Above & Beyond – No One On Earth (Vocals by Zoe Johnston) Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that it's a meta-metaphor. That is, it's about an alien, but that's a metaphor simply for being loved by someone so different from the norm, a stranger in a strange land, so to speak. The whole reason I get the alien image is "in time you'll love me like one of your own" implying that there are others like him somewhere, maybe.

Above & Beyond – Alone Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
Well some people wrestle with demons. Perhaps by wrestling with angels he means that it's the good or compassionate part of him that gets him into trouble and that messes up his life, and that that's the part he has trouble controlling.

Perhaps he is not speaking of being scorned himself, but of seeking to help those who have been scorned, making war against those who scorn others (like said_corpse!)
Azrael is the angel of death, who is writing names in a book as they are born and erasing them as they die. Perhaps he writes what you have suffered as well?

Motorcycle – as the rush comes Lyrics 21 years ago
I can understand how it can get old, just like ecstasy can get old, but if you don't listen to it too often......well especially if you're rolling, but even if you're not, the tiesto mix is almost orgasmic. That sense of being lost in the music and surrendering to whatever may come, the beautiful innocence of a good roll, where you're reduced to a sense of wonder of everything makes life worth living.

Evanescence – Surrender Lyrics 21 years ago
Romantically, there are those who have the urge to merge. She wants to become one with him, but he is one of the other types who see love as a pleasant diversion. I'm not saying that either of these views are correct, though I've been known to take the former, probably less healthy view. But when have someone and you want them strong enough you can absorb part of them and merge against their will. Bad karma though.

Tool – H. Lyrics 21 years ago
I think maynard's just fucking with us in all his interviews (as we know people like trent like to do.) to me, and perhaps to others, this song is about change and moving on no matter how hard it is.

A Perfect Circle – Magdalena Lyrics 21 years ago
Well, a woman's body is her temple, and if she's dancing, she's got a moving temple. I think we all know what the holiest of altars is. I see it as a conflict between the ingrained morals against sexuality (especially women's) and the deep primal urge to just give in to the wild monkey within. Mary magdalene has been seen as an aspect of whatever you want to call the powerful sexual goddess figure that features in most prechristian religions, as has the black madonna. If you read foucault's pendulum, you'll see how there are always women who take on the aspect of the magdalene, the sacred whore. So seeing this in perhaps a stripper, or just anyone who holds sexual power over you is a struggle.

Nine Inch Nails – A Warm Place Lyrics 21 years ago
In every storm there is an eye, where you can step back and realize all you've lost, too tired to feel anything, but without this place, this perspective caused by utter calm, everything is too much to handle

Chevelle – Closure Lyrics 21 years ago
This song hits a note with me because it describes fairly well the ending of my recent relationship of a year and a half. The fact that intellectually you realize that it's over and that it's for the best, but emotionally it's hard to let go. The fact that someone you love will never be yours, even if you are theirs...

Marilyn Manson – Mechanical Animals Lyrics 21 years ago
My opinion is completely different from all those offered thus far, but I think that this is about fame and the loss of humanity that it brings. You lose your soul when you become famous, and indeed, it's manson's anger, poured into his music like an exploding grenade, that made him famous. And anyone he's dating will be a perfect drugged barbie doll, mechanical as well. If you've ever seen suicide kings, it's about a kid who kidnaps a mafia don. Basically, it makes me think about being in too deep before you realize it, being just a boy messing around with things that can kill you, and when you're famous, you mess around with things that can kill you every day, and most of them you can snort or shoot up.

Our Lady Peace – Stealing Babies Lyrics 23 years ago
Has anyone ever heard of the legend of eve and lilith? the story (written well after either testament, and no I'm not a christian but I'm fascinated by the stories) goes like this. Lilith was adam's original wife, formed out of mud and clay at the same time as him. But she was his equal in many ways and adam didn't like it. I'm not exactly sure what happens next, but she gets banished from eden and becomes a demon. Then god decides to make a more subservient companion out of adam's rib: eve. Lilith keep stealing eve's babies though, and raising them as her own, and they become demons. I'm not exactly sure where all this leads, but it's interesting to know a possible background.

Marilyn Manson – Coma White Lyrics 23 years ago
This song has always had an obvious meaning to ME, though you may not share it. A great deal of manson's songs are about our society and how it turns us into inhuman shells. And that's exactly what this song is about. People want to live in a "perfect world" that just isn't possible, but they reject anyone who doesn't suit their standards. After they put them on antidepressants to cheer them up and make them act "happy." But that doesn't work because it's not one person who's sick, it's the world that's sick. The girl is the product of that sick world, thrown away by society because even her prozac didn't do jack shit. Listen to NIN's "Fragile." I think it's a very similar song. And I'm usually such a happy camper. Damn, manson brings out the best in me.

