@[Nexus7:4175] Back in the early 80s, wasn't it all about Japan, though? Or at least it was about Japan for the electronics, while it was all about China for cheap consumer goods like plastic toys. Although Martin did say they got the inspiration for this song while they were on tour in Asia, so who knows what they saw in Korea in 1983? |

@[Bistoo:4068] He does use a lot of spiritual references in later songs (particularly on SoFaD), but I doubt it's explicitly Christian - particularly given both the lyrics to and the background of Blasphemous Rumours. |

@[Fortunatus:3706] Interesting thought on the three exhortations. What if we take it a step further? What if it's like this - if you're completely on your own, fighting the devil, then he wins every time. But once we band together - you "form a circle" by "being a world child" and connecting with those of diverse experiences and perspectives, which you can only do if you "immerse yourself in love"? That seems to give the song more hope for me. :-)
That seems to make particular sense when you consider the urgency of the phrasing "Be a world child; form a circle/Before we all go under" |

@[TheBaron:3477] I heard that they deliberately chose "You hate" for the English version because the German version so clearly uses "Du hast" and not "Du hasst" to intentionally muddy the waters. |

It sounds to me like "Enjoy the Silence" and "Policy of Truth" are two sides of the same coin. "Enjoy the Silence" is about the positive consequences of withholding harmful information, while "Policy of Truth" is about the negative consequences of disclosing said information. |

I think it's interesting all the comments who specifically attribute this song to being about being gay. While I agree with the comments about telling the truth only when necessary and with deception sometimes being better, but if anything, the music and the lyrics seem to suggest to me that the narrator is some guy from the mafia giving a personal warning to an FBI snitch. Or a corporate executive warning a potential whistleblower ;-) |

@[moyica:3383] It's basically God taking what each of them wanted and then doing exactly the opposite. God gives you exactly what you _don't_ want. |

I'm a faithful Mormon, and I actually love this song. It actually bolstered my belief in God more than any Christian hymn has done. How did it do that? It actually humanized God for me. Made him someone who I could actually be angry with the same way I could be with any other person.
How many Christian religions teach that God is our father, and even go so far as to compare one's relationship with their earthly father to their Heavenly Father, and yet expect us not to have that human dimension to that relationship? If our relationship with God is that of a child to his or her father, then of course, it is natural to be angry with him sometimes just as children are angry with their parents. Quite frankly, I think it would make God an even _worse_ father to have such a heavy expectation that we _not_ be angry with him. |

@[Sozluk:3382] I agree, Alan had a profound impact on the musical process of Depeche Mode, and he may have inspired this song (although I'd be surprised, given that there are other songs that are attributed to him, and this isn't one of them). But as far as your last statement, it was actually the process of recording SOFAD that drove him to departure, not the spiritual themes on the album.
If you want to learn more about why he left, Google "We Were Going to Live Together, Record Together And It Was Going to Be Wonderful." Very insightful. :-) |

I'm going to take a different take on this song from everyone else, and say what it means to _me_. :-)
I just recently entered into an international relationship with a girl from the Ukraine. We've only emailed and talked on the phone-our first in person meeting will be this February in Kiev.
When I've told people about this relationship and the fact that our first meeting in Kiev will be in February, one of the things that people have said is, "It will be so cold there!" But then I listened to this song on my commute to work this morning, and heard the lines, "Now winter dances here/It seems so fitting don't you think/to dress the ground in white and grey" and it brought such a smile to my face. :-)
For me, the rest of the song just romanticizes our love and all the obstacles we confront to make this relationship work. The second verse reflects on all the time I've missed her before we can finally meet, and then the remainder of the song serves as a symbol of strength in unity and love. :-)
The lines "My beloved, do you know/when the warm wind comes again/another year will start to pass" is an admonition to not wait for fairer times, as the times will just pass you by and will be gone forever. The second part of that verse, "Please don't ask me why I'm here/Something deeper brought me that I need to remember"(yes, I misheard it, but I like my version better. ;-) ) reminds me of my own responsibility to generate the relationship.
Even though the next verse takes place in the past, for me it's less about remembering something that once was and can never be again, and more about remembering the past like, "Let's do that again, shall we?"
I know, this is completely different from everyone else's interpretation, but hey, I hope you enjoyed my version as much as I did. :-) |

For a long time, I didn't like this song, not because of the lyrics or the subject matter, but because I didn't feel Cristina and Andrea's performance on the album version adequately captured the animosity that this song represents. But when they did it live on the Unleashed Memories tour, they were singing to each other, and they were really getting into their characters, and _that_ version of the song rocked. :-) |

In the verses, it sounds like a loved one is dying, and the speaker is just putting on a strong facade and numbing the pain. In the B section, they describe the futility of resisting death(or resisting something-what is 'desire that you cannot mention?') But then again, in the C section, they still insist on defying the odds. Not just to live, but to thrive. To reach for the sky and to fly.
Maybe it's not necessarily about a literal death, but a difference of direction that pulls two people in opposite directions, although one of them wants to keep the other with them, instead of letting them go. |

It seems like the person being spoken to is in a difficult spot, and the speaker is telling him to explore things in a more philosophical manner-something he has become very skilled at. Yet he can't really transmit to him the process, as much as he wants to. But he still acknowledges the importance of doing so. |
