You just have to listen to the song to hear him saying capers, not papers. Plus "Tea and a toast to yesterdays papers" makes little sense if you read it. "Tea and a toast to yesterdays capers" is not meant in a literal sense. The metaphor is Breakfast in bed, basicly saying thanks for all the sex! |

This song is about being left out by the rest of his band. It has no real complete connections with Hillel dying, although the consequences could have led to this song. This was written when Anthony was completely clean of drugs, and Flea and John were having some time together smoking some pot. Anthony felt completely left out but didn't sucumb to the drugs and went for a ride on the Freeway. The song was born through some free-style poetry, and he wrote it down in his private notebook when he got back. He never actually meant it to be a song, but when his best friend was looking through his notebook, he came across this song and realised its potential. Anthony wasn't convinced that this was their style of music, but him and John sat down one night and created the chord sequence that would eventually become the song.
Hillel didn't overdose under a bridge. Like I said the song has no relation to Hillel dying, it's about Anthony's feelings. The Under the Bridge title relates to a Mexican gang terretory where Mario (Anthonys dealer at the time) pretended to be Anthonys step brother to get Anthony into what is concievably a police free zone.
It's a song about lonelyness, and strangly enough, it was about cleanness as much as being on drugs. Strange huh?
(Info gathered from Kiedi's personal memoir "Scar Tissue", buy it, its brilliant) |

This song is leading on with the big brother/matrix style theme that much of the obsolete album has created, but saying that the we can control what is happening to us, if we try. |