Marilyn Manson – The Last Day On Earth Lyrics 23 years ago
this is a song that makes you think "if you knew the world was ending tomorrow, who would you want to spend today with?." If you die with someone you never have to say goodbye to them, never wonder when you'll see them again. Everything over in an instant.

Local H – Hands On The Bible Lyrics 23 years ago
hmm, well hands on the bible suggests testifying. Again, I go with the abortion theory. Except it seems like the criticism is not towards the person having the abortion, but towards all those who judge her for it ("god holds you liable for what you're done" has a distinctly sardonic tone)
The idea is generally that if you get pregnant, you have to face some sort of consequence, but society judges you for keeping it and for having an abortion even more. Perhaps the message is: USE PROTECTION!

A Perfect Circle – Magdalena Lyrics 23 years ago
IC_assasain I think is on the right track, or at least I agree with that to a great extent. But I would take it further. I would take it to the level of an actual woman, a goddess and a "slut" at the same time, someone with enough personal power to make even maynard lose control over his desire (no not literally, just meaning that he has no choice of whether he wants her or not. Imagine, someone stronger than maynard? Could it be?)
Someone, representing the female divinity, that he wants so much that he would give everything. This goes along with the tori amos obsession with mary magdalene. Also, there's an entirely different story behind the black madonna, one that I won't get into, but suffice it to say that mary magdalene was not neccesarily a whore, but that generally any woman in the bible in touch with her sexuality, or who had sex outside of marriage, was considered a whore.....

Nine Inch Nails – Please Lyrics 23 years ago
Hmm, this song has a very personal meaning to me, but a hard one to explain....more along the lines of the perfect drug/fight club explanation. In that time when everything just goes down.....you know, when it hits you that your car just crashed, or you just got dumped, usually most people start crying or feel sad. But a few of us, like me.....well I go into a state of the "other" taking over, of time slowing down and something trying to force it's way into me, asking to be a part of me, something very evil, but it feels so GOOD and it's the only thing that can save you and the only thing you can feel at all.
Damn I'm crazy. Keep in mind that trent is crazy too though, so I have a good chance of figuring this shit out.

Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile Lyrics 23 years ago
I think it is as much about trent's weakness as about his object of affection. Neither of them are normal. I know too many people like that. Fragile, waiting to be loved. So, he wants to create a bubble where they can finally be in a place of nothing but love, a wall to keep them all on the other side, in their own little world. But that never works does it? pity. trying to fix a kindred soul is the hardest thing you can do, but generally only said kindred soul can fix another. It's the journey of the wounded healer folks.

Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics 23 years ago
hmm.....from personal experience with someone like this....my understanding is someone very weak but very strong, someone who has been beaten down so many times that they lose their humanity and become reptilian, but one (trent in this case) can still love her in an odd way, a consuming way. It ties in with the idea of the sacred whore, the magdalene idea, except it is more of a corrupted version of such, as are most NIN songs....songs of beauty lost.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 23 years ago
Well let's start out with saturn. Saturn in astrology represents order, rule, regulation, the system, the man. Order is a good thing when you have nothing but chaos, but too much order tends to stagnate and degenerate. I think this song is partially about our society, how everyone has a grudge. and how we all hold on to our beliefs because we need order in our lives and are afraid of change. When saturn comes back around, the choice is made between growing and learning, or dying inside, being dragged down like a stone. Perhaps our society is at that point, or has passed it and has chosen to be dragged down.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 23 years ago
This song, I believe, is an example of sacred art. Sacred art as defined by alex grey (the guy who did the cover for lateralus) Is art meant to promote direct experience of divinity in whatever form comes to you. And this song does, to me at least. I believe it is sort of a summation song of all of the spiritual journeying we go through, and perhaps the spiritual journeying maynard has gone through. As we grow as spiritual beings in a physical world, our senses begin to open up, but only if we let go (reach out to embrace the random) and don't try to control or analyze our world with our logic alone....It is about the desire to experience all it is to be human, to weep like a widow and yet stay connected to the source of all life, to spiral downwards into the material world and then upwards again into the spiritual, to be divine consciousness in a human body. And of couse to draw upon the immense energy all around us "I open wide to suck it it I feel it mvoe across my skin....."

VAST – Dirty Hole Lyrics 23 years ago
Keep in mind that many artists have a very strange view of life, the universe, and everything, so chances are if the lyrics aren't obviously about the artist's experiences, you have to dig deeper. Personally, I believe that this is about a woman who uses sex to drain her partners (you can live as long as you want to live) and to feel powerful. Then again, it may also be about the destructive female aspect, the kali thing, sex and death bundled together, closer to the whore idea, but more to do with the sacred prostitutes of babylon than your modern-day redlight girl.
