I think it's losely based on the Greek tale of Hercule and Iole. In the story, Hercules took Iole as a concubine. His wife was jeaolous, so she tried to put a love spell on him; the centaur Nessus had once tried to kidnap the wife, but Hercules killed him. The dying Nessus told the wife that his blood would act as a love potion. She dipped his robes in the blood of the centaur, but instead of being a love potion it was poisnous, and made Hercules rip himself to shreds in agony. In a way, Iole was his one fatal flaw. Iolite is a crystal, and all crystals have flaws--that relates to Iole being Hercules' flaw. "Aisle of fire close to you and desire I’m half way home" Iole is being carried back to Hercules' home after her takes her as a concubine. She doesn't despise him, but has an odd sense of attraction and lust for him. "The worst stings in life have left me numb Please don’t leave this disaster The hummingbird as my imposter " In the course of taking Iole, Hercules killed her brother and father--she is numb from these tragedies. She feels so small and detached, as if some small being is left in the place where she was. "Aching sighs To the words and the writing I’m blind " She is depressed, and can find no condolences in writings or the words Hercules is trying to persuade her with. "Ghosts run in my angels eyes Sing words so soft from my mind Believe the eyes of iolite" Iole was said to have violet eyes (Iole means violet and Greek), hence the name Iolite for the mineral, because it is a purplish colour. "Believe the eyes of Iolite" almost sounds as if Iole had precogntion of what tragedy would befll, like Cassandra (another women taken as a concubine). "'Tell you why I won’t cry Tempted by life Want this strife I suppose Tell you know I was light, Iolite'" She refuses to cry for the pains she's endured because she feels that in a way she deserves them. Hercules originally kidnaps Iole because her father promised her to him for doing a deed, but after learning that he killed his first wife and children, refused. She feels that the death of her family is her fault. O.K., that's my interpretation. It would be good to see some other people rooting for this band--they are so awesome. The vocals send chills down my back. |

| A Perfect Circle – Orestes Lyrics | 21 years ago |

"A metaphor for a missing moment" It represents the unarticulable emotions associated with giving birth. "Pull me in to your perfet circle" He's being pushed out of the womb through her vagina--her "perfect circle" "one womb.." As a feotus, he shares a womb with his mother "..one chain..." linked by the umbilical cord, which is a metaphorical chain "...one resolve..." his life depends on his mother's life "liberate this will to release us all" His mother is overbearing, and he is still metaphorically attached to her, hence the "release us all" It could also relate to the allusion of Orestes, who was fated to kill his mother, so that the "release us all comment" meant to release them both from the fate. In this their fate seems to be a seemingly endless cycle of hostility. "Gotta Cut away, clear away Slip away and sever this Umbilical residue Keeping me from killing you And from pulling you down with me here I can almost hear you scream " He's trying to get away from the power his mother exerts over his life. To do that, he has to confront her as just another person, and not his mother. He in effect must "snip away the umbilical residue" that keeps him from throwing her off his back. "One more medicated peaceful moment Give me one more medicated peaceful moment And I don't wanna feel this overwhelming hostility I don't wanna feel this overwhelming hostility " Many newborns are lethargic because the meds they give mothers can filter into the bloodstream of the baby. He asked for one more medicated, peaceful moment, like when he was first born and he didn't have problems with his mother. |
