| P.O.D. – Sounds Like War Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Although the song is by no means amongst the best on the album, i still think it has a certain amount of quality, and I rather enjoy it. I'm not overly sure on the John Doe part, the song, to me, is about the war we are fighting inside of ourselves, the spiritual war against our own sin. Perhaps John Doe is a reference to the film Se7en were John Doe was a mass murderer, killing people in accordance to there 'sin'. |

| The Goo Goo Dolls – Only One Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I'd never reall thought about it, but it would make sense to be about Kurt Cobain though. I guess there are probably others like him. Scizophrenic "talking to myself again". Deadhead? "its been dead for years". Smoking dope, suicide. Don't get me wrong, Kurt Cobain and others like him, have been great musicians. But he had a bit of a messed up life. | |
| The Goo Goo Dolls – Eyes Wide Open Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Goo goo dolls songs are often metaphors, although it maybe about the rich kid. To me its about the "club 18" gernation. That may be a bit of a european term. It's this generations 18-25's. Many are lost in a pool of alcohol, drugs and empty sex. Many don't work, or if they do they dont have good jobs, simply because of messing around at school. Drains on society, perhaps. Again this is just my interpretation. | |
| The Goo Goo Dolls – Impersonality Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| To me, this song, like others on this album, is political. Impersonality, I dont know if it's a word, but to me it suggests lacking in a personality. Such as a drone, moulded by society. People who conform loose there character, by acting like everyone else. When you are kid you are very individual, "When I was three feet tall." And you could act like a goon and nobody cared. Infact everyone thought it was cute. The character in the song, had decided to reamin an individual, perhaps after being an "impersonality". Maybe not correct, just my interpretation. | |
| The Mars Volta – Son et Lumière Lyrics | 21 years ago |

The translation for Son et Lumier, “Sound and light”, appears in the album sleeve. Unfortunately it is credited to ‘anonymous’. This is slightly a slightly annoying end to our research on the first song. However we have accomplished a lot. Who was Julio Venegas? On the first page of the album sleeve, we find the dedication, “Inspired by the life and times of Julios Venegas.” We have already discovered that this album is about him, his suicide attempt, following coma, and his eventual suicide. But who exactly is he? He is a little known artist from El Paso, Texas, who was friends with members of the band, ‘At The Drive In’, from which Mars Volta is now formed. Cedric is quoted as saying, “Towards the end, he had acquired a really bad limp from being in a coma. He had tons of scars all over his body, and some of his closer friends used to call him Frankenstein. He had big cut marks on his throat, welts and bruises and bumps, and his arm had been shrivelled up from shooting up rat poison. He acquired so many scars it was like a walking map.” Julio committed suicide whilst the band was practicing, and Cedric was inspired to write a song about him, ‘Embroglio’, which we will look at shortly. Later on he decided that an entire album would be necessary to remember Julio. The album is based loosely on the story Julio, with a few changes. The name of the hero is Cerpin Taxt, who shoots up his mother’s morphine, instead of rat poison. |

The mysteries of Mars Volta. What does Mars Volta mean? This is the obvious starting point in unravelling the mysteries of this band. In my search I stumbled across a forum that presented two quotes from interviews with members of the band, offering two slightly different explanations. “The 'Volta' is taken from a (Federico) Fellini book about his films, what he characterises as a changing of scene, a new scene to him is called 'Volta'. Y'know, changing of time and the changeover. And 'Mars', we're just fascinated by science fiction so' and it's something that ultimately looked' as in anything I write, it's meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would.”- Sedric "The word "Volta" I found in a book on Federico Fellini, that's a word that he just kept using. I just thought it was an interesting word. It means a turn around in music, it means the other side, it's a river, it's the sixth line in a sonnet where the writer contradicts himself. And Mars comes from Greek mythology, the god of war."- Omar. The planet mars is obviously named after the Roman god of war, and the two stories back up. It leaves us still with one question, which is, who is Federico Fellini? Who is Federico Fellini? Federico Fellini was an Italian director/writer in the 20th Century. Born in 1920 he grew up in a country initially dominated by Mussolini and Pope Pius XII. Fellini started recording his dreams in notebooks during the 60’s and they inspired his films. His films were numerous and in 1964 he won an Oscar for “Best Foreign Film”, to which he responded "In the myth of the cinema, Oscar is the supreme prize." Deloused In The Comatorium. An album, a fantastic album, which follows the journey of ‘Cerpin Taxt’ as he finds himself in a coma. This has obvious links with the dream inspired films of Fellini, coma fantasies, and this is what the album would appear to be about, indeed it does explain the title, or would seem too. The ‘Cerpin Taxt’ of the album would appear to be one ‘Julios Venegas’, a friend of the band, more about him later. Deloused: Verb: to free someone of lice. This may not necessarily mean physical lice, but lice of the mind, perhaps being in the comatorium helped the individual to solve some problems, think some things through. Comatorium: This word does not appear in the dictionary, but seems to be the location were someone would be in a coma, or perhaps the world inspired by his dream. I will now look at the songs one by one in an effort to comprehend Cerpin Taxt’s journey in its entirety. Son et Lumier (Sound and Light). “Clip side of the pinkeye flight (1) I'm not the percent you think survives (2) I need sanctuary in the pages of this book (3) Gestating with all the other rats (4) Nurse said that my skin will need a graft (5) I am of pockmarked shapes (6) The vermin you need to loathe (7)” It may help to know that the song was originally combined with Inertiatic, but the songs were separated, simply to increase the amount of tracks on the album. This song would be the first of three ‘factual’ songs on the album, the others being Inertiatic and Televators. Julios’ first suicide attempt took place when he tried to overdose himself on rat poison, not his Mothers morphine, as some will tell you. ‘Pink eye’, supposedly when an individual shoots himself up with a drug his eyes will go bloodshot afterwards, and a tell-tale sign of a heroin addict is a pinkness in there eyes. Line 2 is a clear indication of his intentions to kill himself; the individual doesn’t want to live anymore. Line 3, this is a grey area, I, personally interpret it as referring to Fellini’s books on dreams, where the word Volta originates from, and perhaps now that he cannot die, he will find rest, and a chance to asses his situation in his coma dreams. Line 4 is often believed to be because of the rat poison, but as this is not the case it is perhaps due to his surroundings when he attempts suicide, maybe he was with drug addicts, I do not know, and information on such has proved hard to come by for me. Line 5, maybe a reference to the scars on his arm, described on the Mars Volta site, and how he will require surgery to repair the damage. A skin graft is when either the patient’s skin, or prosthetic skin is used to repair the damage. Line 6 may be a reference to the scars, the ‘marked’ specifically. Line 7 may be a reference to the drug addicts he is surrounded with, or maybe a reference to himself, please don’t hate me for this. The title, means “Sound and Light” and may be a reference to the beginning of these fantasies that appear in later songs. We must remember at this point he isn’t in the coma, and perhaps this is in reference to his guilt and such. |

