“Home is where I want to be” --- loneliness ”Pick me up and turn me round” --- he’s been wandering down the wrong path, looking for solace from loneliness, he asks someone to turn him around, onto a better path ”I feel numb - burn with a weak heart” --- he’s physically alive, his candle of life still burns, but deep down he feels numb and weak ”Guess I must be having fun” --- just that general “meh” feeling, life’s not bad but could be better ”The less we say about it the better “ --- the less we dwell on life, the less we think and worry about it, the better ”Make it up as we go along” --- life is unscripted, we just improvise as it happens ”Head in the sky” --- dreaming dreams “Feet on the ground” --- grounded in harsh reality ”It's ok I know nothing's wrong…” --- but still, life’s ok, it’s ok to dream even if you’re grounded in the real world forever ”Hi yo I got plenty of time” --- the comfortable lazy feeling of false security generated by taking the amount of time you have allotted in this life for granted ”Hi yo you got light in your eyes” --- the way you notice small details when the ^ lazy feeling overcomes you, you look deeper into people, noticing their little quirks ”And you're standing here beside me” --- a good friend, a soul mate perhaps ”I love the passing of time” --- see “lazy feeling” above ”Never for money / Always for love” --- the reason behind the truly important things in life ((Cover up and say goodnight … say goodnight)) ((not sure what this line means)) ”Home is where I want to be” --- slight tinge of loneliness revisited ”But I guess I'm already there” --- deep down, home is always with us, within us ”I come home - she lifted up her wings” --- the girl he loves, who now lives with him (or he lives with her), is a true angel to him --- particularly beautiful line b/c it’s so nonchalant, “she lifted up her wings”, sung in such a tone as if she just brushed a strand of hair back from her face, and that gesture just brought him to his knees, that’s how beautifully simple yet heavenly she is ”Guess that this must be the place” --- he finally realizes that this is love where he is ”I can't tell one from another / Did I find you, or you find me?” --- true love at it’s finest, beautifully simple line, yet says so much ((There was a time Before we were born)) ((not sure what this line means)) ”If someone asks, this where I'll be . . . where I'll be” --- he likes being “in love” and wants to remain there forever, he’s leaving an answering machine type thing to the rest of the world, indicating that he finally found a spot to hide away from ever ”Hi yo We drift in and out” --- physical act of making love ”Hi yo sing into my mouth” --- kissing ”Out of all those kinds of people / You got a face with a view” --- points out her uniqueness ”I'm just an animal looking for a home / Share the same space for a minute or two” --- loneliness revisited ”And you love me till my heart stops / Love me till I'm dead” --- intoxicating nature of true love ”Eyes that light up, eyes look through you” --- intimate connection with his lover, leading to her penetrating gazes, she knows his darkest secrets ”Cover up the blank spots” --- she also knows his imperfections and her own nature complements for them ”Hit me on the head Ah ooh” --- head over heels in love |

PATGOD Trivia (http://www.pinkfloyd-co.net/disco/piper/piper_album.html): "Lucifer Sam was originally titled 'Percy The Rat Catcher'. Jenny Spires (Jenny Gentle) a girlfriend of Syd's at the time, bits from the I Ching [the 5,000 year-old Chinese Book of Changes, and his [Syd's] own ideas were mixed together as the inspiration for this ode to Syd's cat." |

| if the R.O. does stand for Roger, the lines make perfect sense - now, looking back, Glimour realizes how much PF lost when they lost Waters... "but they tell me to please go fuck myself / you know you just can't win" could be a reference to moments when PF tried to get RW to come back (anyone know if they ever did ask him?) and RW declined the offer... | |

R.O. ~ ROger waters? might be a stretch b/c TDB was released in '94 and Waters left more than 20 years prior (during The Final Cut in '83)... just my $.02 |

