crazydrunkendude, you know what this website is for right? interpreting lyrics....as you see them, so it's ok for people to attempt to put into words what they think the song means and you're right, no matter what a person thinks about a song, it is personal. Maynard only cares that his lyrics make you think about anything, let alone what the topic could or couldn't be. oh and to reply to those who think that Maynard doesn't respect you and shouldn't... get a better handle on your self-esteem Just because he turned his back to the crowd doesn't mean he thinks that he should not respect the crowd, it could mean anything, but my point is that it made you use the greymatter rotting in the tomb known as your skull. I am male, but it [the song topic] had happened to me for a long time. This song puts people that have been fortunite to not have been raped, right there, so they can glimpse the horror of rape. This song got me through high school (freshman year was a two or three years after it happened to me), helped me speak up about it, and helped me through the ensueing legal poceedings. Chris Hall has lyrics that are *almost* in leauge with Maynard from Tool, except he is much more direct. IMHumbleO Awesome song and it still get me teary.... Thanks, Chris!! |

The tendancy that he and some people have to promise much, but deliver little. According to Marx "Religion is the opium of the masses", seeing it that way, sober in this instance could mean "without religion". So "Why can't we not be sober?" is a plea to rid ourselves from religion. >Why can't we drink forever. >I just want to start things over. -This and the last verse are always linked, but when they are not it brings new meaning. I have heard a cliche which goes something like "Drink the knowledge in". Using that, the voice is speaking of drinking from knowledge, forsaking the crutch of religion. >I am just a worthless liar. >I am just an imbecile. >I will only complicate you. >Trust in me and fall as well. >I will find a center in you. >I will chew it up and leave, >I will work to elevate you >just enough to bring you down. -Here he voice is speaking to, for an example _only_, a christian. He is saying from that point of view he is a worthless liar, an imbecile, etc, etc. Also it serves as a warning to christians, still using the example, as he will degrate them and chew them up. Also, it is another attempt to remind himself of the promises broken. >Trust me. -*double meaning alert* Linking this with the previous verse it is used as a warning to christians as in; "Trust me when I say I'll chew you up and spit you out.". _BUT_ on it's own, it is a plea for the sane to embrace life and forget religion, which from the moment of inception is dying. >Mother Mary won't you whisper >something but what's past and done. -See "Jesus" line above. This is the lyric that keeps my third eye trained on interpreting this song as "the voice" vs. "the church". >Trust me. -See above. >Why can't we not be sober? >I just want to start this over. -See above. >Why can't we sleep forever. >I just want to start things over. - Now for the only alternative to "with God" or "without God" that the voice sees as a good one, to sleep forever. This could mean one of three things, all opposing: 1. Sleep forever meaning "being dead", which with the hope of the lyric "Trust me" doesn't quite make sense. 2. Sleep forever meaning "being dead", and bring new hope by cleaning all the dead brains out of the mix. 3. Sleep forever meaning "dream forever", which is the only alternative left, sit in dreamstate, accomplishing nothing. >I want what I want. - to quote Issac Asimov: "I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say one was an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have.