| Dead Poetic – Modern Morbid Prophecies Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I disagree, not to discredit your opinion, but to me this song means something different. "Biting on these bitter tasting pills" does not need to mean drugs. We have a saying "taking the bitter pill", is when you have to face something that is hard to face up to. You perhaps have to see that something you are doing is wrong, perhaps this wrong thing has caused the complications described in the first verse. Not having time to fix his eyes on the relationship, and wanting things to be simple again. Perhaps. The second verse is perhaps his desire to reaffirm his relationship, with God perhaps. Dead Poetic are a christian band. He wants to cast aside worldly things and focus on God, "your voice devoid of the constant noise". The last bit, "dont make me choose" shows there is a clear choice, life and death, and you just have to choose God- life. | |

| Sixpence None the Richer – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics | 21 years ago |

a song about God, perhaps. Sixpence none the richer are a Christian band, I believe the song was originally done by crowded house, who I think also had Christian leanings. Freedom is provided by God, freedom inside, but Christianity may restrict you from doing something else, denying freedom without, in theory. Deluge in a paper cup, perhaps this is referring to when the samaritan woman said to Jesus, "even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the masters table." The next bit im not sure on, perhaps it is about the state of the world, battles. The last line of the first verse is still a mystery to me. Chorus, just cos u make a mistake and walk with the world dont mean ur relationship with God is over, the enemy will try to set up a wall between us anf God, but we musn't let him suceed. I agree with linara about the next verse. After this we step out and march on with God, towards his heart for us, what he desires for us, and the liberation and relief provided by it. Maybe wrong, just my ideas. |

| The Goo Goo Dolls – Slide Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| as far as i can see it is about a catholic girl ("the priest is on the phone") who had an abortion ("dont u love the life u killed") and whos parents were angry ("your father hit the wall, your ma disowned u") and how the singer feels bad for her and wants to make it better ("could you whisper in my ear the things you wanna feel"), maybe the singer is the father ("oh, May, do you wanna get married, or run away"), May being the girl in question. Not sure if this is right, just my opinion. | |

Firstly, this is an amazing band and an amazing song. The song, to me, is about how self harm, and the alternatives to it. Verse 1: Everytime the individual goes to God after hurting themselves its like the first time all over again. This song reflects this and claims "This time it does all change". The individuals decision to wear his heart on his sleeve, and being tired of not bleeding, talks about the relationship with God, to go forward and demonstrate his faith on God and be willing to go through suffering for it, instead of harming onself (excuse my choosing to refer to the individual as he). The use of the words bleed and sleave also have the references to the self harming. Chorus: The open arm is not just the open arms of God, or a loved one, but the open arms we give ourselves, the harming. Harming is often an escape, and the open arms of a loved one are an alternative for of escape from ones issues. It's a shame to curl up away from God, curling up is also common amongst self harm victims, and often in dark rooms. The same old word giving the spark could possibly be a reference to God (in the beggining was the word... the word was God). I dont know, maybe. Verse 2: Individual falls, big mistake, the harming, and falls right into the hands of God, it is often in our lowest place that we find God's touch the most powerful. Bridge: Washing ones wounds helps them to heal, gets rid of infections etc. This also refers to the mental wounds and how the hope of a better future (in God) can help us to advance and move on from our past. The same old word making me run to cover to your heart, is the individuals proclomation that he will return to God, run back to Him. I dont really know, these are my suggestions and comments on what the song means to me, Thank you. |
