Blink-182 – Give Me One Good Reason Lyrics 20 years ago
Meh, it's no biggie. I get more than my fair share of shit anyways, for being a punk that listens to more than JUST punk.

I thnk most people associate punk with the 80's because that was when it really started to hit it B-I-G in America. The Sex Pistols--one of the most widely-known bands--might have been no more, but it was in the 80's that punks started to be highly visible on the common street's of America. Right or wrong, America is the biggest media outlet in the world, and when something hit's it huge here it tend's to stick in the mind for some reason.

As far as punk bands go, I'm actually a big fan of both of those bands--the Sex Pistols AND the Ramones. While obviously not everything they claimed to be, the music itself became--in my opnion--something more that it was originally intended to be. Despite all I've learned in my research, song's like "Anarchy in the UK" still get my blood pumping. And when you get right down to it, isn't that the most importatnt thing about it?

The music doesn't REALLY matter all that much. The behind-the-scenes realities of who and what the Sex Pistols or the Ramones really were are also, ultimatly, unimportant in my mind.

I'm a punk--or at least I like to think I am--and there's one thing about the modern punk scene that really pisses me off. More than posers, more than the mainstream backlash, more than ANYTHING. It's the MESSAGE inherant in all those old punk songs that matters, in more way's than one, and it's that message that I really miss. I'm only 21 years old, but I can tell just from reading and looking things up that punk's back then felt like they *stood* for something. They were pissed off, and DEMANDING that things change. When you compare that sense of justice long overdue with the modern crop of pathetic pop-punk crap, I persoanlly feel that my generation got the shit end of the stick.

I'm not saying that Blink 182 or Green Day or even Good Charlotte don't make good music--they do. I have Good Charlottes entire album on my computer, both of them in fact, and I enjoy listening to 'em. But do they effect me at as deep a level as old-skool punks?

No. No, they don't. And that kind of pisses me off. Actually, FUCK the kinda. It pisses me off in a BIG way.

Blink-182 – Give Me One Good Reason Lyrics 20 years ago
Hey, I used the Sex Pistols and the Ramones because those are the two groups that people on THIS site are most likely to recognize. The general perception--correct or not--is that the Ramones and the Sex Pistols were the first punk rock bands.

Like I said, punk-rock started in the '70's. When people think Sex Pistols and Ramones, they think of the early 80's. That alone should tell you I know more than I let on. Also, there's limited space and I didn't want to take make a bigger essay than I had to..

And callmemichale--yeah, there was a time when being punk meant an honest desire for social change. But, hey--I guess singing song's about skipping school and hating your parents is punk enough, right? *sighs*

Blink-182 – Give Me One Good Reason Lyrics 20 years ago
Okay, let me correct you on some things, reckless_suburbia. Punk is not just a type of music. If you think so, you obviously don't know much about the subject. This is not entirely your fault; you're obviously very, very stupid, and that can't be helped.

Punk-rock started in the late 70's, growing out of a mindset and type of personality. The music of early punk bands like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones grew out of a desire to express what they thought and felt; mostly it was about getting fucked up and fucking shit up, with a healthy dose of contempt for the stodgy, corrupt "elder generation" thrown in. They created out of scratch the music that came to be called "punk". They sang about anarchy, corruption, the falsity of believing in a materialistic culture, and a desire to be unique and different. They were PUNKS--who just happend to make punk-rock.

Punk rock is MORE than just music; the music itself is--or at least WAS--just a reflection of what they themselves were. When somebody call's themselves a "punk", they are talking about a set of values and beliefs. That is quite different from when somebody calles themselves a "punk rocker". The two are inter-related but seperate entities. I know a lot of "punks" who listen to punk rock, metal, rap, and various other forms of music--but that doesn't change that they are, in fact, punks.

I also know a fair number of people who listen to punk rock because they enjoy the music and nothing else; they are not, themselves, punks--and most don't claim to be so.

So the next time you try to claim that somebody cannot be a punk because you cannot be a type of music, remember which one came first. It wasn't the music--it was the punks.

The message may seem sick to you, but it's a very real problem that many people need to deal with. I know that things like this, Adam's Song from Blink 182, and Wrong With Me from Twiztid all helped me to deal with a very difficult time in my life.

Corporate Avenger – voting doesn't work Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow. Those are some fucked-up and incredibly wrong lyrics you got there.

First off, the thid line should be "I won't pledge allegiance to hypocrosy, your democracy is not for me..."

And it should be "TRIBAL society", not "travel". I mean, that doesn't even make any sense.

And it's "Cancer patiens....smoke WEED. People voted to be FREE. But the facist rule DECREED, pig's arresting you and ME."

Then, in the second verse...."One say's this, one say's that, sound's the same what choice is that?"

Third verse, "Voting doesn't work, I have seen, along with piles of broken treaties. Your reality produces poverty, spirutally in a nation of greed." And it should be "Think votes count? Well, I THINK NOT!"

Also, "Wel your vote counts, 1 2 3, living in democracy. Everybody here is free, except for you and except for me."

And the chorus is "Voting doesn't work. Why? When they don't like what we say, they stop it in the courts."

But, yeah...the song itself does kick a lot of ass. I encourage people to listen to it loudly near political rallies.

Eminem – Drug Ballad Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song. It describes the entire lifestyle of a drug user better than any other song I've ever heard, in my entire life. The attitude, the event's described, they are all DEAD ON. It's polished but honest, not pulling any punches despite it's high style content. Very well done.

Eminem – Kim Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is a murder fantasy, make no mistakes on that. It has no meaning beyond a sound-by-sound account of Eminem MURDERING Kim. However, the key word is "fantasy". This song is not going to make anybody abuse there wife. That's a fucked up thought; it's basically saying that Eminem control's what people do, and it's not true.

Anybody who commit's an act of violence--whether it's shooting up a school or murdering the wife--was obviously a sick, fucked-up person to begin with, and no music will change that. I listen to Eminem and NWA and various death-metal bands, but I've never killed anybody because of it.

It's just music. Get over yourselves and start putting the blame where it belongs; own up to the responsibility instead of putting on innocent people who are just putting words to a beat. It's not his fault; it's the fault of whoever commit's crimes.

And Verity--the point of his saying that was not to exonerate himself for his age at the time, but to indicate that it was wrong for Kim to use that as an excuse when it happend OVER HALF A DECADE ago (at the time of the song, well over a decade ago now) and they had both claimed it was over and no longer a concern.
