Its a song about non-conformity and how society tries to make people into a conforming drone. This is particularily bad in most cities suburbs where homes are built exactly the same by the same builder, and high school is all about being part of the crowd. This song is of significance to me as a gay man who never felt part of the cliques in high school. |

| Bob Dylan – I Shall Be Released Lyrics

I see this as an anti-death penalty song. Written from the point of view of a man who is on death row and is innocent. He knows he will be released in a figurative sense when he is finally executed. |

| Sarah McLachlan – Dear God Lyrics

Ok number one, SARAH DID NOT WRITE THE SONG. Number two, people can write about things they dont agree with or believe in. In fact, I can say as an atheist I use the term gad damn it. Its not that I beleive in god, but it communicates what I want it too. Songs communicate to people. This song is an open letter saying if god is so great and good, then why is he letting all the negative things happen. If it is to "accept" him, and for eternal life AFTER death, then I suggest true beleivers could drive without seat belts, not go to a doctor, cross the street anywhere they like, because god will "protect" them, or if not at least you get to heaven. |

| Sarah McLachlan – Fear Lyrics

The album was written during her courtship/marriage. She had original misgivings of getting married and she wrote about it in "Fear", but at the end of the album she finally decides she is ready to take the next step and not fear love in "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" . The albums title is about her fumbling her way to finally find her ecstasy. SHe closes her live concerts with this song as a kind of letting people know she is getting there, but is a constant struggle. This is common to the human condition and is why Sarah speaks to me in almost every song. |

I dont think it is unusual to write about heaven or hell even if you dont believe in them. People write songs about Santa Claus too. There is the personal heaven and hell of a person in love, and the impending death of that person. Hoping that the person in so much agony will finally lose that pain is heaven for her, but its also hell to lose a person you love so much. |

| Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics

This song is NOT about lesbian relationships or lesbian sex. It wouldn't make the song any less powerful if it were, but the fac tis Sarah was dating her bass player and her best friend was dating her drummer. All of them lived together and the drummer (who is now Sarah's husband and father of her child) and Sarah started a relationship. Sarah felt she had hurt her friend. The song is about her feelings and apologies to her. |
