Interesting in that this song was originally inspired by a sort of bloddy, war-like scene in a movie the song was being written for (Rick wrote it for Zabriskie Point). They were frustrated as what the director wanted until Rick came up with this. I couldn't tell you what the whole movie was about. Definitely another "evolved" song. I recommend listening to the "old" way and see how it progressed. |

On a technical standpoint, the whole song is made up of 8 notes repeated over and over in a synth sequencer later processed with filters and other stuff. Believe it or not, the hi-hat sound is also synthesized. If you can, try n' find an early live performance of this before they had their synthesizer. It's more of a jazz guitar jam. Different, but neat to hear how this evolved. |

For you musicians out there, E6 and D6 are played over the bass line with E7 and a sus4. This whole beginning creates that dark space-like feel (B phrygian) until the E mixolydian (the theme part) is used for up-lift. I couldn't say for sure what the song was about and be 100% accurate, but I have heard of the painting theory. Classic stuff! |

One interesting aspect about this song is innovation. The first 4 seconds or so, and the later guitar solo, were all dubbed in one way, then, the tape was re-recorded backwards on the reels to reverse the cymbals and guitar parts. Obviously this would have been tricky to dub in time with the other tracks. Key thing here to remember was this was 1967. Pretty creative back then if you ask me. |

This song has such an interesting movement! Slow, then speeds back up. I'd agree that it seems this album did go overlooked (it definitely wasn't the one I first heard they did). Not really comparable to previous works of theirs in my opinion. Just "different" for lack of a better word. |

"Shucks folks I'm speechless!" Hope some of you caught that lil joke. Anyway, wow... this is truly one of David's best guitar solos. Absolute clarity!! Truly genius! How the lyrics apply to us all. |

Thanks mikemac. I knew sombody related to McCartney said that "drunk" thing at the end. Truly a classic song though. That's a hard bass lick to top! Although as alex floyd said, it is disappointing that people only like this song and "...brick in the wall." If you're a true "Floyd fan," you'd appreciate more than just those two that they did, I personally believe and know a lil trivia as myself and mikemac know (thanks again mikemac). |

Hmm I didn't notice this concept/view of this song until just now. The part that says "and I am you and what I see is me," refering later to, "and do I take you (which is actually me) by the hand..." To me, it's means more of leading your own self/destiny forward to further understanding. However, there is really no point to because there is nobody to "understand" it with if you follow. I dunno. I'm just tryin' to put "2 and 2 together." |

So true. I've also heard that somebody, I can't remember who told her several times "NO WORDS" after several attempts she made. It probably would have worked anyway but the way it ended up is WAY better than if it had any direct lyrics. |

Yes Obeof, the sax solo is amazing. As far as Paul McCartney is concerned, yes it is true to a certain extent. Waters wrote questions down on flashcards (obscure wierd questions) and went around the studio at Abbey Road asking people to give responses. McCartney was one person he questioned but I couldnt tell ya which song his comments went on. Maybe it was "I was really drunk at the time." That kinda sounds like him but who knows man. Good song nevertheless. |

Couple interesting facts on this song:
When Waters recorded the bass/ca-ching loop, the tape ended up being (so i'm told) about 50 feet long! They ended up using mic stands positioned around the studio to keep the tape tight enough while it was looped. As far as the guitar solo is concerned, Gilmour used an extended fretboard guitar to achieve the high pitch (kick ass) squeeling notes. I'd say this is one of my favorites from that album. Three different times: 7/4, 4/4, and breifly 5/4 on the "ask for a rise" line and previous verses. On radio, of course, "bullshit" is censored. This version, is appropriatle called the "bull blank" version. |

Well, pinkubus, I wouldn't say you are alone in your assumption. I enjoy playing the "second part" more than the first. Between the lap steel and the synth, it just becomes a great example of what the Floyd was all about. To "bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph." It's this that all Floyd fans do! |

I look at it this way: Clare Torry's voice on this song goes beyond a voice. It becomes the true theme of it. Sometimes it's all about getting into the groove of the song. By the way, look into a tribute Floyd band (The Australian Pink Floyd). Most tributes are no where near as good as the real thing, but they are endorsed by David Gilmour. A good concert if you get the chance. |
