Man, I have read many of your comments and they are all pretty interesting and diverse. But, I have different ideas about different parts of the lyrics. Such as: "here's your new drug shoot it in the left eye feel it on the right side" it seems he talks about how the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body... maybe he's just emphasizing the "drug that's supposed to help the heart (left eye), actually just acts upon something else, which is not the heart (right side)" "no it's not love though it sets up shop behind your ribcage building blood clots and black holes like using an axe to pull a sliver from your skin" this seems as if it were something the person is inhaling or swallowing for, thus, it is behind the ribcage also... I thought about marijuana, but some people mentioned it's not about drugs, etc., so I don't know... it could also be about surgery, trying to cure someone with stomach cancer or "stomach cancer", etc. "and they say this is medicine an overdose of oxygen a severed head as sedative to be at peace would be a sin and surely un-american i'm breaking" for me this repeats the drug inhaling bit, but opens the possibility or the eternal war issue Thrice criticizes... for me the "severed head as sedative" is clearly about killing people and thinking we're "curing" other countries; "being at peace" is the opposite of what the US is enforcing... IOW, "they think war is medicine, but it actually isn't" "here's your new blood transfusion took us all night tell us that you're all right no it's not love" seems like the war bit again, because a new nation has arrised in Iraq (tranfusion = new blood), and it wasn't a quick rise, actually is still going (took all night) "though feels like fire inside of your veins burning right beneath the wrist begging for a razor's kiss to free it from your skin" I don't really know where this could fit in.. I think the hate or rage/anger definition of the song would fit with this "lift the veil, it's not medicine and my heart fails, time and time again" could mean anything that is "a lie" |

I think this song is a romantic song because it refers to love, but I have never felt that it's a positive side of love. To me it seems as if the protagonist can't quite catch his intended lover's attention with any "skills/abilities/qualities" he possesses, so he has to resort to "pity love". It sounds as if he doesn't have enough to offer her, so he will prove his love by physically hurting himself, and expect she will love him back out of pity. As beautiful as "while you are tangled up in sleep" seems, it shows me more of a total indifference to him. "and this is my gift: is asking you to fix my ruined hands" - just pitifully and painfully sad. If you watch the video clip of "Você Pode Ir Na Janela", by the Brazilian band Gram, you'll see what I see. Well, that's my opinion. I don't think this song is about suicide... at least not about a deadly death. I think that "it looks deep enough from here" means that the person that's "looking down" is not 100% sure of what he/she is going to try, but is confident enough to do it. "The crew seems ok" is evidently someone using others, who tried this, as an example; and they don't look that bad from the protagonist's point-of-view. People smiling face down, floating in the water, with rocks wanting to break their bones, seems someone who wants to enter an addiction. I can see drug addicts smiling, looking dumber than the next, and convincing others to do it, because they look content from the experimenter's perspective. Change the name of the song to "Living Suicide"! Fits better for all hehe :-) Well, my opinion. Hope you all agree :P - Bruno - |
