Jenny Lewis – Rise Up with Fists!!! Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the line "Having crushed all the pretty things." That entire stanza, I feel like it can function on a couple of levels.

"Wake up behind the bar" could reference jail, or drinking, or as sort of an off-kilter idiom for not keeping up with the joneses.

"Having crushed all the pretty things," then, could be literal--as the crime committed if "behind the bar" is a jail reference, and whether or not it is even that makes me think of how people sometimes destroy valuable things when they themselves feel worthless. It could be crushing the hearts of pretty girls at a bar. But I think that the idea of crushing what's beautiful (and the idea of destroying valuable things when you feel worthless) runs throughout the song in a bigger sense--when we try to look younger and prettier with plastic surgery, when we cheat to feel more exciting and escape our lives at 45, when we try to change things that should not be changed.

And being in this trapped mindset of thinking you should be one way and thinking you have a certain control when you don't is just like being on house arrest, where you think you have a little more freedom than jail but you really just have more comfort and external temptation. House arrest also brings to mind the idea of making a prison of one's own world/self.

Just my take. Did anyone else read it similarly?

Well this might seem a little off the wall, but my first guess was that he's singing as a porn director, the girl one of his "actresses," and that they were just using each other for their own motives.

Aww...it's like a forest love tale.
Quite a swell song. I love how Eisley can do that, make a song about forest folks in love. Not just another love song. And that reminds me of Cursive's "Driftwood" too.

I'm not sure about the boa part, but it does make me want to go frolick in the street at night with some perfect lover.

This song always reminds me of Mr. Rogers so, to me, it's about leaving childhood and having to face the ugly, unfantastical world and wanting to go back.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's "star," not "scar."
I agree that it may be from a parent's perspective. I don't really think that the child necessarily turned out "bad," though. I definitely think the parent feels inadequate, like s/he didn't do enough for the child, or just in awe. But the parent could be someone proud of her/his child's success, or the child might be growing up and starting college or starting a family or somthing.

Weezer – Buddy Holly Lyrics 21 years ago
To Grishnav:
I don't think the shoe line has to be that deep. My gosh, it's Weezer. I think it's just one of those stupid things, not meaning just a random line, I mean it's one of those stupid things that happens to people when you just have as grim of luck as the person in the song does.
"What's a matter babe are you feelin' sick?
what's a matter, what's a matter, what's a matter you?
What's a matter babe, are you feelin' blue? oh-oh!"
--sick could be hit by a bullet, or perhaps otherwise injured by the intruders. perhaps it's simply a physical reaction to the strong emotions brought by that type of crime."
I didn't really get physical out of that at all until you made me think about it. When people are stressed out or blue, they just look grim and beat up and sick. I never even imagined the bullet part, myself. But "sick" could be a sick leading to death, and to me, it was suicide.
I'm going to add, I think there's a lot of mockery in this song. "What's with these homies dissin' my girl?" The ending is a bit uncharacteristic, and WASD an annoying common in music at the time.

This is probably way off, but I think this song is about the decay of our lifestyles and taking things for granted. People wanting and wanting even though they already have enough, people being self-centered and forgetting about their families, families and communities breaking up in general.

Weezer – Undone - The Sweater Song Lyrics 21 years ago
Someone else's theory from another site was that this song was about two friends and the girl wants to go much farther than the guy does. That made sense to me...
At first I thought it was about...let's call it the Sticks and Stones feeling. Let's say you're a good kid with good intentions but you're mighty fragile. So the token bully wants to ruin you, destroy you and your sweater and tear you up and make you run in cry. But you just act like you don't give a crap (because you're so drunk, or so jaded), even though it's beating you up, like nobody wants to see.

"The feeling you get when the train stops and the little guy comes knocking on your door. It was supposed to be a sad song, but everyone thinks it's hilarious."
Anyone wanna tell me what THAT means? (I'm so dense!)

Whoa, this song is apparently a hit or miss, especially for the Weezer fans. I didn't know it was Weezer the first time I heard it, but it's one of my favorites of theirs. It's so crazy.
