| Rihanna – Stay Lyrics

I feel like this song could be a direct commentary on Rihanna's relationship with Chris Brown. She's stuck in an abusive relationship but she's so co-dependent upon him that she can't disentangle herself. She knows that she shouldn't be in it but without him, there's a hole that can't be filled. And she realizes that although he's the one who's effed up, he seems fine with it and she's the only one struggling to be happy/healthy. I think this is beautiful song and very profound for her. I also love Mikky Ekko's voice. |

| Joshua Radin – Star Mile Lyrics

I totally agree with dresdendoll. I think the song is about a guy who has found fame and is now living the lifestyle of the rich and famous. He's big in Hollywood, cruising the 'star mile" with some famous starlett who is 'feeding his pride' by being seen with him and who is ONLY dating him because of fame ('all the gold dust in her eyes'). Thus begins another Hollywood coupling as fodder for the tabloids -- something that is just superficial and will never amount to marriage ('won't reform into a ring'). But he can't let go of the memory of a previous girl who knew him before he was famous and who loved him for who he truly is. He probably left her/gave her up to pursue his career or once his career started to take off and he needed to be seen with more famous people. But he now realizes how hollow the Hollywood life is and how the life he's chosen will utlimately turn him to stone. Such a beautiful song and sadly, not an uncommon phenomenon out here in LA LA Land.... |

| Ozzy Osbourne – So Tired Lyrics

I always thought this song was about Ozzy being in a relationship with a married woman -- he is the 'other man'. And that he has been waiting for her to leave her husband but she never will. And he's tired of wasting his time on her so he's ending it. Such a beautiful song from such an unexpected source. |

| XTC – The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead Lyrics

XTC has said that this song is about John F. Kennedy and is indeed likening him to Jesus. That JFK could have been a modern day savior but was too successful in appealing to and uniting the public which posed a threat to the political parties and would have diminished their power. It also supports/ties in with the conspiracy theories surrounding his assassination. Brilliant song. |

I've loved this song since I was little because it seemed so profound even then. I heard on one of those VH1 music programs that Terry Jacks wrote this song to eulogize a friend of his who died in the Vietnam War. So sad! |

All excellent explanations! I've always loved this song and felt he was talking about how society (and maybe in particular America) conditions its individuals into being automatons who don't venture outside the "acceptable" boundaries placed upon them. He, himself, is probably labeled a fanatic or criminal for not sticking within those guidelines and "..at night, when all the world's asleep" he grapples with those issues. I guess basically just a reiteration of what everyone above has said. LOVE this song, though. |

| Tori Amos – 1,000 Oceans Lyrics

I've always pictured this song to be about a mother singing to her child whom she's lost to sickness or disease. The child was suffering while alive and the mother didn't want him to be stuck in a diseased body (to "keep (him) from flying") so she had to accept letting him go so his spirit could be free or "sail home". And since he's past on, she's been so distraught ("cried 1000 oceans") and felt so lost ("in the darkness") that she's decided to reunite with him by killing herself. Even though she knows it's wrong she can't bare to be separated from him any longer ("I'm aware what the rules are but you know that I will run, you know that I will follow you"). Depressing I know but it's such a heartbreakingly beautiful song that it makes me go to epic proportions. :0) |

I never knew the backstory behind this song so I always thought it was about a guy who's brother had died (Daniel). I always found the part "Your eyes have died but you see more than I' particularly meaningful in that aspect. |

I have always loved this song and I agree, I think it captures the intensity and emotion of a breakup. I also love that he realizes he's made a mistake by breaking up with the other person because it feeds into that fantasy we've all had when someone has broken up with us and we want them to realize they still want us. | Jet – Look What You've Done Lyrics

When I first heard this song, I'd just broken up with someone with whom I'd try to make a relationship work for a year and half, so it really reminded me of him. I felt like the song was saying, "Look how much I've given, and I thought we were at a point where you could appreciate it, but you're still pissing it away," so that aspect really rang true to me. Since then, I've come to feel that perhaps the song is about someone in a bad situation (addicted to drugs or in an abusive relationship or something) and the singer (and probably others in the subject's life) has continually tried to be supportive and prevent them from continuing their self-destructive ways, but to no avail. And the singer is finally fed-up and not going to be there for the person any longer. Either way, I think it's a beautiful song and I like the fact that it musically alludes to the Beatles. Really, today, any band has musical references and influences from previous ones. |

This has been one of my favorite songs for 20 years! I agree, it IS haunting. I remember hearing some statistic that said out of all the teenage suicides in Europe in the 80's (once this song was released) it was the most common song in their musical reportoire. HOW they got that statistic I don't know, and it very well could have been bunk, but I find it interesting nonetheless. |

| Keane – Bend and Break Lyrics

Hmmm...I think Jingy has an interesting take on this song that didn't occur to me. Anyhoo, I've always interpreted this song as being about falling in love and the hardships that come with it. I think, “If only I don’t bend and break” refers to him trying not to freak out or sabotage himself/the relationship, so he can fall in love with her, or “meet on the other side, meet in the light.” “Meet me in the morning when you wake up” is asking that she do the same (not sabotage) and allow herself to fall in love as well, “morning” symbolizing a new life begun together once they’re in love.. |

| Keane – This Is the Last Time Lyrics

I think this song is about him being in a long-term relationship where he cares about her very much, but he doesn't love her anymore. He's probably lied to himself for a long time and tried to talk himself into being in love with her again ("Say that some things never die, Well I tried and I tried") but it's finally come to him needing to get out. And because he cares about her, he'll be there for her through the breakup but he can't stay in the relationship anymore. |
