hmmm...seems a lot of ppl are atributing a lot of songs to 9/11. Not saying it's wrong or anything, in fact, I think the previous analysis is very good, but I'lll try to look at this in a light that hasn't been mentioned yet (I think) Suppose this is about a girl who has been abandoned since she was in her teens (i.e. drunk/abusive father, friends pushing her to do drugs, that kind of thing) Crowded streets are cleared away One by one - she used to look down the path of her life, and see friends and family, but as the problems grew, and she left her home, she slowly lost everyone she loved Hollow heroes separate As they run - she used to look up to her family and friends , but when she needed their help, they turned away and left her on her own You're so cold, Keep your hand in mine - she is in a relationship with the narrator of the song, but due to her pst, she's unable/afraid to show emotion Wise men wonder while strong men die - I'll take wise to refer to mind, while strong to refer to body. So the narrator, who cares for her, is trying to figure out and help her through her problems, while the men she's been with in the past have just been for one night stands (i.e. physical attraction), and they all left her without really caring Show me how it ends, it's alright Show me how defenseless you really are - the narrator wants to be with her until the end, and he wants her to open up and tell him her troubles. Satisfied and empty inside That's alright Lets give this another try - Their relationship does involve sex, and she still acts like she's only in it for that, but he tells her to keep trying to overcome her emotional barriers If you find your family, Don't you cry In this land of make believe, Dead and dry - when she finally finds ppl who care for her, she shouldn't doubt them and fling them aside (could also mean he expects her to shed tears of joy, and that she shouldn't cry for too long, because the friendships will last). The "land of make-believe" is just her desperate hope for ppl who truly care for her, and since she doesn't feel she has any, it's "dead and dry" You're so cold but you feel alive - she is still unable to completely open up, but he can feel her emotions and trust starting to come out Lay your hand on me One last time - he'll let her 'use' him for sex one last time, but he knows after that, he will finally be able to break through her emotional defenses and teach her to love and care and trust this interpretation might be a bit weird...but I felt like looking at this song in a different way =P |

I agree with Athlete, that the person's troubles are just too much, and they have to deal with them first, before they can help anyone else I don't feel that this song is about the person lying. In a relationship context, I see it as the person is in love with a friend, but the feeling is not mutual. The person is really devoted to the friend, therefore "I said I'd wait around 'til you need me". But now, the person realizes that they've spent too much time on this relationship will will probably never happen, and have let their own life go to shambles. "I'm short on time" woud refer to the fact that the person has wasted a lot of time on this, and "I'm lonely and I'm to tired to talk" would refer to how they've never really considered anyone else due to this love, and so are still alone. The "too tired to talk" part would be the person growing tired of making their feelings known, and getting nothing in return. In the song, the person is still in love with the other person, but the person realizes that it'll never happen, and it's time to move on |