Line Correction: "The ship of fools had just all aground" ---> "The ship of fools had finally ran aground" "Nawarinth" ------> "No warmth" "Cannot be undown" -----> "Cannot be undone" "in hades of gray" ----> "in shades of gray" great song! |

steve you're right, lead is valuable from a soldier's POV -- lead is a synechdoche technique, representing bullets, which are extremely valuable in a war zone; i think there are two ways to interpert why they're valuable: (a). if your side has more "lead" than the enemy, you'll kill 'em faster and go home, and (b). if you get hit with "lead" you'll either be put in the infirmary and hopefully soon go home (or at least get a break from the warfare) or you'll be dead and never have to fight the war anymore. just my $.02 |

this is one of floyd's best, and holds a personal meaning to me - the lines "some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy / banging your head against some bugger's / wall" are exactly what i felt like every time i tried to console my long-distance boyfriend (via IM) and talk him out of suicide or convince him that he's not letting me down and that he shouldn't ever think he's not good enough for me or he's not the perfect guy i wanted... i think almost anyone can relate to that; if not BF/GF then just a friend or maybe even a child who thinks he didn't live up to his parents standards but yet they still love him unconditionally... btw, we've been together for 4 months now and still going strong :-) eh well there's my story... Pink Floyd is phenomenal!! very informative site: http://www.pinkfloyd-co.net |

| the video is amazing (DL here: http://www.equalvision.com/evr/downloads.php ) and relatively accurate in portraying burned out medics... hehe, everyone one of us in ems is a little jaded, but the burn out shown here starts to teeter on a dangerous line... kinda reminds me of that nicholas cage movie, "bringing out the dead" (based on a book by the way, both very good). | |

People, the ENTIRE song is from a FF POV ~ it's done this way to be a post-9/11 (meh, better late than never) tribute of sorts to FD, PD, and EMS. “Cant see nothing in front of me Cant see nothing comin up behind Makin way through this darkness” This is about the initial entry into a burning building… yes, you really can’t see anything through the thick smoke - not even your own hand in front of you. ------------------------------------------- “Cant feel nothing but this chain that binds me” Again, the darkness creates a very lost feeling – the only thing you have to guide you out is a rope tied around you that leads to your partner who is, hopefully, still at a viable exit. ------------------------------------------- “Lost track of how far I\'ve gone How far I\'ve gone and how far I\'ve climbed” These lines play on the fact that you feel lost and disoriented in a smoky, burning building, also emphasizing that the narrating FF has been on the job for a long time, adding emphasis to the magnitude of the job the FD was presented with on 9/11. ------------------------------------------- “On my back\'s a sixty pound stone On the shoulder half mile of line” This is a clear, literal reference to the FF equipment – the “stone” is the O2 tank, part of the FF’s SCBA, and the “line” is the fire hose. ------------------------------------------- “Left the house this mornin Bells were ringin through the air I was wearin the cross on my calling Home was a fire, I come rollin down hill” This is a literal account of getting toned out for the 9/11 job – “left the house” may refer to leaving the family home in the morning to go to work, leaving the actual firehouse to respond to the call b/c it was during his duty-time, or leaving the family home while off-duty b/c he knew he had to help. ------------------------------------------- “The spirits of love stand behind me Faces gone, black eyes burnin bright May the precious blood find me Lord as I stand before you, I realize … I seen Mary at the garden In the garden of a thousand sighs She\'s holdin pictures of our children Dancin in the sky, filled with light May I feel your arms around me May I feel your blood mix with mine The dream of life comes to me Like a catfish dancin on the end of my line” This is a version of a FF’s prayer as he rushes into a building that the narrator thought of and murmured as he was going into the Twin Towers. ------------------------------------------- “Sky of blackness and sorrow Sky of love, sky of tears Sky of glory and sadness Sky of mercy, sky of fear Sky of memory and shadow Your burden fills my arms tonight Sky of lonely and emptiness Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life” These lines are about the thoughts that rush through the narrating FF’s mind as he works at the Twin Towers; thoughts of happiness, sadness, apprehension, hope, despair… ------------------------------------------- “Come on up for the rising Come on up, lay your hands in mine Come on up for the rising Come on up for the rising tonight” A call to men, women, and also God (or whatever higher power you believe in) to come down to Ground Zero and pitch in and help… if anything, to pick up the pieces and make sure each family that lost someone can give them a proper burial. ------------------------------------------- Of all the “Thank You”s you say during the day, take some time and stop by your local EMS station, fire-house, and/or police station and say “Thank You” to them… for risking their life day in and day out for little or no pay, 24/7/365. |
