One of the best songs on the album...
I KNOW it is about The Lord of The Rings, because the song before it (The Battle of Evermore) and the song after it (Misty Mountain Hop) are both filled with LOTR references. Anyone who knows LOTR an Led Zep knows they have somewhat of an obbsesion with LOTR, on alomost every album there are Tolkien and LOTR references and quotes. Any interpritation of this song should be taken with Tolkien's writings in mind.

Maybe its about a person who pretends to be normal/shallow but is actually deep and interesting, but even after Maynard "throws the obvious" (states what he sees deep inside her) she still won't admit/respond to being a deep and emotional person.

Hello. This is my first post ever.... so hear me out.
I love this song, and this meaning came to me after having a 'toolgasm' every time I heard the song: The song is about (to me) the evolution of conciousness. Mainly, that when we "over analyz" ourselves and our own humanity, and realize that we are devine beings, we become "no longer human". There is a contradiction between respecting and understanding the divinity of the human creature, and still remaining a human, which is just another animal. Thus the challenge of "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human"
