I think the song's about a guy who asked a girl out and is still waiting for an answer and probably feels a bit out of the loop -- hence the 2 opening lines... and he's saying how he'd be there for her if she'd do the same for him. In the 2nd verse, I think he's saying he just wants to find out whether or not she wants to go out with him 'cos either way, he just wants to know something... |

I can kinda relate with the "Why'd you have to go and pick me? / When you knew that we were different, completely" bit 'cos in my last relationship, my ex and I had very little in common and I was the girl he picked...and he could've had anyone he wanted, probably.... Also, I can totally relate to the "I kinda always knew I'd end up your ex-girlfriend" line 'cos I knew in the back of my mind that my ex and I wouldn't last forever... |

I think the song is about someone who was ahead of their time (like in their thinking and other attributes) and how their peers really don't understand them or something, and a friend is telling them this (hence the title)...
I'm not too sure of any of this, but it's the general meaning I got from listening to "They Never Got You" and I can kinda relate to it since I've been in situations where I didn't really 'get' my peers, and they never seemed to get me... I love the song, btw! |
