him feel safe. Gives him time to himself, and time to think, but at the same time his constant isolation makes him miserable.

When all you're world becomes too much, sometimes you need to leave it, and isolate yourself. That way you can get yourself together, contemplate all that is making you feel the need to be alone. You don't have to give yourself out to all that stresses you, and you are able to once again collect yourself and stablize once more. But, at the same time you bottle things up, and you become dependent on your isolation. Slowly it kills you, and truley is what you need is someone to be there with you, that's what he means when he says, "Will you visit me please, if I open my door?". Eventually, after all of your isolation, you start to think too much, and your thoughts turn in a direction where they really have no business being (depression, and suicide, if you don't understand).

One more thing. I love his newer works, but I hate people who talk about how great Gary Numan is, but how much this song sucks (I don't necessarily mean anyone on the cars comment page). Anyone who claims to like gary numan, but hate this song doesn't understand gary numan. this is just as dark and morbid as his newer works, just with a beat to match the time it was written.

Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to agree the songs about drugs.

"I hope he never lets me down again..." is refering to not wanting to come down from his high. He states it a couple times:
"I never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground"

and as long as he remembers it's the drug controlling him (cause god forbid, if you think you have any control you might get the delusion you can quit) it promises to keep him safe in his high.

Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics 18 years ago
I think someone asked if gore was an athiest, than why did he talk so much about god? well, I don't know whether or not he's an athiest, but his songs about god usually tend to have a hint of sarcasm/resentment to them, just cause you talk of god does not mean you believe... he could simply be stating his reasons for not believing, talking about how BS religion is... I consider myself an atheist, but I still talk about religion, it's such a huge part of every culture that it's kinda hard to ignore

I think the meanings been pretty well covered

God's got a sick sense of humor, because when this girl is in pain and suffering and all she wants is peace, god will not allow it... so she tries to move on, and when she finally finds happiness god comes down to take it all away, laughing at her as she dies.

Nine Inch Nails – Suck (Pigface cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
to elaborate on my last comment:

first off, I love the sort of religious sarcasm that is in most of NIN's songs

k, this song (like most NIN songs) is about the self-destructive ways we try to escape our day-to-day existence

i.e. in this song, drugs

but, the other thing about NIN songs is they tend to tell a kind of story

this story being:

guy & girl...

very high

and like guys and gals sometimes tend to do on drugs... they go at it.

he's just explaining the experience... the feeling of the drugs, his thoughts towards this girl... and how dirty it leaves him in the end

I think the whole drug aspect of the song was pretty well covered... so here's my take on the sex part

his thoughts being:

"she makes it sweater than the sun"
her being there enhances the whole experience, cause, as most of us know... when you're on drugs the sex is usually just a tid bit better

"the temple walls are made of flesh"
again, the undertones of religious sarcasm... a.k.a you're body a temple, god's temple... the sarcasm being the entrance to the temple is between her legs (temple walls, think vaginal walls)

through sex he's saving her, saving her by giving her enough pleasure to temporaily escape her horrid existence...

and in his own way he's like her jesus christ

...well, jesus christ on ecstacy

the last lines are a little self explanitory, in the sexual sense...

the thousand lips and tongues part... is, again, explaining the "experience" of the sex mixed with the drugs

the last line, "I want to do terrible things to you"
like I said, it is about DESTRUCTIVE ways of escaping your pain. though, he is temporaily saving her from her pain, he knows in the end that it will send her further down her own downward spiral, and it will make her initial pain greater... and he wants to do that, the thought of hurting another person... gets him off, is I guess what you would say.
